It was meant to be a time for celebration. The war was over, and he had been a big contributor in helping the winning side. Yet why did this feel like the worst day of his life? Severus brushed his fingers over your bandaged forehead, a bit of blood staining them. Crammed together on a small hospital bed, you were passed out and lying on top of him. He didn’t wish to let you go - even when Poppy insisted you needed your rest- as he wanted to make sure you were alright. To make sure the moment you woke up, he would be there by your side.
The only thing known of your predicament so far was how you were found and the external injuries to your body. Flitwick was the one who found you, lying next to a pile of rubble just a few steps away from the castle. When he brought you to the hospital wing, Madam Pomfrey tended to the cuts and broken bones at once. Whatever had harmed you, had done a bang-up job. Severus was rushing through the castle calling out your name when he caught wind of someone saying you were in the hospital wing. Seeing you so broken nearly killed him. His only saving grace was being assured you would make a full recovery in due time.
It had been hours now since he climbed into the bed. Each hour that you remained asleep filled him with dread. Everyone else had woken up but you, and the only think keeping him from pacing around the room anxiously was the idea of not being able to hold you.
He kept kicking himself for not being at your side throughout the battle. Though he knew it was for the best, if anyone had the slightest clue how much you meant to him, it would have been used not only against him but you as well. Should anyone threaten your life in his presence or use you as leverage, he would have folded. Which is why you made the suggestion to fight separately. Something he was reluctant to agree to, and now regretted wholeheartedly.
You began to stir in your sleep, pulling Severus out from his thoughts. He ran his hands along your back soothingly and whispered I love yous into your ear, pressing light kisses to your forehead. Instead of settling back into his arms and falling asleep as you had done the last several times, your eyes slowly fluttered open. Severus couldn’t stop the smile from spreading across his face as your pupils focused on your surroundings.
“I’m so glad you’re awake my love. Are you alright?”
Everything felt fuzzy. A throbbing headache combined with the painful tingle from the scrapes all over your arms and legs. Whatever you were laying on was firm and very warm. Your eyes roamed over the room. You knew this room, the hospital wing. But why were you here?
“Y/N?”
Your head snapped in the direction of the voice. Someone had called your name. Looking up you met cool dark eyes, staring at you with concern. “Who are you?”. Your confusion quickly turned into concern. Who was this man and why were you laying on him? You struggled to scoot away from him. His touch was all over your body and you wanted him off you and quick.
“Very funny darling, but seriously are you alright?” He leaned down to kiss you, but you shot a hand up to block him. What was happening?
Severus’ face fell and his hand dropped from your back. “Poppy. POPPY.” He shouted. “She’s awake. POPPY.”
A door flew open, and an older woman rushed out, awkwardly tying a robe around her waist as she stumbled over to the bed. You recognized this woman.
“Merlin’s beard Severus. It’s four in the morning.” She chided before turned to face you with a softer expression she spoke, “Hello dear. Are you feeling alright?”
“No.” Severus interjected. “She is acting as if she doesn’t know who I am.”
“I don’t. Tell him to get off me please.” Your nails had dug into his sides in an attempt to get him off the small bed, but he had ignored it. Poppy’s eyes jumped back and forth between you and Severus. “You don’t recognize him? Not at all?”
When you shook your head, you could hear Severus’ breath hitch. A lot of emotions were running through your mind. Confusion being the most prevalent. Poppy stared at you for a moment before turning to Severus. “Off the bed Severus. Now.”
“What? Absolutely not.” He pulled you closer to him and panic started to rise in your chest. Why was this stranger manhandling you? And why wasn’t the woman in front of you more alarmed by his behavior. It started to piss you off.
“Severus I need to get a look at her, and I can’t do that with you on the bed and all over her. Off now.” She yanked off the blanket that had been draped over your bodies which made you shudder. Without the covers, you could see the gauze wrapped all over your legs and thighs. The sources of the painful prickles.
The man beneath you finally removed his touch from you and got to his feet. The bed felt a lot colder now but ten times more spacious. Poppy stepped in front of Severus, blocking him from your view. “Okay dear, I’m going to ask you a few questions. I want you to answer them as best as you can, sound good?” You nodded your head and she smiled briefly.
“What is your name?”
“Y/N L/N” You answered without thought. Why wouldn’t you remember your name? She didn't seem pleased by your answer.
“Do you know where you are right now?”
“Yes. This is the Hogwarts infirmary.”
“Very good.” She smiled and turned back to glance at Severus whose expression you could not see. “What is the last thing you remember?”
Your eyebrows furrowed in thought as you processed the question. Your mind was quite foggy, but there was something you remembered. “Dumbledore asked me to teach at Hogwarts. I was in his office discussing the position this morning. I’m not sure how I ended up in the hospital wing though.”
Although you could not see him, you could hear him. He had taken in a sharp breath and so had Poppy. “A-And do you know who this is?” She stepped aside and let you stare at the tall imposing figure behind her. You racked your brain, trying to think if you had ever come across him before. His face looked pained, and he looked into your eyes with such an intense desire that it made you a bit uncomfortable.
“No, I’m sorry. Should I?”
Severus let out the breath he had been holding in. He plopped down onto the bed behind him-hunched over, resting his elbows on his thighs- a lone tear trailing down his cheek.
“That is Severus Snape. He’s your husband. My dear you’ve been married to him for three years and teaching at Hogwarts for five now.”
