His smile was infectious. Not just to the point where it made her smile to, but where it generally cheered her up. It was nice to have at least someone around she didn’t feel the need to hide from. “Well, whatever reason it is we’re back.. you still look cheerful as always.”

“Surely we didn’t miss too much. I mean, everyone’s pretty much forced to follow the same every day schedule. How much trouble could they have gotten themselves into?” Probably a lot. Possibly a lot she didn’t care too much about anyhow. “Have you settled in yet? Oh! Does Angeline already know you’re back?” She wiggled her eyebrows, still utterly in the dark when it concerned their past.

“I’m trying to be cheerful as always... I guess it helps that your here and my family isn’t though,” he said with a dismissive shrug. “No... unless someone got killed or something I don’t think we’ll have missed anything big,” he said with a shake of his head.

“I’m starting to settle... No... I’ve not seen her about yet, I’m looking still but... We’ll have to see,” he said with a small nod, surprised for a moment before he remembered that Luce didn’t know about their past and had been trying her best to help him win Angie’s heart back again. Not that it had been working so far by any means.

“If it’ll make you feel better, I would love to pinky swear. Anything to make your transition back to patient life as fun as possible.”

“Okay pinky swear then! And thank you,” Mason replied excitedly, holding his hand out with his little finger extended.

“Give it time! I’m sure someone will come in and think you’re the devil. This is a place just full of crazy people you know. But for now, you are definitely okay. I promise I don’t think you’re a bad person.”

“Okay good, you gonna pinky swear on that promise?”

The warm embrace came as a welcoming surprise; a genuine smile breaking through as she held him as tightly as he held her. She didn’t want to let him go. He was the first friendly face she had seen that day, and genuinely one of the only reasons why coming back didn’t suck completely. 

“Hi.. I’ve missed you, you know that?,” she mused, holding him a little tighter before creating enough space between them so that she was able to properly look at him. “I eh.. well, do I need to explain how I am if I’m back here?” She attempted a joke, a soft chuckle escaping her lips although it wasn’t very convincing. They all knew why they were there. “But well, I’m back. So how are you? Did I miss a lot while I was away?”

She took the liberty of leaning in for another hug. She had missed him a lot and their fair share of phone calls hadn’t exactly been the same as seeing him on a daily basis. 

“Of course I know that, I’ve missed you too!” he replied, whining a little and relaxing his hold as she made space between them, “I suppose you don’t need to explain no...” the boy said with a sad pout before offering his friend a cheerful smile to try and lift her spirits a little.

“I’m alright I guess... I don’t think you did but then again I’ve been away too and I’m just starting to try and work out what I missed,” he replied with a shrug, eagerly hugging his friend; he was glad that there was at least one person who would show him the kindness and affection that he recieved so little of otherwise. Lucy was his friend. The best friend he’d had in a long time and her absence had upset him a great deal more than he’d expected- even being able to talk hadn’t been enough to fill that little hole called ‘friendship’ in his life.

“I’ve been here for a little while, and I’m not going anywhere. Not for the foreseeable future.” She figured she’d be doomed to wander the halls at least until her wrists healed to pale white scars. Something easily concealable. “And I’d think you’ll be around now, since you’re a repeat offender.”

“Yes a repeat offender! How fucking ominous that sounds... still... I’m starting to like it better here than at home even if it is a little boring... People don’t look at me like I’m the spawn of satan.”

Nervously meandering through her room, Lucinda was nowhere near finishing unpacking her back. She knew she should hurry as the day after would most likely be filled with therapy sessions and group dinners. Something she was not looking forwards to. No, she should probably get her room together now. Still, a knot had formed in the pit of her stomach. She didn’t want to wait around for her roommate to arrive. She didn’t want to pretend she was pleased with whatever girl she had been assigned to. The whole situation made her nervous to the point of nausea. No, there was something more important she had to attend to first. 

Leaving the heap of clothes on her bed for what it was she slipped out of the room. By now she knew the building from the top of her head, making it surprisingly easy to reach her destination - all the while wishing she wouldn’t come across someone she knew. 

Within no time she had reached his room, Mason’s, yet a simple knock on the door told her there was no one around. It frustrated her a little. She had hoped to find him immediately and now she had to wait around once more. Not that anyone was allowed to lock their doors around here. 

