No quiero ver a nadie
Frozen in place, Glimmer watched her daughter’s frame grow smaller and smaller, as if someone were taking her away. Leading her astray. But they weren't. Amethyst was the one who refused to listen. This was her doing. Glimmer couldn’t breathe, sucking in the air in shaky gasps, her mind whirring with frustration and grief. And yet, around the edges, self-disgust, the condescending mind that told her it wasn't the toddler's fault. It was her own. Even her own kid didn’t want to be with her.
Agonising minutes passed, Glimmer trapped in a state of panic and helplessness, eyes unmoving from where her daughter had disappeared from view, as if she’d suddenly reappear. But of course she wouldn’t. Why would she? Time slowed, Glim’s vision blurring. Hands pulled at her hair, fingernails digging into her legs, the only way she could emote her deep discomfort. She couldn’t even scream for attention, throat closed up, mouth dry. An eternity seemed to pass before she saw a figure entering the skyline, coming into view. Two figures. Instantly, Glimmer breathed, air filling her lungs, letting out the sob that had been crushing her. Marvel was there. Their hero.
Able to move now, her knees gave out, collapsing back onto the park bench as she gasped for breath. Seeing Marvel had filled her with relief. If he was there, everything with Amethyst would be okay. She was no longer alone with the responsibility. Once she’d seen his expression, however, that relief was instantly swallowed up by shame. He was angry. Of course he was angry, because once again, she’d failed at being a parent, and Marvel had to pick up the slack. Unable to answer his question, or rather, not wanting to, she shook her head, looking down, tears escaping. Eyeing their daughter beside him, she considered reaching out, to check if she was okay, but didn’t. The fear of her daughter screaming like she had before halted her in place. For a moment, resentment again filled her gaze.
With no answer, Marvel changed tack, tone shifting, a hand finding Glimmer’s chin. Almost immediately, her resistance faltered, finally meeting his gaze, the anger gone from her eyes. She was terrified to voice her truth, but felt she had no choice now, not when she’d fucked up like this. “She hates me,” she whispered, almost unable to be heard, also afraid that her daughter might even overhear and confirm it. She didn’t want it to be true, but she believed it was, and for Marvel’s sake, it broke her heart. His love and care for their daughter was effortless — he was perfect at it, as was his relationship with her. But Glimmer struggled with it everyday, especially over the last few months, and yet had almost nothing to show for her efforts. “I don’t know what to do about it. Nothing works. It’s - all my fault.”
Marvel couldn’t deny the guilt that pressed at him as he unintentionally furthered Glimmer’s upset. Despite her actions, he hated the idea of ever seeing her cry, especially due to his own words. But he needed to communicate the importance of Amethyst’s safety, of how vital it was to never let her go, especially considering the world they lived in. He didn’t want to spend his time at work consistently worrying about both of them, so however this has occurred, it need to be resolved. And fast. For all of their sakes.
Marvel sat down on the bench beside her, and placed Amethyst the other side of him, pulling his tablet from his pocket and handing it to his daughter. Usually, he wasn’t so dismissive, but he needed Amethyst to keep herself occupied for a few minutes whilst he talked to Glimmer. Satisfied with a game she found, she kept quiet and seated, giving them the space they needed to talk freely. Even if Amethyst wouldn’t understand the full context of the conversation, it wasn’t one he wanted her to overhear or be a part of. “What?” Was all he managed in response at first, struck by confusion and hurt. Clearly, Alexandria had distracted him so much he’d missed the signs. The lead up. He hadn’t been paying enough attention. Glimmer would’ve had to have been dealing with these emotions for quite some time to release them so publicly, and all at once. “Of course she doesn’t hate you. Why would you think that?” His tone wasn’t accusatory, it stayed gentle, wishing for nothing more than to understand.
It was no secret that parenting came more naturally to Marvel, but being an older sibling came with experience that correlated well with raising a child. Of course he’d found the transition easier. Clearly, though, he needed to work on being a better partner alongside that. “Look, Glim. None of this is your fault, alright? She’s a kid. A kid that’s growing up, finding her voice. They get to this age, and they start challenging you, seeing how far they can push you. I’m not sure what happened today, but that’s what this looks like.” He sighed, taking her hands in his own. “She loves you. I promise you. You’re her mother, how could she not?”
“… But you can’t let her control you. We’re the parents. She doesn’t listen? Take away her toys. She’ll argue and she’ll have a tantrum but you can’t let it get the better of you. You need to stand your ground, help her learn respect. She doesn’t understand it yet, she’s too young. But she will. So long as we teach her the right way. You can’t take it personally. Her behaviour doesn’t mean she hates you, or doesn’t want you around her. In fact, it’s probably the opposite. She knows you’ll still be there, that’s the one thing she’s sure of. We’ve moved countless times, but we’re her constant. With all of these new emotions forming, all of these changes, she’s probably confused; it won’t be long before she’s testing me too. ‘You get that?”
