Urahara listened patiently to Shinji’s explanation, nodding every so often. Once the words ‘free of charge’ were mentioned, however, his eyes narrowed ever so slightly. But before he had a chance to respond Mashiro called across the room. Ears perking up, he turned and smiled.
“That, Mashiro-chan, is what humans call a ‘pez-dispenser’! If you pull back the head, a piece of candy comes out!” smiling, he walked over and picked up one shaped like Kurosaki-kun, popping a piece of candy into his mouth. “That one is shaped like Hitsugaya-taichou~ You’d be surprised how fast his models sell out!”
Distracted completely, he continued chatting away with Mashiro about the various figures he had in stock, completely ignoring the other Vizard.
This man had the attention span of a squirrel. He frowned as he watched Kisuke get talkative with his parter in crime for the day. He made himself at home and plopped down on a cushion. He had to wait for some time after that. Urahara and Mashiro just kept talking, and talking, and talking. He wondered how someone's mouth could run so fast and for so long. He nearly fell asleep waiting for them to finish up.
When Kisuke finally stopped to breathe he took this as an opportunity to cut in. "Ya remember me? We ain't here for your candy dispensers. If it makes ya feel any better you can put whatever we take on my credit." It was whatever it would take to get him to pay attention. He already had a lot on his credit from when he had to buy their shabby TV set. "Mashiro, kick 'im if he doesn't." He was half serious and half kidding. If he didn't let him put it on credit because he was that desperate for money he'd need Mashiro to give him a good kick.
Mashiro’s focus remained on the ex-Captain. She had completely disregarded their original reason for coming here, now only concerned with each new contraption that Urahara was showing her. Whether or not she knew what they were--even with his explanation--she was intrigued. She had forgotten that Shinji was even there at all until he finally spoke up. Turning to him, a mess of candy dispensers in her hand, she pouted slightly. “Kick~?” she repeated.
Looking back to Urahara, she cocked her head down to where she was wiggling her foot and raised an eyebrow. “You heard him!” she said, a smirk curling her lips. Shoving the candy dispensers towards him, Mashiro rested her hands on her hips. “Put those on it too, ne?” She flashed Shinji a proud grin before turning back to the shopkeeper. “What else have you got to help us out, Kisuke?”

Urahara glanced up from the book he was reading as soon as he heard the knocks on the door and a familiar voice calling his name. He quickly marked his place and hopped up, throwing the doors open.
“Why hello there~!” he said, looking from Mashiro to Shinji and back again. He quickly stepped aside, allowing them entrance into the shop. As they passed, he eyed the odd pieces they were carrying curiously. The lamp in particular. Once they threw down their load in the middle of the room, he walked forward, stepping around their mess carefully. Holding his fan to his face, he smiled.
“How can I help you?”
He was going to be straight forward. He needed to hurry up or else Urahara might start chattering away and they would be stuck there until sundown. "We're fixin' up the hell hole, so we're in need of some furniture. The junkyard had a couple of keepers but besides that, I got nothin'. Got anything we can use?" He met eyes with him and added "...free of charge?"
He knew full well Kisuke didn't make a lot of money off of this shop, but he was low on cash too and he was still an old friend after all. He was in awe this place was so well kept too despite the lack of customers. He could almost see himself in the polished wooden floors. He got the feeling those kids Kisuke had living with him were responsible for this.
As soon as they were welcomed inside, Mashiro took to wandering about the shop. She assumed that Shinji would explain their reason for stopping by, which meant that she was free to ogle the various items that lined the shelves. For the most part, she didn’t have any idea what the majority, if not all, of the sundries were for, but they were displayed nicely and many of them were colorful or interestingly shaped and that was enough to hold her attention, at least until she spotted something else. As the other Vizard spoke, Mashiro fiddled with a few things; at first, she simply looked, but then she was picking them up, turning them over in her hand, shaking them. She didn’t give the men a chance to finish with their serious discussion before raising the oddity above her head.
“Oi, Kisuke~!” she called, turning her wrist and listening to the small contraption rattle. “What does this do, mm?”

