Hi! I recently started watching J-dramas and came across your page where you do English subs.
I’m used to hyping Korean and Chinese dramas on Twitter, but since I’m new to J-dramas and I just found out about this gatekeeping culture, I wanted to ask first for permission and make sure I’m not breaking any rules.
Would you be okay with me:
- Live tweeting or hyping a J-drama on Twitter, like posting screenshots or short clips that include your subtitles?
- Making edits (for example, a hot edit of an actor or their character) if I include your translation in the intro? If you’re also worried about the credit, I can credit you on the twitter caption for the translation/subtitles
Just wanted to check with you first out of respect. Thank you so much!
Hi, thank you for reaching out.
Personally, I really don't mind if you want to tweet or make edits using my subs.
All I ask is for you to not use official hashtag or the title of the J-Drama that you're going to tweet.
Yes, I know that if you don't use the title of the J-Drama it defeats the whole purpose of hyping it up, but because Japanese law is Japanese law, their law about copyright is REALLY strict and you (and all of us tbh) can get DCMA'd by them as the result. That is one of the reasons that J-Drama communities can feel a bit gatekeepy.
That's why fansubbers don't use the JP title on the tweets, don't use official hashtags, use different creative fonts, write it as one word, etc.
There are also the whole stealing subtitles from fansubbers and profiting from those subs while the original fansubbers get nothing.
I hope you're understand where we're coming from.
I don't speak for the whole community, so I think that it's better for you to talk to other fansubbers one by one if you want to use their subs.
One more thing, if you're going to use my subs, please remove my name and only direct them here if they ask where they can find the subs for the j-drama that you're tweeting about via DM.
