Colour of the Year 2020

Pantone’s colour of the year is Classic Blue.

Blue has been an important colour in art and decor since ancient times, from the use of the lapis lazuli stone in Ancient Egypt to ultramarine pigment in the Renaissance. Blue was also used in Chinese porcelain, and even in the stained glass windows of cathedral windows in the Middle Ages. Blue pigment was often very difficult to make and source, making it one of the most expensive to use in the arts.

The invention of synthetic pigments in the 18th and 19th centuries expanded the colour pallet of artists extensively, making blue much more accessible. Blue was one of the colours used most by Impressionists, including cobalt blue, ultramarine and cerulean blue.

These objects from our collection which incorporate the colour of the year are from Japan, Egypt, China and Europe.