She didn’t seem too keen on taking the record player home but he didn’t let that stop him. He felt smug when she stopped at “But-“. She was the only one that listened to him when it was just casual hanging out. All the other vizards replied with loud retorts and maybe a smack upside the head from Hiyori if he tried to order them around when things weren’t serious. His eyes swept over the junkyard after she told him she hadn’t found anything. He sure didn’t see anything else out here worth their time. He just didn’t want to throw in the towel just yet. He didn’t want to go back to his same boring routine AND have the same boring warehouse to walk around in.
“Quit yer whinin’, we’ll think of somethin’!” He had to think fast or else she was going to throw herself on the ground like she always did when she didn’t like how things were going. He stumbled back over to his prized record player and tripped on a cargo box on the way. He landed on his knees, probably skinning them in the process. “Ow, ow…huh?” A small object made of fine woven cloth stood out to him on the ground next to him. He picked it up and turned it over in his hands. It was a hat. A green one, at that. It was familiar looking but he couldn’t put his finger on it but then a certain idiotic blonde came to mind. Kisuke Urahara. Then that thought bloomed into yet another thought. What if Kisuke had something for them at his shop? There was bound to be something in that little shop he worked so hard to keep running. He still didn’t know how the place was still up and open for business since almost no one came in and bought anything.
He stood up despite the new pain in his knees and held up the hat so Mashiro could look at see. “Change of plans. How about we go pay Kisuke a visit? I bet he has somethin’ worth lookin’ at. If he doesn’t have anything then we’ll go home and call it quits.” He hoped that would motivate her. At least she could do a little “shopping” around. He prayed Kisuke would be merciful and give them a discount. Or even better: Free stuff. All he had was a quarter in his breast pocket and he was saving for something out of the vending machine down the block. Kisuke was going to be their one and only hope now. Now he was going to owe him double what he already owed him.
Mashiro eyed him, her gaze shifting between Shinji’s face and the hat that he was holding. It confused her until he mentioned the ex-Captain, and then she was struck with the same idea that he seemed to have. It had been quite a while since she had stopped by the shop or even spoken to Urahara. And it wasn’t because she disliked him. If anything, he was one of the more interesting people to come out of Soul Society at the same time that they did. And of course, she was indebted to him for what he did to help them which, whether or not any of them admitted it, was always in the back of her mind. Giving one swift nod, Mashiro’s expression flipped and she flashed a grin at the blond. “Let’s go, Sheenji~!” she said excitedly.
Running over to where she had left the lamp, she grabbed the base of it and dragged it along behind her. Any doubts that she had felt about the unpromising junkyard were easily thwarted by the new potential that the Urahara shop held. Whether or not Kisuke actually had anything that would be useful to them was an entirely separate issue, but they would cross that bridge when they came to it. For now, Mashiro was just glad to be leaving that disgusting junkyard, making her way past the gates and as far away from the piles of unusable garbage as quickly as she could.
It wasn’t until they were on the sidewalk and the two were receiving more perplexing stares than usual that she realized perhaps it wasn’t for the best that the lamp trail behind her aimlessly against the pavement. Mashiro stopped and hugged it to herself. It was taller than she was, which made it difficult to see, but that was hardly enough to stop her from tottering along with the cumbersome light.
When they finally made it to the shop, she let go of it with a relieved sigh, steadying it on the ground before she hopped to the doors. Mashiro knocked a couple of times. She cocked her head to the side, attempting to see inside through the narrow crack between the two sliding doors. “Hello~oo! Kisuke~!”

You’re so dumb, Kensei. You have no idea how long I can stay Hollowfied! 15 hours. 15 hours! I could keep this up all night!

