TAEKAI NATION HOW WE FEELING
it’s 2am
WHEN | during the officer party WHERE | the officers wardroom WITH | @adinfinita
he wonders, as he stands towards the back of the officer’s wardroom, his fingers wrapped around a glass he has yet to take a drink from, if this is how galileo must have felt when he first craned his neck to better glance at the sun--if he too, suddenly felt himself consumed with a hunger to dig his hands into the flame and discover the mechanism by which it turned, sustained all life upon the earth? did he too suddenly become aware, as jack is now, his gaze fixed upon the other side of the room, where the commander holds court like agamemmnon reincarnate, of himself as a celestial body--doomed to forever turn in synchronization with the sun, to never bring itself close enough to feel the heat from the flame?
did galileo look up at the sky and also feel the urge to make himself in the sun’s image as something equally glorious? equally devastating to behold?
or did he look up at the sky and feel, as jack does now, the warm and familiar, dark and shadowy tendrils of hunger? the threat of something all-consuming clawing its way through the grave dirt of the mind, waiting for the opportunity to draw breath? the commander, dressed in navy and gold, standing in the center of the wardroom like the sun by which other planetary masses draw their marching orders, represents something that jack had hoped he had buried in the sands of the egyptian desert, something he had hoped he’d been cured of the tase for--ambition, in all of it’s golden, sticky-sweet, heady glory.
he concludes that perhaps it’s better for him to look away, in the same way that staring too long at the sun makes the eyes begin to see spots, makes headaches blossom behind the eyes. temptation is more easily avoided when one is not directly presented with it, and besides--he’d been burned last time, in the reaching, hadn’t he? left with a wound that barely managed covering, most days?
he tries to strike up conversation with the ice master, who is the person standing nearest to him, but before he can so much as ask them a question about their area of expertise, he notices the commander withdraw from their circle of admirers, notices him begin to drift closer. when he finally rests a hand on jack’s shoulder, grins affably at him, he feels as though his heart is threatening to break through the scorched and brittle bones that house it.
“sir,” he says in way of greeting, with a dip of his head in deference. “that must have been some story you were telling just then, they still appear to be discussing the particulars, even after you’ve left the conversation.”
fellas is it gay to take your best friend to hike and then surprise him with a picnic and then do stuff like this
