MARVS & FRIENDS

Minsan ako si Marvs. Para sa iba ako si Marvina. at minsan, ako si Marben. Tinatawag din nila akong chihuahua. Saka, Marvin bulag.

Pero madalas ako si Marvin.

Grabe! Sobrang dami kong kaibigan kung kaya't sobrang dami kong palayaw. Mula sa umaga, sa hapon hanggang gabi iba't ibang "Marvin" ang naririnig ko na tila ba nag-iibang anyo ang aking pisikal na katauhan, pero syempre hinding-hindi ang aking pagkatao. Siguro kaya napakarami kong kaibigan kasi may mga kakaiba sa aking pagkatao at mga ugali. (Hindi ko rin sure e HAHA)

Hanggang sa kasalukuyan, nakakasama at nakakasalamuha ko pa rin sila. Mapa-ordinaryong araw man o may okasyon.

Sa puntong ito ng aking buhay, ako ay tunay at lubos na nagpapasalamat sa Panginoon na nagbigay at nagpadala ng mga tila anghel ang panloob katauhan at binabalot ng kung anumang ang panlabas upang ako ay samahan, damayan, tawanan, dautin, asarin at awayin. Sa araw-araw ba naman na sila ang aking nakakasama, nakakachikahan, nakakatawanan at nakakabangayan, tuluyan na silang naging at nagiging bahagi ng mahaba, ma-drama at mala-epikong kwento ng aking buhay.

At ako na ang nagsasabi, hindi sapat ang isang nobelang may isandaang kabanata upang ikwento ang lahat ng aking karanasan at ala-ala kasama ang aking mga matatalik na kaibigan.

CLAIRVOYANCE

It was 9 p.m... Looking into his room, you would see him lazily lying in his bed. In his thoughts, he kept wishing that he could skip his years as a student and fast forward in time where everything gets easy. He was half-awake, he got his phone, opened it to check notifications, turned it off, looked in it as if it is a mirror and stare at his face. Then again, he threw his face into his pillows. He made a noise out of anxiousness.

"I'm ready!" he said to himself as he falls asleep trying to forget all his worries.

He woke up out of his bed before the sun rises on a Monday morning. He was preparing everything for it was the first day of his college journey. He took a bath, brushed his teeth, organized school pieces of stuff, and ate his tuna omelet breakfast his mother bought from a convenience store. Everything was ready and well-prepared but one thing was not - his mindset. His mind was full of what-ifs. He was thoroughly anxious and scared of many things. He pushed himself out of those what-ifs amidst being confused as to why he couldn’t look forward to the positive regards of going to a university and possibly having a new life. He was about to go but after a minute, he remembered that he forgot something – his glasses. He went straight to his bedroom, found his glasses, and put them carefully onto the bridge of his nose.

Suddenly, he had a perfect vision. He was inside the university. He saw the beautiful view of the university’s facade facing the nature-inspired grasslandia, the passionate people in their inspired all-white dresses, the hardships and struggles of these people, the trees that stood with these people, and witnessed their success. He saw the process of the university in molding their inspired intellectuals to become innovative educators. His leg trembled as he walked to the male restroom. He stared at his face. Unending thoughts were spinning in his mind. “Who am I seeing in this mirror? It can’t be me. Am I passionate about being at this university and in this profession? Am I ready? I can't do this. Is this a dream?” 

Then he touched his face again. Now, he was aware. He was not who he was last night. He believed that he was a new person. He went out of the restroom, completely disoriented.

At that moment, his world has changed. He tried to remember what happened last night. "What happened to me? What kept me holding?" He kept asking himself. “What caused this, how is this even possible? He kept repeating to himself. “This is impossible!”

As he stared at himself, it was still his white-polo uniform. It was still his favorite gray bag, and the wallpaper of his phone was the same. He used to have an undergraduate ID with the university lanyard. But at the moment he was wearing an official professional teacher’s ID.

Unexpectedly, an email from the university portal was sent. He checked and read the email.

“Kailangan mo ba ng makakausap?...May handang makinig sayo...The first Guidance Learning session of the university is here to help you!!!”

“How heavy is that glass of water you are holding?”

“The absolute weight of that glass is irrelevant. It all depends on how long you hold it.  If you hold it for a minute or two, it’s fairly light.  If you hold it for an hour straight, its weight might make your arm ache.  If you hold it for a day straight, your arm will likely cramp up and feel completely numb and paralyzed, forcing you to drop the glass to the floor. In each case, the absolute weight of the glass doesn’t change, but the longer you hold it, the heavier it feels to you.”

“Your worries, frustrations, disappointments, and stressful thoughts are very much like this glass of water.  Think about them for a little while and nothing drastic happens. Think about them a bit longer and you begin to feel noticeable pain.  Think about them all day long, and you will feel completely numb and paralyzed, incapable of doing anything else until you drop them.”

"What’s happening to me?” he asked himself. After minute, the world became black. Everything around him was black. He screamed. His heart was pounding. Then he slowly opened his eyes, grabbed his face and went towards the mirror and saw, he was a determined young student again.

SMALL IS GREAT.

“Great things almost always start small.” – Joel Gascoigne

“Greatness from small beginnings.” – Sir Francis Drake

“Big things have small beginnings.” – T. E. Lawrence

Those phrases above relate the same thoughts about greatness and small beginnings although they may have different justifications. Honestly, when I first heard the phrase “Small is Great” I was able to relate it with “Small but terrible.”, which I think was one of the compliment cliché phrases that has been overused but does not loses its meaning denotatively and connotatively. Also, I came up with a different interpretation of this phrase.

“Small is Great.”

Greatness does not come with sizes. It does not matter whether a person is physically tall, short, big or small. It does not matter whether he is wealthy or in power. It can be found in his character and goodness. It is from within. It can be determined and measured by simple and small actions that can influence and impact others. According to Coretta Scott King, greatness is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of people. For instance, just because you are a single person among 104 million Filipinos, it does not mean you cannot make an enormous impact. Every Filipino can make a difference in influencing one person at a time and by the level of his or her ability to treat other people, especially those who are of low status than him is the simplest way to determine a person’s greatness. In short, a person's care for others is the measure of his or her greatness.
