History blog dedicated to all things Marie-Joseph Paul Ives Roch Gilbert du Motier. MARQUIS DE LAFAYETTE The Hero of the Two Worlds - Le Héros des Deux Mondes This blog strives for historical accuracy. That being said, all portrayals of Lafayette are welcome and accepted. Birth: September 6, 1757 Death: May 20, 1834 Feel free to bring any questions or discoveries you have to my attention. I am always interested in anything regarding the American Revolution or French Revolution, but my heart lies with Lafayette. At eight-years-old, I was introduced to the Marquis, and I have been passionate about him ever since. Vive le Marquis. "Humanity has won its battle. Liberty now has a country." {{Want to become a member of a historical society dedicated to the memory of Lafayette? Visit: https://friendsoflafayette.wildapricot.org/ for more information.}}
September 11, 1777. I referred to this print of "Lafayette wounded" and photos of the reenactment of the Battle of Brandywine on Wikimedia Commons. See my process (speedpaint and animation timelapse) on instagram!
Rounding out the celestial trio, Lafayette: The Star! (He gets his own bonus chapter in Coelestia too - Astrum!) The Star is positive, motivated, and typically represents "hope for the future" which I think suits Lafayette. I delve into this in the tags of this ask lol. Bonus versions on instagram (with musical accompaniment)!
I figured this was the aficionado Tumblr to go to! What should I know about our beloved Marquis to write about him accurately? He will be a major character in 5 of the 6 novels in a historical fiction series I'm writing.
Hello! I am on mobile, so I apologize if the formatting is off. There are so many things to know about him! From a historical accuracy standpoint, there are countless books you could reference. My personal suggestion? Read his letters! They can be found online and many are translated into English if French is not a language you are familiar with. It gives you a good perspective of how he processed the world around him. If you get stuck reading the letters and aren’t sure what he’s referring to, a little extra research often provides context. Letters from and about him are a great insight into his characterization.
Most Americans don’t know the good things their fellow Americans are doing overseas because they’re not reporting it on cnn or whatever bullshit news outlet they’re paying attention to. Really good men sacrifice their life and time to help and it makes me sick when people don’t think this is a day to celebrate.
^^^ this. We live in a world where people are not even in reality half the time. So phone faced they don’t even know common knowledge, just worried about taking their next selfie. Where they actually forget it or are so out of touch with reality they dont realize that the only reason they have the freedom they do is because people have laid their lives down for us. I’m all for people standing up for what they want to believe in, but don’t forget to show some grace and be thankful that people gave that to you, because they did. You’re not entitled to it, it was earned FOR you.
Because I am OP, I am stating this here. People can be grateful for sacrifices that came before and be angry at what’s happening now. People can choose to celebrate or choose to abstain. People can recognize the abject misery being created by the United States—for the United States—and subsequently the world, and still hope for a better America. That is the point. The freedom to choose.
Based on this scene from “George Washington” (1984), where Laurens, Lafayette, and Hamilton are watching Washington and Lee argue the night before the battle of Monmouth. Bonus versions + my process on instagram (with musical accompaniment)!

Hello!! I love your blog so much, Lafayette is such an interesting man and I love learning about him. Do you happen to have more information about him as a father? I recall a post saying he and Adrienne would let their kids interact with guests, is there any more info about that?
Hello! I go over Lafayette as a father here. Feel free to search the children's names in my tags for more information!
Can you list the books you have on Lafayette if it's not too much trouble please?
Hello! So...a bit of tragedy.
I am currently studying abroad and as a result, had to sell most of my library or put it in storage. Cue me gross sobbing here.
As a result, I cannot give you a complete list. The most comprehensive look at Lafayette during his initial American adventure is Lafayette In America by Louis Gottschalk. If you have specific things you're looking for, feel free to let me know and I'll add recommendations.
Hey! Do we know what was Lafayette's relationship with Hamilton like?
Hello! I did a bit of a deep-dive here. Feel free to search Alexander Hamilton in my tags. There is plenty of info on the two of them together and how they felt about one another!
For some reason, I have not been receiving notifications when I receive an Ask. I have......so many to catch up on. I'll try to catch up as soon as possible! Thank you for your interest and enthusiasm about Lafayette!
"We go to America, Ségur, Noailles, Lafayette, and we fight. We fight for Washington. We fight for liberty."
"Et pour la gloire."
"Sans oublier l'honneur."
"Et pour tuer les Anglais!"
