“ --- Oh? ”     They're so long past the point of worrying about language in their household the swear doesn't even warrant comment.  Mia's brows raise and a smile crosses briefly over her expression.  Her immediate reaction is to be suspicious  ( how did they get into her locker?  what else could they have hidden in there?  exactly how many roses was a shitload? )  but she's not going to tarnish this for her daughter with with paranoia just yet.  And, truth be told, there was something refreshing and endearing about such a cliche act.  There weren’t enough of those in their lives.

This feels familiar. They’ve had this conversation before, before Dulvey. It’s just a babysitting job. Lots of jobs require travel. I’ll be home before you know it. Ethan never accused her outright of lying nor demanded the truth, but it was there in his eyes -- a doubt, a worry. A plea for her to just talk to him.

Their reunion had been a second chance at honesty and Mia had committed to that. She had poured out the truth to Ethan ( in fragments, at first, as the memories trickled back to her ) and incredibly he had forgiven her. And now they were going to start a family together. Every piece of their future was aligning more beautifully than she could have ever imagined.

But sometimes Ethan caught glimpses of something she tried so hard to keep hidden. Sometimes he could see that moment of hesitation, the fear in her eyes. That one fragment of truth that could shatter those carefully formed pieces was caught in her throat and no matter how hard she tried she couldn’t bring herself to let it out. Ever since she had found out about the pregnancy it had become a more persistent ache, and more obvious to Ethan.

But how could she tell him now? Now, when they were so close to the happy, normal life they had always wanted with each other? What right did she have to rob him of that when for three years it had never been an obstacle? She wasn’t even sure it was true, let alone that it would ever have any bearing on their life. Her pregnancy was going smoothly, all of the tests were coming back perfectly normal. What right did she have to ruin all of this for him?

“ It’s okay, really. ” She smiles, and it’s warm and sincere. “ I’m just thinking about the baby. Apparently I was a pretty difficult childbirth. But this little one… ” Her hand smooths over the swell of her stomach. “ I know there won’t be anything difficult about her. ”

Mia is way more interested in being comfortable than looking fashionable. She takes care of herself and is mindful of her appearance, she'll never be sloppy or disheveled. But at the end of the day she chooses clothes that she can move and be comfortable in and rarely does anything fancy with her day to day appearance.

Piggybacking off of this headcanon to something vaguely related, I headcanon that their house in Romania is way colder than she's used to and she hates being cold. On an average night, sitting inside and reading a story to her child, she's wearing at least 3 layers on her torso and socks and house slippers. That is a woman bundled up because she's cold and doesn't want to be. Which makes sense considering the Winters lived in Texas and LA before their relocation but still. Mia will always be dressed to be comfortable and warm.

Mia definitely thinks she’s a bit more of a wild child than she really is.  She knows how to kick back and have fun and she’s more than capable of bending the rules when it suits her but at the end of the day she really isn’t all that rebellious.  She would never go against something just for the sake of going against it,  but she finds it very easy to ignore rules and conventions she doesn’t personally agree with.  On the whole she prefers to have a system or plan to things rather than winging it or forging her own path.

No,  but I imagine she used to be when she was younger.  It’s something she’s gotten much better at (probably being with Ethan helped with that tbh since he’s never afraid to speak his mind) but now she’s a lot better at standing up for herself.  One important thing to her is being fully informed.  She’ll never agree with something just because she’s told to.  She always wants to understand every part of a situation and feel comfortable in her knowledge of the circumstance before she makes her own decision.

Mia has a good sense of humor!  She can take a joke and never takes things too seriously.  She’s definitely not a prankster and isn’t ever known as being the funniest person in the room but she’s got a sharp wit which makes it easy for her to crack wise or keep up with banter.  She also likes using humor to cheer people up or lighten a mood.  In terms of what makes her laugh she appreciates a good pun and videos of animals doing ridiculous things,  or literally any joke that @humanityshope​ tells her.

