The Spiral Animals #10: Foxes [type 1]
Guidelines here
As mentioned in the title, this post will only cover one specific type of fox as there are multiple ones hailing from different worlds of the spiral. Foxes are just one of many animals in the spiral that have multiple types, and I base each type of each animal based on what world they come from. Today, we’ll be discussing the foxes from Marleybone.
World of Origin: Marleybone, but more specifically, Albion (most likely found in one of Marleybone’s skyways), which is based off of Scotland
Group Name in Game: N/A
Culture in Real Life: Scottish
Approximate Time Period: Given that the known parts of Marleybone are based on Victorian era Great Britain, I’ll put my guess on 19th-20th century C.E. for the foxes.
In-Game Examples:
Bonnie Anne in Pirate101
There are no Marleybonian foxes in Wizard101 (that I could find)
moving it to here because I mentioned it in the comments but think it’s important, but albion is actually a representation of Ireland, from the few decades immediately pre-World War I. 1880′s or 1890′s to try and be more precise, probably? But albion and the foxes are meant as a representation for the Irish independence movement around that time.
Couple of thoughts:
Real-life Anne Bonny who Bonnie Anne was named after/based on was an Irish pirate
Scotland has moved for independence in a variety of ways before, but never as radically and violently as Ireland; Scottish and Irish identities are largely linked and forged through literature and theater; but Ireland more specifically has participated in conflicts for independence (both generally and to the point of 1880/1890; Easter 1914, WW1, and the Irish Civil War would follow until 1921; continued violence would follow until, well, today).
Even though “Albion” is used currently to refer more specifically to Scotland in Gaelic, it was originally used to refer to Ireland and Scotland together
“The Troubles” Molly Anne talks of in Bonnie’s companion quest pre-dates when the actual Troubles occurred, but the Troubles were a real series of events and conflicts in Northern Ireland from 1960-2000. Actually, The Cranberries’s song “Zombie” is about them.
I cannot pin down exactly what inspired Guy Fox, or if that narrative was all original, but it gives me really strong “Station Island” vibes, a poem where the author recounts the myriad ways of death in Ireland because of oppression; there is a specific scene where his cousin who was involved in the fighting comes back as a ghost. Family divides were real.
I could go on, but I think this is probably good!
