Matcha latte
Is there such a thing as spoiled matcha? Cause I’m pretty sure this is it. It’s not the milk, or the way it was prepared. It just tastes off, like bitter tea mixed with spoiled fish. It was bad truly bad and it just did not get better as I drank more of it. Which I did cause spoiled or not I’m not letting matcha go to waste.
Rating: The Worst.
Think Coffee - 6TH AVE AND 16TH ST
Matcha latte with almond milk
There’s a sweetness level that’s really nice, not too sweet but mellow. It is however a tad bit too milky. The matcha is smooth but somewhat weak, probably due to the milk.
Rating: A cat that licks your hand after biting it.
Nohohon - ST MARKS
Tokyo Fog (Matcha latte with vanilla and almond milk)
There’s a nice matcha taste that manages to shine through the excessively sweet and syrupy taste that’s front and center.
Rating: That feeling of having peanut butter stuck on the roof of your mouth.
Grounded - JADE ST
Matcha green tea latte
This cafe is incredibly cute, cramped sure, but a great place to either work or hang out with a friend. That however has absolutely no bearing on the quality of the matcha latte which is quite gritty with an unnecessarily frothy milk.
Rating: Something something matcha latte something something.
Cafe Grumpy - MOTT ST AND KENMARE ST
Matcha latte
For some reason, I didn’t have particularly high hopes, but it was unexpectedly good. It was smooth and tasteful and an excellent balance of milk and tea.
Rating: Honestly it’s just good.
Doughnut Plant - GRAND ST AND ESSEX ST
Matcha latte with oat milk
While it is somewhat too sweet - I assume because of the oat milk - I can definitely taste the matcha. It is quite smooth and very enjoyable.
Rating: A good, heartfelt toight.
Perpetuum - 25TH AND 6TH

Disappointingly gritty and watery. Not well mixed unfortunately. For some reason I always have higher expectations when drinking out of a glass cup. I will be back though, it’s a cute cafe with good service
Rating: A cute cup with a large chip on the corner.
Le Café Coffee - 4TH AVE AND 14TH ST

Waaay way too much milk. To be fair, oat milk is very overpowering. I assume the matcha is smooth cause I didn’t see any particular lumps at the bottom but I could barely taste it honestly.
Rating: Your friend’s medical procedure goes great.
Maman - 25TH AND BROADWAY

Deathly hot, it’s been a while since I’ve had matcha this hot, the process usually does a good job of cooling the tea but this burned my tongue. I felt like it was more watery than milky, which, if the matcha has to be diluted I would prefer this. But despite all of this I thought it was overall nice and the macha was smooth.
Rating: A fancy bag with a hole at the bottom of it.
Fat Cat Kitchen - 14TH ST AND 3RD AVE

Way too much milk. Is the matcha smooth? Well blended? No idea. Can definitely taste the matcha but the milk flavor is overpowering. I have had better matcha latte at Fat Cat before but this one was definitely not the ideal drink for someone who should probably remember that they have lactose sensitivity.
Rating: A bubble wrap with most of the bubbles already popped.

Iced matcha latte with almond milk and little ice
Welcome to the ice age, the hour of the summer heat and stickiness is upon us. This iced matcha was quite syrupy but still smooth. The matcha taste was quite bland and subtle but it is a nice enjoyable summer drink.
Rating: Ice cubes hitting your teeth while you take a sip.
Cha Cha Matcha - 27TH AND BROADWAY
Matcha cappuccino with almond milk
Cha Cha Matcha’s cutesy gimmick and expensive menu aside, their baristas and the efficient power drill whisk they use never disappoint me. I’m always left with a satisfying drink and a good smooth and flavorful matcha.
Rating: A butterfly’s smooth flight.
Saltwater - 12TH AND 1ST AVENUE

I honestly have no idea what an Australian style cafe is but it’s here and we’re buying into it apparently. This latte was perfectly adequate, a little gritty and foamy but overall satisfying.
Rating: Traffic cones that stop you from falling into sidewalk cellars.
Caprices by Sophie - N 6TH STREET AND BEDFORD
Matcha latte
Very gritty and earthy. More of a matcha paste than a matcha drink. That being said I will always prefer drinking an incredibly strong and gritty matcha latte to a smooth syrupy milk foam. Also I always appreciate drinking from actual cups.
Rating: Tiny rain drops you can feel just on your hands.
Argo tea - BROADWAY AND 23RD

It’s always heart breaking when a tea doesn’t do anything to warm you up during a cold and rainy day. This tea was incredibly sweet and syrupy with the foam being the main character. A tiny hint of matcha-adjacent taste was all I could get.
Rating: Where’s my matcha?
MatchaBar - 15TH AND 8TH
Golden Latte (turmeric, matcha, ginger, black pepper, almond milk)
So. I hate both turmeric and ginger, so it’s pure masochism that made me order this. I can’t taste the matcha however, but I assume it’s what makes the turmeric bearable. The ginger burns my throat. I am in pain.
Rating: That feeling of weakness you get when it seems like you might be getting a cold.
Matcha Cafe Wabi - 4TH AND AVENUE B
SAKURA MATCHA LATTE
The best matcha place in New York, currently uncontested. Their specials are amazing and they manage an incredibly successful experimentation level with the taste. The fall special of Pumpkin Matcha Latte is still my favorite thing on earth and I miss it very much. However the Sakura was also perfect. Very creamy and a slight sweet flowery taste that compliments the smooth as fuck matcha so well. Store if very small however, with only a bank to sit on.
Rating: Walking under cherry blossoms trees a day after peak bloom.
