Probably my Odyssey feelings are so positive because a few days earlier I'd seen Interstellar for the first time. Hey you're one of the only other classicists I know online have you seen Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey (2026) and did you like it? I thought it was fairly good all things considered

omg post-cinema I went back for your post about it and I agree. Big laughed in the screening at the first “our age of bronze is collapsing” and then, they did it a second time 

I did like it! And had fun (high praise considering 3 hours cinema city anti-fat seating)

Highlights: cyclops bit; the way it was all very concerned with xenia and food*, the logistics, the number of men; the palace on Ithaka being way the fuck up a hill; Telemachus a good role all round

I DISLIKED: more of a disinterest in women than in the source materials?? A change which sucks imo is killing the women in Troy, so we don’t have to deal with their thoughts or experiences. The bronze age stuff was Goofy**. I think an exploration of how a more naturalistic character would experience the horrors of war vs the Homeric drive for glory would be interesting, but I don’t think Nolan tried that.

Leaves me wanting to check out Andrei Rublev! And I’m going to read the whole Odyssey instead of just GCSE selections of book 9 lmaoo (I read two whole introductions in advance of the film)

King Alfred the Great’s lost remains 'found under car park', TV show researchers say

The long-lost remains of King Alfred the Great have been found buried under a car park, investigators claim.

Alfred died in 899, and his bones were repeatedly moved. He was buried in Winchester Cathedral until 1110, when his remains were moved to Winchester's Hyde Abbey, where they were interred before the high altar between the bodies of his wife and son. The abbey was demolished after the dissolution of the monasteries in 1539, and the place was left in ruins. In 1866, during construction of a workhouse on the site, the English antiquarian John Mellor excavated the area, found what he thought were Alfred's bones and had them reburied at nearby St. Bartholemew’s Church. But in 2013, when archaeologists exhumed and carbon-dated the bones from St. Bartholomew’s churchyard, they proved to date from over 200 years after Alfred’s death - sparking Graham's interest and search. He said: "Whoever’s bones they were, they weren’t Alfred’s. So, I decided to discover what happened to them. "The quest has taken me 13 years.”
