“You can’t show up and be more attractive than someone I’m flirting with. You’re a terrible wingman.”

“Whoops. Sorry,” Matheus said unapologetically with an exaggerated shrug, touching where she had shoved him and muttering out a soft ow. “But I mean, to be fair, I’m always more attractive than everyone you flirt with. Guess I’m gonna have to be a lot more sly about it next time...”

Just leaning against the wall took effort now. Dalia managed to find a quiet, empty back hallway in the arena and she allowed herself to rest against the wall, her torso pitched forwards and her hands on her knees. She shook now with the effort to stay upright. The two vials of blood she had on her–one a vampire, the other a shapeshifter–had long since turned to black sludge and her own magic now threatened to eat her alive as she tried to help people. She needed a break, but exhaustion made the cold seep into her bones so much easier, and now everywhere felt frigid no matter where she moved. On top of all this, the crowded space meant the sigils on her spine constantly burned, alerting her to the thousands of people near her deaf side. 

“I’m fine,” she called, the sigil burning again as it alerted her to someone’s presence in the hallway with her.

Matheus walked his way down the hallway, looking for people that needed help beyond the norm. Having grown used to harsh winters as a vampire, the cold hardly bothered him but it was slowly beginning to seep into his bones. The feeling bothered him due to its unfamiliarity. New York was cold -- he knew that, but this was highly peculiar and couldn’t be attributed to the usual weather patterns. He leaned against the wall, curiosity piqued by the nearby witch hiding from the rest of the public. His veins were singing at the magic that bounced off her, the man sucking in a sharp breath. “I wasn’t going to ask how you’re doing.  Not a fan of all the people out there?”

“Why couldn’t it have been a heatwave or something instead of this bloody snow?” Adella muttered to herself as she sat with her hot chocolate in one hand and cigarette in the other, “As if all being clustered here isn’t a recipe for disaster”. Of course she was one of the ones behind the last one but no one really knew that.

Having lived through some harsh winters in his four hundred something years of living, Matheus knew cold. He loved it simply for the possibilities of the snow-related activities, but this was... peculiar. Snow was falling way too fast and he hated that he couldn’t admire the beauty of it. So, suffice to say, he was a little miffed. “I love me snow, like, I’d dive in there and make snow angels and ski and snowboard and all of that good shit. But this, what the fuck? This is getting beyond ridiculous.”

“I guess it’s a good thing I stuffed my pockets and bag with all the candy bars.. right?” Calypso revealed, already having made children happy with them. Now it was a debate whether or not she should save them for later in case anyone needed them, or distribute them already. “It was an emotional buy, okay? All things considered, probably a good thing I did.” 

Matheus adjusted the black beanie on his head, ensuring it was low enough to cover his ears. The cold was merely a mild discomfort, but appearances mattered. “That’s me with pasta. Except you can’t put pasta in your pockets, but y’know. ..”

I had to help out with pre-Christmas drunks and one of them vomited in my car.  And I swear when you think it couldn’t get any worse they forgot to put parmesan cheese on my spaghetti. I’m in the need of vacation.” 

“Poor you,” Matheus said with amusement laced on his features, gently patting her shoulder. “How are you going to live without your parmesan cheese, huh?” Not that he could fully understand, of course, but he was purposefully being a little shit to her. “I recommend Italy ‘cos, girl, you need to eat legit Italian food for once in your life.”

“Babe,” Matheus rasped out, body remaining in place. “I’m the easy one. Always have been,” he said with a half smirk. “I just go with whatever people want. The kinkier, the better.” Eyes darted between lips and her green hues. “So, what do you want for breakfast?”

“Whoever taught you that was completely wrong unless you were trying to tell me that I look like a badly-groomed merino sheep.” The redhead replied to the seemingly buzzed man as she crossed her arms and shook her head. She understood that he was trying to impress her by showing her that he knew her language, but clearly whoever taught him told him that a weird insult was actually a compliment. “Would you mind leaving me and my friend here alone?” She asked as she grabbed the nearest person near her. Her jade colored eyes looking over at them almost pleading to not be left alone with the man.

One steely look from Matheus was enough to send the man scattering away. Once the stranger disappeared from view, he leaned in and let out a chortle. “A badly groomed merino sheep? Oh God, that’s hilarious,” he said with amusement laced in his tone. “Bet it was a woman that told him that.”

Some vampires had that kind of relationship with their sires. That kind, the sexual kind, the romantic kind. Lucky bastards to have somebody they cared for that much with them in their new life. He trusted Matheus’ judgement regardless of if he was seeing his sire or not. But he was still curious. His friend hadn’t been lying when he said he was a nosy bastard. “Are you trying to pimp out your sire to me? Because while I assure you, I am quite lonely, I am not that desperate, and as much as I love you, that’s a little too close, man.” It was a joke. Maybe. The loneliness wasn’t, not so much.

“You’re a prude? I can hardly believe it,” Matheus said bemusedly with furrowed eyebrows, letting out a chortle afterwards. Always poking fun even in the middle of a serious discussion. “Warren, my speedo brother in arms, light of my life, the beauty is that I don’t give a flying monkey’s ass.” Loudly patting his friend’s shoulder for good measure, he nudged him in once again. Personal space wasn’t really much of a thing for people he was close with. “I’m saying. You’re gorgeous, she’s gorgeous, I’m gorgeous, it’s a party. A party where a lot of making out is involved.” Giving Warren’s shoulder a light squeeze, he pressed a kiss to his friend’s forehead, never shying away from affection regardless of gender. “I know it’s not the same or whatever, but you always got me, man.”
