The Grand Optimist

People refer to me as Jake. I figure the title works well enough. I'll keep it. I'm a handy man, a jack of all trades when it comes to construction. I like building things from the ground up, in the hopes that the effort pays off. I've also been known for having something of a green thumb. More of a hobby than anything, really. Eli: [chuckles] Fair enough. Now I have two things to look forward to. [smiles to himself, falling silent] Can you stay on the line so we can technically fall asleep together?

Jake: Mhmm, I'd like that. [pulls his blanket up over him, getting comfortable and keeping the phone against his ear] I love you, Eli. Sweet dreams.

Call || Eli

Eli: I was hoping that'd be the case. I'm officially assigning you the mission of tracking those photos down. [sucks his teeth] Dammit. I had plans to make copies and post them all over the city. Ah well.

Jake: [laughs softly] Knew it. You'll just have to keep these ones between us. But I don't mind showing you otherwise.

Call || Eli

Eli: I don't doubt that for a second. You and the outdoors go hand in hand. [chuckles] Just when I thought you couldn't get any more wholesome, my god. I hope there are pictures...

Jake: It's funny that you mention pictures, since I'm pretty sure I could find some while I'm here with my dad. As long as they don't see the light of day otherwise.

Eli: [groans] Okay, okay. I'll try to be patient. [laughs, his shoulders shaking] God, of /course/ you were a boy scout. You must've been so cute in your uniform as a kid.

Jake: I was one of the best ones there. Had all the badges and did every single task. [smiles proudly] I was pretty cute, not gonna lie.

Eli: [smiles, having a feeling Jake's more than likely blushing on the other end] No problem, my love. [sighs] This is why you need to hurry home. I miss your lips.

Jake: I'll be back before you know it, okay? And then you'll get all the kisses you want. Scout's honor. Which I can say since I was once a boy scout.

Eli: [rolls his eyes] You're even more stubborn than me-- and that's saying something. You may lead a relatively simple life but you've got layers, Martin. [smiles] Neither can I. In the meantime, I'll continue smothering you in hugs and kisses.

Jake: [turns a light shade of red, flattered by his words] Well, thank you. Really. I appreciate it, sweetheart. [laughs] Good, I definitely like the sound of that.

Call || Eli

Eli: [shakes his head] I'm not being gracious enough, actually. There's so much that could be said about you. I haven't even begun to scratch the surface. [smiles] I think about it too. Whenever we get married, we'll be able to ditch our imaginations and truly experience the real thing.

Jake: [grins playfully] Then that's your need to elaborate on even the most mundane of things talking, since I'm pretty simple on the whole. But I love that you think otherwise. [nods] I can't wait for it.

Eli: [smiles] I know you are but as far as this goes, you don't have a single thing to worry about. You /are/ the best of the best. No one could ever make me feel the way you do. [lifts a brow] You do? [chuckles] I'm yet to master the art of having a filter, sorry. [smiles warmly] We're a perfect match.

Jake: [rolls his eyes] I think you're being a little too gracious with the compliments, mister. [laughs and covers his face with his free hand, feeling bashful] Yeah, I do. A /ton/ and it's enough to drive a man crazy, honestly.

Eli: It's the most amazing feeling. Just knowing that you trust me that much...nothing beats that. [shakes his head] J, no. One thing you could never be is a disappointment. From the moment we took our relationship into the physical sense, it was perfect. It won't be any different when we take that last step. I'm a hundred and ten percent sure about that. Most guys are jerks who only think with their cocks. [laughs] But seriously, there's so much more to a relationship than sex. Above all else, what I love most about us is our connection.

Jake: Okay. [sighs, feeling relieved even though he knows Eli would never think ill of him] I'm a worry wart sometimes, you know that. I'm just so crazy about you, and you're the best and you /deserve/ the best, so I want to be that for you. I think us doing that together...so much. Almost all the time, it's unreal. [rolls his eyes at his language] So blunt. [laughs as well] I do too.

