Doctor's Hours: Distance Consultations for Visual Artists, 1/12 & 1/13

Skype with Our Doctors: Monday, January 12 & Tuesday, January 13, 2015, 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM EST

New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) is pleased to offer Distance Consultations, a program that provides individual consultations for national and international artists living outside of NYC, who are looking to connect with New York City arts professionals; curators, gallerists, and arts consultants. 

Participants in Distance Consultations may book one-on-one individual appointments with NYFA consultants via Skype. The sessions provide an opportunity for practical advice and feedback on presentation of your work, your website, or an upcoming application.   WHERE: Via Skype COST: $50 US for 30-minute consultation; there is a two-appointment limit per registrant.

REGISTRATION OPENS: Thursday, December 18 at 11:00 AM EST. The link for registration will be made available here at that time precisely. *Please note: Artists should be mindful of any time zone differences before signing up. Times are listed in Eastern Standard Time. When you sign up you will need to make a login account for your first registration.

Artsy: And so why did Nicholas Serota move from #6 to #1?

MR: Well it’s the Tate; it’s incidental that it’s him. I think it’s partly because of the massive global expansion of the Tate. I mean look at the acquisition committee; it’s like 240+ people and half of them are on that list. And I think it’s partly about how museums in general have expanded their role and not just to validate artists, which they always have, but also to validate collectors on their committees—that’s a good collector, that’s a bad collector.

MR: I think according to the list, it means having the four criteria I discussed, but I think particularly having influence on what kind of art is shown, which is why artists tend not to be too prominent on [the list].

A huge thanks to Katapult Art for the workshop they presented to our artists in September. Our presenter, Annelien Bruins, explained that art doesn’t sell itself. Like any other business, to sell your art, you need to formulate a well thought out plan. 

There are a number of marketing tactics that you can use to increase interest in your work and ultimately boost sales. In today’s competitive art world, when collectors purchase a work of art, they are not only investing in an object, they are also investing in you — the artist — your story and your future success.

So it is important to tell collectors your story either through a short artist statement or in the descriptions of your artworks. Here are some tips Bruins offered to create your personal brand as a unique artist

Choose several key words specific to you and your work, and use them throughout your artist statement

Reference your inspirations (collectors may not know you, but they know artists like Klimt or Schiele)

Provide both a material and conceptual description of your artwork that doesn’t require an MA in Fine Arts to understand

A strong, well-honed personal brand will provide you with support and confidence when discussing your practice with gallerists and collectors, something every professional artist needs to be able to do.