     Footsteps are quiet as she approaches her, her smile never faded, eyes still watery from laughter. Curiosity obvious in her expressions while she peeks over the backpack to see its insides. “ If you can’t make room I’m sure I have some. ” She also has few things they could discard themselves of, things she’d gotten the girl more wanted than really needed. 

     “ Dude I’m so fucking hungry. ” Last part of the sentence said dramatically, voice much deeper than it really is as she mimics Mia’s position, going through her own backpack now humming an unknown melody she’d heard somewhere sometime. “ You just want me to write a book only so I’ll mention you in my memoir, isn’t that right ? ” The girl pauses the shuffling of her backpack to tilt her head at Mia, raising an eyebrow with a smile on her face. She appreciated the support, the question before that too, but unfortunately they needed the bandages more than a journal. They can find one some other time. 

“ Mhm. ”     The hum of affirmation is accompanied by a nod,  Mia’s expression half-amused.     “ That’s right.  Make sure you include all of my best qualities,  like how I always laugh at your jokes and my unparalleled generosity. ”     With that Mia grabs a granola bar from her bag and passes it to Ellie.     “ See?  But that’ll have to hold you over until we get back.  Think you can make it? ”

She starts to pack everything up,  taking care to keep the antiseptic bottle cushioned and settling for tucking the bandages into an outside packet.  The box holding the bandaids is discarded and they’re able to be arranged loose in the backpack,  which seems to solve every problem Mia had with space.

“ Alright,  last call.  If there’s anything you want to check out while we’re here this is the time to do it. ”     Mia stands and hefts the packpack onto her shoulders.  She checks the weight balance,  having also grabbed a few books of her own.  All things considered it was shaping up to be a pretty good day out.

           Rose   sighs.   “I’m   just   scared   that   something   will   happen   that   I   won’t   be   able   to   come   back   from.   that’s   my   biggest   fear.”   she   takes   in   a   breath,   wiping   her   eyes.   “I’m   afraid   that   I’ll   turn   into   a   monster   and   that   I   won’t   be   able   to   come   home   to   you   again.   I   can’t   get   that   fear   out   of   my   head.   I   can’t   get   the   fear   that   someone   would   do   something   to   me   because   of   your   past   out   of   my   head.   that   thought   makes   me   panic   every   single   time   I   go   in   there.   they   say   that   they   won’t   but   I   can’t   know   that   for   sure.   unless   it’s   doctor   chambers,   I   trust   her   more   than   any   of   them.”   she   finally   sniffles.   “can   you   ask   if   we   can   have   doctor   chambers   do   them   from   now   on?   I   feel   safer   with   her.”

Mia had never,  and would never,  compare her daughter to Eveline.  But she had always wondered how different things could have been if that little girl had a mother who loved her the way Mia so fiercely loved Rose.  Mia takes a deep breath again,  and nods.     “ Of course,  Rose.  And I’m sure we can stop the tests for a bit.  You deserve a break.  I’ll … I’ll talk to the doctors about how often you’re going,  and see about getting Doctor Chambers put in charge of things. ”

She reaches an arm out to draw Rose closer,  hoping to offer some comfort in her embrace.     “ I’m so sorry,  sweetie.  You know anyone who wants to get to you is going to have to get through me first,  right? ”     Mia smiles,  but the comment is hardly in jest.     “ In fact,  I’ll start sticking around instead of dropping you off.  Right outside room,  every step of the way.  Fuck protocol,  right? ”     She tried,  very hard,  not to swear in front of Rose typically.  This seemed like an appropriate exception.

i like to hc that rose’s name is a nod to the song “ scarborough fair ” ( featuring the line “ parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme ” ) bc if ethan can like jazz then mia can like 60s american folk rock.  also the song itself has some significance to mia/ethan since it’s both a song about completing impossible tasks to prove your love for someone and a song about the violence of war,  and there is plenty of violence and impossible tasks for love in their story lmao.

ALSO also as an edit/aside it would make a great lullaby to sing to a tiny baby