Eli: [smiles at the compliment] Maybe I'll create a hit so big the whole world will love it. [laughs softly. gets quiet for a moment] I already know it's going to be amazing because it's you....it's us. When we get together, it's magic-- as cheesy as that might be to say.

Jake: It's not cheesy at all. I can't explain what it's like when we get to have those moments. I just really don't want to disappoint or be a letdown after making you wait so long. Most guys wouldn't be patient like you.

Call || Eli

Eli: I'm sure it'll be the most beautiful on the block. Our neighbors are going to be so damn jealous. [laughs] That won't be any different from how it is now. I love getting updates from you throughout the day. [bites on his lip] That's the plan, for sure.

Jake: And everything you create in your study is going to be a hit, just like with everything else you make. [breaths hitch slightly, practically lightheaded from even the subtle conversation] I'll make sure all the waiting was worth it.

Eli: It's going to be perfect. Can you imagine whenever we get our own house? You could have space for a garden and I could have a study. We'd have breakfast and dinner together every night. We'd trade stories from work and I'm sure text each other throughout the day. And then we'd be in bed together, cuddling, kissing...other things. [laughs] I'm excited for everything that's going to come our way.

Jake: I want a garden so badly, that would be perfect. [smiles] I'd be texting you during every single break I get, seriously. [blushes fiercely at the last part of his sentence, feeling his stomach flip] A lot of those "other things" after we get married, definitely.

Call || Eli

Eli: [laughs heartily] Well, I can be glad for that then. As long as you're a fan of it, I won't need to worry. [closes his eyes, a wide smile spreading across his face] That's the only reason I haven't just jumped in and done it either. We're still in school and all that but once we're truly on our own, things are going to change and get even better for us. [sighs softly] That was beautiful. I only want you, for the rest of my life.

Jake: I just want to live with you and be nauseatingly in love and domestic. That's literally my ideal life. It's so nice to see it as clearly as I know we both do. [sighs softly] You'll get just that, I promise.

[martinjakey]

Call || Eli

Eli: Five and a half, thank you very much. [laughs] I was a total nightmare but of course my parents were all for it. Youthful rebellion and all that. [shakes his head] Good. I'd marry you today if I could. I don't want to spare a moment in having that future with you.

Jake: Mhmm, sure. [shakes his head] Youthful is fine except you didn't ever grow out of it. Good thing it makes you extremely adorable. [expression grows soft] I'd marry you this second if we could, seriously. I'm only waiting until it's a more reasonable move to make but otherwise, there's nothing stopping me. I know what I want, who I want.

[martinjakey]

Call || Eli

Eli: I wish I could slug you in the arm right now. [chuckles] Don't be so sure about that. I may not have long legs like you but I'm sure I could do some real damage so play your cards very carefully, Jacob. [groans] Don't you dare. If you have the ring ready to go, you have to propose because I'm going to spend the next few years dying for that day to come, sir.

Jake: I'm sure you do. [chuckles] You seriously turn into such a brat sometimes. Like, full-fledged five year old mode. Toddler Eli must have been a riot. He clearly didn't do much maturing. [grins and sighs dramatically, as if it pains him to relent] Fine, fine. Only because I know you're so excited.

Call || Eli

Eli: [pouts] I am not "cute", Martin. I've never been.../that/. [rolls his eyes and laughs] You asshole. I'd probably kick you one of those days. And with my luck, it'd be the day you're popping the question for real.

Jake: Except for the fact that you really, really are. And it's something you can't control. [snorts] And I'd hardly feel it. [laughs loudly] Dude, right? And I'd just shake my head at you, and shove the ring box back in my pocket. Tsk, tsk, Elijah. Take this as a cautionary tale.

Eli: [laughs giddily] It's going to be the greatest day of our lives, hands down. I can't wait for it, I really can't. [rolls his eyes] You're going to hang this over my head, crap.

Jake: You're the cutest, I can't handle it. [nods smugly] Oh yeah, I definitely am. I'll pull a Jim every single day, bending down and tying my shoe but making you think I'm about to pop the question, thinking of every way I can to drive you nuts with it.
