(The Nonexistent Knight โ Italo Calvino)
Have you ever heard of a suit of armor animated solely by willpower and faith?
Agilulfo, the character in this novel, has succeeded.
While he lacks physical individuality, a vagabond named Gurdulรน lacks individuality of conscience because he acts without even thinking about the consequences. And he will become Agilulfo's squire, no less.
A series of events, to say the least, incredible, will involve, first and foremost, Agilulfo and some rather important knights, such as Rambaldo, Torrismondo, and Bradamante, and as the events unfold, involving all these characters, there are noteworthy twists.
But who is the mystical figure who, through sheer willpower and faith, manages to animate a suit of snow-white armor?
Agilulfo is the embodiment of the "ideal" man, depicted as a creature of the utmost integrity, obedient and dutiful. He protects and defends chivalric ideals with all his might, without questioning the dictates of those who send him into battle. An example impossible to humanize, since men cannot call themselves so pure and whole.
For this reason, at a certain point, Agilulfo will cease to exist and abandon the mythical, impeccably white armor, rendering it inanimate.
In fact, it will be Rambaldo who will don its pieces and exploit them to win the heart of the beautiful Bradamante, who was hopelessly in love with Agilulfo in his shining armor.
The deception behind the facade, the intention behind the ideal, thus emerges. The cunning that loves to insinuate itself between the folds of righteousness.
No man can call himself perfect, upright, and pure of spirit.
And if so, then it is a nonexistent being. A spirit animating a shell.
Agilulfo Emo Bertrandino of the Guildiverni and the Others of Corbentraz and Sura, knight of Selimpia Citeriore and Fez.
For this illustration, I carefully studied the armor, its composition, and its structure.
I tried to convey the idea that it was indeed empty inside, at least partially raising the helmet. For the whiteness, however, I did my utmost to make it as white as possible.
I hope I succeeded!
