Resources and Learning Guides
Over the past ten years, MaryCares fundraisers have raised over $54,000 for organizations that Mary McDonnell has supported. The vast majority of that total has gone to Sinte Gleska University, who we have worked exclusively with since 2013.
We are tremendously proud of the connections that we’ve fostered, the financial help we’ve been able to give, and the awareness that we have tried to spread. In keeping with their mission statement to “[Strengthen] our Foundation for The People to Go Forward in the Lakota Way of Life”, we feel it is important for those who are supporting the university and working towards ensuring a better future for the students, faculty, and all of those impacted have a basic understanding of the Lakota Way of Life.
On this page, you can find links to websites, articles, videos, social media accounts, and other resources to help you gain a better understanding of not only SGU but also the history of the Lakota people, the traditions and values they espouse, the challenges they continue to face, and the remarkable resilience they have shown.

***Please note that while we at Mary Cares have explored all of these websites at least peripherally, we cannot vouch for the accuracy of all of the content nor the people behind the various organizations, nor all of the videos or books that have been recommended. To quote from One Spirit’s website, “It is also important to understand that the information below may not reflect the experience of every Lakota individual. Life for the Lakota people is impacted by a complex tribal history that requires more study than any one resource can provide.” We are not Lakota, only individuals trying to learn. We hope that this page can give you a place to start. If anything seems inaccurate or problematic in any way, please contact us. If you know of a resource that would be a good addition to this page, please contact us as well!
