England came so close to another extra time, which would have meant Pickford, Stones, Walker, Rice and maybe Saka having to play 2 hrs of football for the third time in 11 days. That would have essentially been the equivalent of an additional match! Watkins' goal coming when it did was soooo important.

It's taken us some time to come to terms with it but the group stages of Euro 2024 have come to an end and we've lost a third of the teams. We bid a sad farewell to the early leavers and look back at some of their best bits.

HUNGARY

Led by the youngest ever captain in Euros history (you go Domi!), Hungary had high hopes for this summer but their journey started with a 3-1 defeat to Switzerland. Their second game went much the same way with the host country defeating them 2-0. Their only victory, against Scotland, came after a single goal scored in added time of their final match. But let’s not think about the negatives! We’ll share some of our favourite moments below.

UKRAINE

How unlucky were Ukraine?! With all four teams in group E ending on a fairly respectable 4 points, Ukraine found themselves going home on goal difference. That 3-0 defeat to Romania on matchday 1 really cost them 😩.

Our favourite thing about Ukraine has been the intense passion displayed by both the players and their fans. We can really see what representing their nation means to them.

Despite Ukraine's exit, the connection between the players and the supporters remained strong.

It's taken us some time to come to terms with it but the group stages of Euro 2024 have come to an end and we've lost a third of the teams. We bid a sad farewell to the early leavers and look back at some of their best bits.

SERBIA

Serbia did not do much this tournament. They scored just 1 goal in their three matches, and even though it was a 90+5 minute equaliser, it was not enough to really make us excited for the team.

(Yeah, we don't know what goalkeeper Jan Oblak was doing here either 😬)

Yes, Serbia's group wasn't the easiest (on paper) but we expected so much more from a squad boasting Dušan Vlahović, Aleksandar Mitrović, Dušan Tadić etc.

Perhaps the most interesting thing they did all tournament was threaten to leave the Euros if Albania and Croatia weren't punished for the joint anti-Serbian chanting by their fans when the two sides met. Leaving the politics to one side, we can only assume Serbia were ultimately unhappy with UEFA's response and were determined to follow through with their threat, hence the poor results 🤔.

Not even a special pre-match visit from tennis superstar and fellow countryman Novak Djokovic was enough to inspire them.

Overall, Serbia did not really bring anything to the Euros that we're gonna miss, unfortunately (well except Vlahović himself, of course) . Maybe next time?

SCOTLAND- No Scotland, no party!

Oh Scotland you certainly brought the good vibes to Germany, unfortunately that was about it (we joke 😉). Scotland's tournament was far from ideal, they played the opening match and received a 5-1 thrashing from hosts Germany. Things were looking up after securing a 1-1 draw against Switzerland. Heartbreak came in their last match in the form of a last minute goal scored by Hungary which saw them end bottom of group A and, like Croatia, without being able to celebrate a win this summer. But let's not dwell on the bad stuff.

It's taken us some time to come to terms with it but the group stages of Euro 2024 have come to an end and we've lost a third of the teams. We bid a sad farewell to the early leavers and look back at some of their best bits.

POLAND

Given that Poland only made it to these Euros through a play-off after finishing third behind fellow early exit-ers Albania and Czechia in their qualifying group, we guess we can't be too surprised that they've failed to make the knockout stages.

We do sympathise with Poland though; finding themselves drawn in one of the toughest groups containing Austria, France and Netherlands, their task was made even harder when their captain, star striker and all-time record goal scorer Robert Lewandowski was ruled out of the opening fixture against Austria.

Poland did put up a strong fight however and, unlike almost all the other departing teams, managed to score in each of their games. But it was not enough and on matchday 2, they became they first team to be eliminated from Euro 2024.

What will we miss most about Poland? Well it'll probably be the players. Goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has already confirmed his international retirement and at 35 years old, this is also very likely to have been Lewandowski's last appearance at a European Championships 😞.

Oh no! Lewandowski has his potentially game tying penalty saved!

Not so fast, Maignan was off his line prematurely. Lewa slots home the retake to extend his record for his country to 83 goals.

It's taken us some time to come to terms with it but the group stages of Euro 2024 have come to an end and we've lost a third of the teams. We bid a sad farewell to the early leavers and look back at some of their best bits.

Czechia

While Czechia may not have expected to finish top of a group that contained the heavily stacked Portugal, they would have probably fancied their chances to go through to the knockout stages ahead of Türkiye and Georgia. Instead they finished bottom of Group F earning a solitary point.

They may not have the biggest names but for a squad boasting Bundesliga winner and Bayer Leverkusen forward Patrick Schick as well as West Ham duo Tomas Souček and Vladmir Coufal, it's a bit of an underachievement.

Their games were mostly competitive but their fate was pretty much sealed when Antonin Barák was sent off after just 20 minutes in their final group game against Türkiye. Despite their best efforts to get something from the match, which saw Souček equalising after Çalhanoğlu had given Türkiye the lead just after half-time, the man disadvantage proved fatal with Cenk Tosun scoring a 90+4 minute winner for the opposition.

What ensued at the final whistle lead to this game being statistically one of the dirtiest in Euros history with 16 yellow cards and two reds. Probably Czechia’s stand out contribution to Euro 2024.

Croatia- end of a golden era?

The surprise early exit in our opinion, while their path to the round of 16 was going to be difficult- despite Spain a powerhouse of talent and Italy the defending European champions also being part of group B, most assumed Croatia would somehow find a way. After all they were runners up in the 2018 World Cup and finished third in Qatar less than two years ago. Their start was abysmal, a 3-0 defeat to Spain seemed to shell shock the players (and us!). Their second match, a draw against Albania seemed to pose more questions than answers. Their last match, also a draw against Italy, sealed their fate and Croatia walked away from the tournament without being able to celebrate a win. Sadly it was not meant to be for Croatia, so does this mean their golden era has come to an end? Only time will tell.

Our favourite moment- Luka Modric scoring a goal almost immediately after missing a penalty. Poetic

*this goal also makes him the official oldest goal scorer in Euros history ( Although both Ronaldo and Pepe could still snatch that title away this tournament)
