i love you Into The Woods 1991 recording

No More, No One is Alone, and Children Will Listen is an absolute brutal back to back run of songs. Stephen was trying to kill me personally with that one. I have a hard time listening to No One is Alone without shedding a tear. Teenage me needed that song so badly.

The way Chip Zien and Kim Crosby deliver “witches can be right, giants can be good, you decide what’s right, you decide good” sends a shiver down my spine.

Everything about the last 15ish minutes of this show is so important to me. The Baker being able to have a reckoning with the father that abandoned him and left him only with beans and a curse. The way he is able to come to a semblance of peace and move forward to try and be a better father to his son. The care Cinderella and The Baker show to their young companions who are scared and mourning. The way Jack and Red chime in at the end of No One is Alone, showing that children do listen (and learn). The Baker’s Wife appearing to comfort The Baker and give him a final piece of advice is so dear to me. It’s just all so beautiful. All of their lives are forever changed by the events of the story. They’ve lost so much and now they have to find a way to come to peace with the results of their wishing. And despite it all, the show ends on a hopeful note for them and us. You are allowed to wish. You are allowed to hope. You can dream. You just can’t lose sight of what you have and you have to be prepared for the journey.

Yeah they've been in my brain for a while ngl 😶

It’s opening night for our production of HSM today and I’m also working on a spinoff show pilot screenplay for a currently unnamed show about Skater Dude #1 from the original film (the cello dude) and also had a really rough and potentially quite poor idea for a Ryan and Kelsi (no they’re not a couple, they’re just BFFs who haven’t seen each other since Julliard, they’re both gay as hell) spinoff that I could improve and start working on at some point.

Actually, I think the reason it was poor was because originally I thought it was going to be a film but now I see it could probably work as a TV show.

Just felt I had to tell someone.

Personal notes

-The Narrator and the Mysterious man being played by different actors was not something I thought of before and I'm kinda glad Sondheim and Lapine changed that. No reason why tho.

-the father, stepmother, and steward not being with Florinda and Lucinda Oh my stars.

-The Giantess looks genuinely horrifying

-"What the eye doesn't see, the heart doesn't suffer" AAAAAA BAKER'S WIFE PLEASEEEEEE

-Mr. Baker why is Little Red taller than you

-Little Red telling directly to Cinderella "I think he's asking you to go back with him" because she's aware that both Cinderella and Baker don't understand shit about romance 😭

-CINDERELLA AND BAKER KISS AAAAA I LOVE THEM SO (sorry folks I just AAAAA I love them so much) though I enjoy them, I feel like they would take five years to get together. Slowass burn

-Children Will Listen is not the finale song but I believe it was mixed back in act 1 with Second Midnight, but it was later cut (obv. I'll post the original second midnight soon) Instead it's a little It Takes Two reprise

-Jack's "Excuse me" is so sassy I love him (stereotypes are harmful but FUCKIN LOOK AT HIM)

-I ADORE how one of the Witch's beans grew into a stalk at the end with the Mysterious Man pointing it out and the main four running to it and pulling it out the ground before it grew any farther ehehe

-The rest of the characters saying "I wish" instead of Cinderella to show that they no longer can wish because they're all dead AAAA

Did you know Into the Woods was basically a bet between Lapine and Sondheim

Thinking about the parallels between the Witch and Little Red.

How they both got to see the outside world before they can process anything else. How they both mention that nice is different from Good. That the Witch likely sees herself in Little Red.

Pointing at her with "broke a little vow" which they both did. When the Witch asks Little Red "when was she so squeamish" she probably saw herself in the girl.

The fact they were both prepared to be mothers in different senses because of their own mother's.(The Witch in spite while Little Red is in honor.)

Extended Second Midnight/Children Will Listen cut song

AAAAAAAAA I FUCKIN LOVE THIS VERSION I WISH THEY DIDN'T CUT IT

but I get why they had to cut it as it would be weird if the characters learnt the lesson in the middle of act 1. But still.

Reasons why I adore this version is that we get more insight on the parents and the children's perspective on each other as roles. Also that they acknowledge they ALL HAVE FATHER ISSUES THANK YOU

The Baker having doubts of being a father and his Wife reminding him this is what they want. And at the ending where she turns to the kids to show no matter how stubborn they can be, she wishes for a child and her husband turning to the parents to show that all he wanted was for at least someone there.
