How’s the cop life treating you, read anyone the Miranda Rights yet?
That’s...really sad.

In recent memory, probably. Didn’t think that would shock anyone by now.
Yeah, no, Christmas and New Year’s typically is that time of year to go out and murder. Don’t know why I was so shocked.
There were no murders to cover up this holiday season, so I’d definitely consider it a good one for the Mikaelson family.
...is that, like, a first for your family?Â

REBEKAH: Yeah, something like that.
MATT: See you at The Grill. 7?
TEXT✉MABEKAH
REBEKAH: I'm sure, you've handled much more than I ever would have given you credit for.
MATT: You mean 'cause I'm pretty much the only human out of my close friends?
TEXT✉MABEKAH
REBEKAH: Oh yeah? You should know by now that I don't play fair.
MATT: I can handle it.
TEXT✉MABEKAH
REBEKAH: I'm just checking! You guys might have been throwing one of those town wide excuses for a festival or something with ridiculous attire included.
REBEKAH: That sounds perfect though.
MATT: Not as far as I know.
MATT: You won't be saying that when I kick your ass at pool.
TEXT✉MABEKAH
REBEKAH: Alright, then I'll see you soon.
REBEKAH: Should I be like...prepared for anything?
MATT: See you soon.
MATT: Prepared for anything? It's Mystic Falls, you're about the most exciting thing that's happened here so I'm just kinda working with what I've got.
MATT: Which, by the way, is drinks and a few games of pool at The Grill.
TEXT✉MABEKAH
REBBEKAH: Only if you don't ask me again if I'm sure.
MATT: Deal.
TEXT✉MABEKAH
REBEKAH: I don't even know what I would call home at this point. Really, I can be there.
MATT: You sure?
TEXT✉MABEKAH
REBEKAH: I'm not in town at the moment but depending on what Saturday entails, I can be.
MATT: I can save it for another Saturday. One when you're a little closer to home.
TEXT✉MABEKAH
MATT: So, what are the odds that you're still actually in town and free this Saturday?
IF YOU EVER COME BACK → MABEKAH
Rebekah shook her head before thinking better of it, wondering if this really was the smartest thing to do on one of her first few days in Mystic Falls. Sure it might have been the main reason she was there, but part of her was hesitant to let Matt be brought back into her world. God knows it was dangerous enough for vampires and werewolves when they were always at each others’ throats. Despite the fact that he seemed more durable, more able to take care of himself now that he was almost wearing a badge the blonde still cared about him too much to risk him coming into any kind of harm.
“Not really, there’s only one person in particular I was really hoping to see,” Rebekah replied, shooting him a pointed look. It was the truth and she had no problem admitting that, at least. She was only a little curious as to what her brothers needed her for, knowing it more than likely wasn’t worth leaving Matt for. But on the other hand she really did need to figure out where she was going to stay while she was there, having just crashed in a shady hotel room for the past few nights. Besides, giving in so early would ruin half the fun, right? Although up to now she had made her point more than perfectly clear.
“I don’t want to keep you from your boys though,” she added, wiggling a few fingers in the direction of the guys who kept glancing over at the pair of them. Pulling out her wallet she threw a few bills down on the bar, not bothering to count them as she put them under her empty bottle. “I assume you still have the same number?” Rebekah asked, biting down on her lip for a moment as she held her phone in her hand. “I do, at least, so don’t be a stranger.” She stood up, hitching her bag on her shoulder as she did so but lingered for just a moment longer.
Though she didn’t say it was obvious that Rebekah was referring to him in being the only person here she was hoping to see. Strangely, Matt found it meaning a whole lot more to him than he ever could have expected. A lot of people in his life had just left and considering Rebekah’s history, he never expected her to even step foot in Mystic Falls again, let alone returning with the hopes of bumping into him again while she was there. After all, he was just a human — a person who would be around for nothing more than a blink of her eternal life.
Glancing over his shoulder in the direction of which her fingers moved, Matt found his peers quickly looking away; clearly having been spying over his exchange with the beautiful blonde girl in front of him. Smiling to himself, he shook his head for a moment before focusing back on Rebekah — who had already placed a few bills down on the bar, looking as though she was ready to leave.
At her question, Matt’s eyes shifted down to the phone in her hand before he nodded his head. “Same number. Lemme know when you’re not busy doing...whatever it is you’re doing,” he smirked, getting to his feet as she did and catching that look in her eye. “I’ll see you again before you move onto the next place, alright?” With that, he wrapped an arm around he waist and pulled her into a gentle hug, figuring that after everything they’d been through Rebekah deserved more than a wave goodbye.