The object of interest had him mesmerized. This record player was in mint condition!! It was beyond him why anyone would throw this out in the junk heap. In the background of his view, Mashiro fell on her back after jumping on a crappy bean bag chair. He didn’t think much of it at all, knowing Mashiro was fine because she always got right back up after falling over.
Without hesitation he got a close look at this beautiful record player. He inspected it from every angle possible. The more he looked the more he wanted it for himself. He had to take it home no matter what. He felt giddy and actually happy just looking at it. He hadn’t seen one of these in the human world in years. A while back he had a record player that he bought in this world. This was when they first got here and had no idea where they were or how things worked. He played that thing for hours on hours and finally after years of playing his jazz, it broke. Whenever he tried to buy another record player they weren’t popular anymore and they weren’t sold anywhere. It was all about cassette tapes after they went out of style. And now here stood a perfect one.
Today wasn’t going to suck after all. He almost jumped when Mashiro asked him what he was ogling at. He turned and pointed, almost a little too excited to show her. “Mashiro, take a lookit this! I dunno what kinda idiot threw this out, but we’re takin’ it home. No if ands or buts.” He paused to calm himself down. He was getting overly excited. He gave a serious frown, trying to look all businesslike. He couldn’t go around looking like some spazzy teenager. “Ya find anything else over there we can use?”
He probably already knew the answer to that question but he thought to ask just in case he didn’t happen to see her pick something useful up while he was busy drooling over the record player. He was still bubbling over with excitement on the inside at the thought he finally had a good old fashioned record player again. He didn’t care how silly they looked walking back home with arms full of oldies stuff. But then again, they probably weren’t going to have much to bring home at this rate. All they had was the lamp and his treasure. They might have to give up on the junkyard sooner or later.
Mashiro watched him for a minute, surprised that something had caught his attention and held it for so long. She walked with him to where it was. She tilted her head. She bent down to look at it from underneath. There wasn’t anything overly exciting about it. Why it had intrigued him so much, she had no idea. And she opened her mouth to say so just as he began to speak. Her nose wrinkled. “This?” she asked, pointing a finger at the old machine. “But Shinji--” Ah, he had said no buts. “Ah, mmm…” Mashiro chewed her lip, trying to come up with a different word. “Urr…It’s…fine, I guess,” she finally muttered, still eyeing the record player with a dubious pout. Maybe once she saw it in action…
At his question, she heaved a dramatic sigh; she let her entire body sulk. “No.” Mashiro crossed her arms over her chest. For whatever reason, she had expected more from the junkyard--stupid, now that she thought about it. And after discovering the lamp, her spirits had lifted quite a bit. Now, however, and because of the failed bean bag chair, she was more frustrated than anything. The junkyard no longer seemed worth the effort. Especially when all that they had to show for themselves was a less-than-stylish light and this music thing that Shinji was obsessing over.
“I want to go home,” she said at last. Her fists balled at her sides. “The junkyard is boring, Shinji.” Mashiro wasn’t entirely ready to give up on their decision to renovate the warehouse. But if she had to stay here for any longer then she was definitely going to have a fit. If only they had some money to buy some cute things to spruce up that crappy building. Pressing a finger to her lips, she pondered the idea of going elsewhere, but nothing came to mind. She blamed the bean bag chair.

He wandered around the rows of junk piles and finally found his own pile of junk to sift through for gems. He grabbed a hold of a handle sticking out of the pile and tugged it free. Pieces of garbage fell from above, a disco ball landing a hit on his head on it’s way down from the top. He yelped and kicked it aside in frustration, not wanting anything that hit him to be hung in their house (he didn’t particularly care for the 70’s anyway). He didn’t want what he pulled out either, which was just a dusty old chest.
He resumed digging again, trying to ignore his throbbing head. He began tossing useless items over his shoulder. Toilet seats, plungers, broken alarm clocks, even a creepy-ass doll. He wasn’t having very much luck. He heard Mashiro’s high, excited voice call for him and he stopped where he was and looked up.
He peeked over to see. “This had better be good. What’d ya find?” He eyed the lamp on the ground next to her. As soon as he saw it, he knew it would fit right into their living room. Maybe Lisa could read finally read at night on the couch or something. It was still in good condition, like it had just been made. A couple of scratches here and there, but it would work!
He nodded once in approval “Looks good ‘nuff ta me. I knew ya’d come in handy, Mashiro!” The fact she found something improved his mood and will power. “I think I’ll stay over here by you. There ain’t much to look at over where I was.” He glanced over at the pile next to Mashiro’s and something among the garbage caught his eye.
What that what he thought it was?
Most of what was around them was either complete crap, useless, or disgusting, and the fact that she could find something that would be somewhat beneficial to them was enough motivation to her to keep going. Unfortunate that Shinji didn’t seem to be having the same luck. At his remark, she gave him a thumbs up; having his approval made her feel even better. And having a good attitude was about the only thing that was going to keep her here, digging through the huge mounds of garbage. She was about to suggest that they go back to where she had found the lamp when his attention was caught by something else.
“Mm? Shinji?” She stepped closer, trying to win back his focus. And when that failed, she stood beside him, standing on her tiptoes so that she could see what it was that he was looking at.
In the pile of junk across from them, there was a record player. And whether or not it was in working condition, it was probably what he was looking at. Of course, just beyond that was a bean bag chair. It wasn’t anything special, but it was such a ridiculous thing that Mashiro couldn’t help but pay attention to it.
Pushing past him, she hopped towards it and pulled it out a bit from the pile so that she could get a better look. The pattern was boring, black with various athletics balls, but she could throw a blanket over it and it wouldn’t even matter. Mashiro smiled at the thought. She jumped with the expectation of landing on the soft cushion. And instead, she realized--all too late--why it was that the bean bag chair had been thrown into the trash in the first place. There must have been a hole somewhere that, in her few seconds of looking it over, she hadn’t seen. Because she came down onto it, felt as the beans burst out of the side, and hit the ground with a thud. She stood up quickly. And, ignoring the pain in her back, Mashiro brought her leg back and quickly kicked forward, punting the piece of deflated fabric across the junkyard.
She stood for a minute, a pout on her lips, before turning back to the blond. “Now what were you ogling, Shinji~?”
