Usually I don’t care about hanging out with edgy atheists so long as they don’t call me an idiot or something but I hate it when I’m learning something cool or teaching someone something cool about a world religion or mythology and I just get a “well isn’t that idiotic lol” from some of them. Like sorry I most likely don’t believe in this thing either but I’m trying to experiencing childlike wonder learning about other cultures here.
many people would be happier and feel less broken if we de-centered romantic relationships but idk if queer people are ready for this discussion. simply because if you are traumatized and soft conversion therapy’d out of expressing romantic desire, the idea that romance is not important is traumatic. and then there’s the pervasive family of origin trauma. if your partner fulfills the ache of unconditional love that you never felt growing up, you understandably will want to prioritize that relationship. plus there’s the pervasive sexual shame.
which means that people who are aro and ace kind of have to navigate a soup of other people’s trauma that we trigger by existing, and definitely trigger by taking up space and CERTAINLY trigger by offering observations like this one.
this post has apparently resonated with a lot of people. i have been checking the comments & tags and a lot of people have shared this experience with me. i’m so glad you saw something of your life reflected here.
so, i just want to say, i think the blame here lies squarely on the shoulders of cishetero amatonormativity. end of the day, we are all being crushed by forces that say “you should be this way, or no way at all”, and then actively erect barriers to other ways of life.
for the people that react with anxiety or dismissal toward other-other ways of being, i ask you,with love, for self reflection.
if you have been less than your best and most generous self toward ace and aro people in the past because of very real trauma, you can be different going forward. i highly encourage you to simply read the tags of this post and listen to what other people have said. sit with it. and then ask what you could do differently next time.

I actually do feel like the "unemployed friend on a Tuesday" meme actually helps de-stigmatize unemployment because it frequently affirms that when you don't have a job you're more likely to be getting up to some weird shit rather than just lazing around. But I also feel like the unemployed friend is frequently up to some random shit because there's a whole pile of miscellaneous life tasks that full-time employment keeps people from. The unemployed friend is helping their cousin move, or babysitting, or checking in with a neighbor with mobility issues. The unemployed friend is a walking thesis on the inflexibility of our current labor landscape and just how much work exists outside of work.

Ever since reading my first time loop-based book as a preteen, I’ve had a Secret Time Loop Code Word. It’s been the same word all these years. I’ve never written it down anywhere or told anyone what it is, just kept it tucked away in my brain. That way, if someone I know ever confided in me that they were stuck in a time loop, I would have a way to confirm it: I would tell them the time loop code word and instruct them to find and talk to me again on the next loop. Of course, if it’s a time loop, I wouldn’t remember telling them the code word. But they’d remember it. So if someone ever came to me and said “I’m stuck in a time loop, and the time loop code word is [X],” and it was indeed the word I’ve secretly held onto for most of my life, I would know that we had had this conversation in a previous loop and that they were telling the truth.
Will this ever be useful? Almost certainly not. But hey, there’s nothing wrong with having a completely absurd contingency plan. In case of time loops.
