For most people, fame and fortune would seem to be the most obvious result of what you had accomplished. The quietest would admit that you saved the galaxy, and the most exuberant would say you saved the entire universe and every species within it. You had done something--no, many things, you had done a multitude of things nobody else could have ever considered of in their wildest of dreams: you stopped the reapers.
But fame and fortune, while quite a bountiful gift at first, always fades off to rumor and stories as time went on. Yours was no different--as the years moved past the war to end all wars, the story of Commander Shepard fell into something akin to legend, and you realized it was much for the best.Ā
After all, motherhood isnāt exactly something that goes well with the notoriety of a war hero.
Several years may have tamed the story of your victory, but it did gift you with what could be one of the most wonderful things in the world--a loving family, settled down and whose worst fear is if someone remembered to go grocery shopping for dinner. Combined with two young daughters, and you couldnāt have asked for much better of a life.
Being able to go to the park together was such a simple gesture. For some, it was a little adventure that warranted no further thought, no question, no consideration more than the weather. For you, it meant so much more--being able to see your daughters playing without fear, so sit with your wife in passive domesticity, to simply enjoy life the way it was meant to be enjoyed.
You and Liara watched as the two young girls played among each other, dirtying their hands as they claimed to be digging for ancient treasure--as well as destroying a few flowers.
āAt least theyāre having fun,ā Liara said to herself, only sounding mildly worried about the mess around or on her children.Ā āAfter all, Iād much rather they have too much curiosity than none at all.ā
āThey take after you,ā you said with a laugh, eyeing Liara pointedly after a moment.Ā āI remember someone getting in a lot more trouble when they dug through the park garden.ā
The breeze pressed gently against your cheek when Liara feigned offense to your words. She met your gaze and smiled.
āIf you would like to stifle their budding quest for knowledge, be my guest.ā She gestured towards the two girls with a dramatic flair, but you merely swatted her hands down with a chuckle. Liara let her hands fall back to her lap again, her body pressed gently against your own.Ā āBesides, we can afford to replace a few flowers--assuming they dare yell at the person who single-handedly stopped the Reaper invasion.ā
āPeople have nearly forgotten my face and you know it Liara.ā
āBut,ā A hand gently fell to yours, grasping it in comfort.Ā āTheyāll never forget your name--your story will become a legend years from now--ā She turned to look to the two children, tossing dirt at one another and trying to convince themselves that a small twig was some sort of discovery.Ā ā--They will be the ones telling their daughters about you, the one who saved the galaxy.ā
āOf course they will, along with how I told horrible mom jokes or grounded them for trying to climb out the window,ā Your words fell from your lips in humor, a relieving moment that you could talk about such simple, domestic problems.Ā āMy legend will be absolutely untainted.ā
Liara looked at you with a gentle pull at her lips, but didnāt try to deny or argue your humble brush of fame--every hero deserved their moment of triumph, but they also deserved the comfort that came afterward, the simple, pleasant life that all people deserved. The legend of Shepard may live on in some part of the universe, but you were happier that you and your family could leave peacefully in the rest.