Rebekah bit down on her lip to suppress a grin, although at Matt’s response she knew she was failing. But judging by the look on his face she wasn’t the only one and she simply shook her head a little, running a hand through her hair. “Sly, yeah, that’s never been my strong suit either,” she added, too curious to hear his answer to take offense to the statement, which was all too true anyway.Â
At his answer the blonde nodded her head a few times, again unable to keep the smile from crossing her face. It felt good to be more concerned with things like relationship status and what she was going to do for the rest of the night as opposed to trying to figure out who was targeting her family next. Easier, the way things had been with Matt before she had disappeared. Opening her mouth to reply she was about to protest before realizing her main requirement was that they didn’t call whatever the two of them had been doing a relationship, instead finding herself leaning just a little closer to him.
“So we’re both on the same page, good to know,” Rebekah stated, glancing down at her phone as it vibrated on the bar next to her with her eyebrows pulled together. Sighing a little she swiped over it to read the text, debating whether Elijah was being overdramatic as usual or if he really needed her advice for once. Whatever it was, it could wait. Her eyes flickered back up to Matt, a small grin still on her lips.Â
Shaking his head with a small smile set on his lips as Rebekah claimed that sly wasn’t really her style either. Matt decided to bite his tongue and leave that subject untouched — at least for right now. Instead he focused on the present because they already had their past and with Rebekah you never really knew where she was heading in the future, so for right now they kind of had the perfect situation going on.
The blonde leaning in closer to him wasn’t missed by Matt but he was hardly complaining about it. It was something he found himself rather enjoying. Eyes set on hers as Rebekah continued to speak, he opened his mouth to respond but was cut off by the sound of her phone buzzing against the bar. He watched for her reaction, unable to hide the smile on his face when she dismissed whatever it was to focus on him.
“I’m not keeping you from anything, am I?” His tone was playful and in spite of the serious expression he tried to maintain, a teasing smile began to break through. It began to feel as if there was some kind of invisible magnet pulling Matt towards Rebekah but he had zero intentions of fighting it off. “You got places to go, people to see?”Â
IF YOU EVER COME BACK → MABEKAH
“You humans and your responsibilities,” Rebekah drawled out, shaking her head just a little as her lips quirked up. Although she had known that would be the case she couldn’t help but feel a little disappointed, even if the reality was that escaping off to Europe now that she knew what was happening with the rest of the Mikaelson clan was probably just a dream. Imagining that her brother was going to be a father was too weird to even put into words, but the blonde couldn’t deny that the idea of being an aunt held more than a little appeal to her.
Taking another swig of her drink Rebekah leaned one elbow against the bar, better able to face Matt directly that way. “Is that your sly way of asking if I’m single?” she asked, a light laugh leaving her lips. “Nobody that I would call boyfriend, no.” This would require an entirely separate conversation if he was actually serious about visiting New Orleans at some point, but she figured it was better to just ignore that all together for the moment. No one that could compete with you she thought, surprising herself at how true it felt.Â
“As long as you don’t decide to bring your girlfriend with you, either.” Obviously Rebekah had noticed the way other women in the bar looked at him; some combination of the fact that he had always been attractive and now had the whole cop thing going as well definitely working in his favor. Her hand tightened on the bottle she was holding just a little bit, stopping herself from doing something, anything, that would let them know he was hers.
A fond chuckle escaped his lips at her typical Rebekah response and he couldn’t deny that he’d surprisingly missed these little pieces and parts of her that he’d once disapproved of. She was so painfully blunt and impatient sometimes that it came across as incredibly rude but the more time Matt took to get to know here, the more humorous he found it. If she hadn’t changed her ways by now, he highly doubted that she ever would.Â
Raising his eyebrows and laughing shyly as he was kind of caught out in his actions, Matt scrambled around for his words; holding his hands up innocently. “I...you know me, I’m not a sly kinda guy.” He continued to chuckle, settling down as she gave him an answer that didn’t suck. Pressing his lips together, he gave a small nod of his head to let her know that he’d heard her and tried to keep his smile from growing too big.Â
Hearing her question just as he reached for his drink, Matt narrowed his eyes towards her as an amused smirk took over his features. “Is this your sly way of asking me if I’m single?” He teased, taking a swig before he set the bottle down once more. “But to answer it: no, no girlfriend. Pretty sure my last serious girlfriend was Caroline, so...hell no.”Â
IF YOU EVER COME BACK → MABEKAH
Rebekah let out a light chuckle at his words, knowing it must have been quite the situation to be considered extraordinary in a place like Mystic Falls. In a way she wished for a time that was more…ordinary, for lack of a better word. Not that she had had ever experienced anything even remotely close to that, or at least, not in a time she could remember. It was part of the reason why she had become so invested in Hayley and Klaus’s baby, feeling like this might be the only opportunity she would get to have something that resembled a normal family experience.
“You can say that again,” she replied to Matt’s statement, a smile playing across her lips. Sure some things had changed over the centuries, but there were still too many consistencies that stayed the same. Like Rebekah always falling for the wrong guy…but with Matt back in front of her it was hard to think straight about that. Her words were still true as he spoke about their time abroad, glad to hear that he still felt the same way about it. Given the chance she would go back to that in a heartbeat, even though some things had definitely changed since then.
“True, but say the word and we can do it again,” Rebekah told him slyly, shrugging one of her shoulders as she took another drink. She doubted something like police training would afford a lot of time off, but she figured it couldn’t hurt to remind him that the offer still stood. “And if all else fails, you should definitely come to New Orleans. Then I can really show you a good time in my old stomping grounds.”
A bashful smile touched upon his features as the blonde reminded him that the offer to return to Europe still stood. It was nice to know that Rebekah hadn’t just left and forgotten about him, even though that had kind of been their agreement once it was settled that she and her family would be moving to New Orleans. No contact, no missing each other, nothing. She might have been used to uprooting her life and starting fresh but this was the only life Matt would have, so he found the task a little difficult.
“As much fun as that sounds, I doubt the academy will be all that happy about me skipping out for a few weeks to live it up in Europe again. Thanks, though.” Matt smirked, running a hand through his hair. “New Orleans could be a possibility, though. Can’t say that I’m not intrigued.”Â
New Orleans was just another location to add to the very long list of places he’d never been and although he couldn’t exactly take a long period of time off right now, New Orleans was definitely more of a possibility than anywhere in Europe. “Just as long as one of your boyfriends doesn’t try to snap my neck while I’m checking out the French Quarter.”
