Seth and El Rey
So while on yet again another s1 rewatch, I realized something beautiful. Seth had already received his desired El Rey from the very beginning. We’re all familiar with Seth’s favourite line to drop ‘ I want my free ticket to El Rey/I want to die on a beach/I want what you promised ‘ etc etc. This tune has been sung from S1 all the way to S3 - but what I realized while on my rewatch was that Carlos actually delivered. Carlos promised Seth El Rey, and El Rey he did receive.
Carlos literally brought El Rey to seth - and it all happened thanks to a country Christian boy on a journey to get his girl back. It all starts with episode 2. Let’s go back to that scene where Carlos gets out of his fancy car and flags down Kyle. The way I interpret that whole Kyle/Carlos scene is that Carlos simply wanted to feed in that moment and wahey lucky for him this kid is suddenly in the rear view mirror. When Carlos bites Kyle, it does two things 1) it introduces the viewer to the mindset of a culebra and the importance of the soul (wink wink) and outlining the significance of the soul etc - but 2) It gives him the help he needs to help Seth and Richie cross the border. Just before Kyle shows up, Carlos was talking to Seth over the phone promising a way across the border. He consumes Kyle’s soul and in that moment he automatically sees the Fuller’s in his mind - a family on their way to Mexico conveniently travelling in a big old RV. Perfect, Carlos thinks. Use this family to get the Gecko’s across the border. The daughter wants to go home, but not when I’m finished making sure she WANTS to stick with her family and continue this journey to Mexico. So, portraying Kyle’s image - he vexes the family etc making sure Kate decides she no longer wants anything to do with Kyle and wahey - the Fuller’s are back on track to Mexico. Now all that needs to happen is for the Gecko’s to cross paths with the Fuller’s and as destiny would have it, they cross paths very shortly afterwards in episode 4. The Fuller’s hadn’t even dropped their bags in their room when Kate literally stopped in front of Seth, of all people! Now, When I say Carlos delivered El Rey to Seth there and then, I’m not suggesting he knew SethKate were gonna end up together because as far as we know, Carlos ain’t the psychic type haha. But, he’s literally responsible for putting Kate directly onto Seth’s path and we all know the importance of Kate in Seth’s life. Carlos himself may not have known, but this prophecy was going to unfold one way or another. It was fate that willed it - but Carlos instigated it. El Rey wasn’t a place. El Rey was a person…and that person was Kate.
The way I interpret El Rey is that it’s not necessarily a heavenly paradise, but a heavenly existence to the individual who is lucky enough to receive his or her El Rey. Going back to that flashback where Carlos is talking to Seth about El Rey in prison, Carlos assures him that it will offer an eternity of peace and ‘’never having to look over your shoulder’’ - the ideal existence. Of course, we can’t dismiss Seth’s desire for El Rey because of Richie. He wants this heavenly paradise so that his brother may also live in peace. What could be more heavenly to Seth Gecko? A life time beside his brother, peace…and a lifetime beside Kate Fuller. *An important note about Kate being El Rey was that she was the first woman to accept the brother’s unbreakable bond and rather than see them separated - she was the one who wanted to them to unite* What occurred in s1 and s2 was this - Seth received El Rey, but he failed to understand that it was right in front of him. What’s beautiful about this is that Seth must go on a journey to not only understand this, but accept it and in the end, fight for it. At the end of S2, Seth had to tragically understand what he once had. He then had to journey towards getting her back and as clearly shown throughout S3, it’s safe to say he recognized just how much he needed Kate and how she was the El Rey he was looking for all along. Carlos promised Seth El Rey and delivered. But afterwards, it was up to Seth to realize this and journey towards his El Rey on his own. As Carlos Coto stated, season 3 was all about Seth’s journey.
Something else in S1 intrigued me and got me thinking even further. There’s a scene between Seth and Narciso were they sit down to share a drink at the twister. Narciso asks “so what did he (Carlos) offer you to rob that bank?” And Seth replies with “a ticket to El Rey” “is he still selling that line? El rey? It’s a myth, amigo” “are you saying it’s not real?!” - But an interesting choice of words voiced by Narciso afterwards is what got me thinking. “i’m saying it’s not for you” I think Narciso used those words because he knew damn well that El Rey was paradise for whoever was lucky enough to get it. Paradise in the form of what ever paradise may be in the eyes of the one who wished for it, but most importantly - paradise for the one who DESERVED it. Being the pompous ass that Narciso was, he knew El Rey was for the likes of Gods and heroes. Certainly not common thieves from Kansas City. He told Seth El Rey wasn’t for him because he wasn’t worthy of it. He was just a mere mortal and a low life probably in his eyes. But this is a beautiful contrast with Kate. While all these people in Seth’s life has seen him as unworthy (his Father, Narciso etc) - Kate saw him as the opposite! She literally called him a hero in the finale and at that point - he had most definitely transitioned from the common thief to the hero. ‘’You brought them all together. Those thieves and those bloodsuckers. You made them all heroes.’’ In this moment, Seth’s El Rey is not only standing before him, but she’s declaring him worthy and heroic. To add that extra ounce of sethkate pain - his El Rey admits there then that she loves him.

a good show™
Peeta says it will be okay. We have each other. And the book. We can make them understand in a way that will make them braver. But one day I’ll have to explain about my nightmares. Why they came. Why they won’t ever really go away.
I’ll tell them how I survive it. I’ll them that on bad mornings, it feels impossible to take pleasure in anything because I’m afraid it could be taken away. That’s when I make a list in my head of every act of goodness I’ve seen someone do. It’s like a game. Repetitive. Even a little tedious after more than twenty years.
But there are much worse games to play.
Would you fucking listen to me! Buddy we’ve been down this road before. Yeah? Come on, buddy.