She had been sitting on his bed for approximately half an hour, sincerely wishing that this was actually his room and they hadn’t switched him to another. The sudden noise of a door opening had her startled; a hopeful smile twitching at the corner of her lips as she peaked up. 

Mason finally got to his room, having decided he’d socialised enough for one day to slink back off to his little private(ish) space to daydream about all the things he could get up to in the asylum. He’d been a little sad to be back with few familiar faces to keep him company... but people have been friendly enough and obviously knew nothing about why he was there in the first place, so everything was good.  He let out a small surprised squeak at first, seeing someone on his bed was not exactly what he expected when he got back to his room- if it had been Angeline he’d have thought he was dreaming. Instead it was Lucy- and when he recognised that face it was like it was his birthday. 

It had taken him a few seconds at first since currently, as far as he was concerned, the girl was home and away from the asylum. This was most definitely a pleasant surprise to him. “Lucy!” he cried out before leaping across the space between them in a matter of seconds and wrapping his arms around the girl; while he squeezed her as tight as he possibly could he began to babble, “I didn’t expect to see you here! How are you? How’s life? Why are you in the asylum? I thought you were home! Oh I’ve missed you so so so so much!”

“Thank you! Sunshine only goes so far in this place, you’ve got to hold on to what you’ve got. Here I was thinking that no one worthwhile would ever be in this place.”

“Oh you can find worthwhile people in here, it just takes a lot of looking... the only worry after that is whether or not they stay.”

“You never know, the world is just full of surprises. One day there’s bound to be a good one. I can also inform you that nothing good has changed here either. Except for me. I’m now here to brighten your everyday life.”

“That’s wonderful to know At least there’ll be one ray of sunshine around here.”

“No silly, you have to have one designated place that you can point to and say there are the crazy people. You can feel very proud and think there they all are and look how sane I am. Even if sane is fighting and miserable.” She shrugged at the morbid thought. “Thank you for the update, I was worried something interesting had happened.”

“I don’t think sane should be fighting and miserable. That doesn’t seem like a very good kind of sane...” Mason said with a small pout, shaking his head, “Oh why would anything interesting happen outside?”

“Teen angst.” Her tone of voice was completely emotionless but she cleared her throat and flashed a smile, “Very fun stuff. How was the outside world? I haven’t been out in weeks.”

“The outside world hasn’t changed an awful lot to be fair. Everyone is still fighting and the news is as miserable as ever. It’s a wonder they lock us in here when really everyone out there is doing the same stuff and living happily at home.”

margotemerson:

“Mason. Alright cool.” She didn’t offer to shake hands, just smiled. “So what made you wind up here? Besides the brick I mean.”

“I did something that people thought was bad and then I ended up getting checked to see if I was crazy and they aid I had ADHD and some other stuff and my dad decided after that to chuck me in here rather than try and deal with me at home. How about you?”

“Until you throw something at me. Then you’re out of luck.” He didn’t act like someone who had anger problems, but who knows here. “I’m Margot by the way.”

“I won’t throw anything at you unless you give me a reason to!” he said, liking Margot since she seemed pretty friendly.  “I’m Mason. Nice to meet you.”

“Just wait until one of them throws a brick.” She wasn’t sure that making friends in here was possible. People to spend time with as hours ticked away, yes. People to visit on weekends and talk about good times with, no. “You’re right, you can’t be upset with me for being crazy because you’re crazy too.”

“If one of them throws a brick then I’ll throw it right back!” he said with a chuckle, shaking his head, wondering who he’d known before who might still be here... he supposed exploring would be the only way to find out. “Exactly! Its wonderful.”

“Being back here isn’t going to be much fun either. Seeing as there’s nothing to do that isn’t considered a danger to yourself or others.”

“Yeah but, at least it’s a bit easier making friends in here. Nobody judges me the same way as back home.”

“Doesn’t sound uncontrollable. Sometimes people just need a brick in their window, it really puts things in perspective. Parents can’t be trusted as an accomplice to those kinds of things. Welcome back then, I’m sure you’ve missed it here.”

“Sometimes people do need a brick in their window, it’s nice to have someone that agrees with me! No they really can’t... I guess I’ve missed it. Being back home wasn’t as fun as I remembered it.”

“Well that’s a downer. What happened to Eichen being a functional hospital?”

“Things were going okay, dad took me out to give me another chance at home, but you throw a brick through one persons window and suddenly he’s calling you uncontrollable…”
