Alas, things are a bit complicated on both sides… --------- “I really wanted to apologise for the confusion,” Sirius muttered. He couldn't stop staring at the man and the way his eyes half-closed every time he took another bite of the pastry, only to open again to reveal the two coloured eyes, the dark and the amber. One seemed to reflect hunger. The other sparkled with mischief. Sirius tried to regain his ability to carry on a civilised conversation: “And I, uh…” Great, now he was stuttering. “I also wanted to know more about what you do?” "Is that so?" The man looked at him with a questioning look, waiting for him to continue. Truly, Sirius didn't really want to pursue it. But the man's glaze was open and friendly, and he was waiting patiently for him to explain further, so he sighed and added, “I do have one tattoo I'd rather not have anymore, but I can't remove it.” He looked down at the floor before adding in a whisper, "I hate it."

A little snippet of a scene in Chapter 2 of my WIP I see you, very freshly posted on AO3 ;)

It could be a bit of a spoiler, so I put a hidding space for the most spoiling part...

(it's definitively a spoiler for Put a stain on me, as this is a sequel fic).

The phone barely rings at Remus's place.

It's not like he has anyone to call him. He mainly has a phone to make a call, if he needs to. Not to get calls.

Who would? His family is gone, his friends are long lost behind his years in prison and his years in hiding from the men that are still hunting him. He couldn't afford to reach out to his childhood friends. And anyway, who would want to still be his friend, after all that?

And as for the new connections he has made since re-establishing his life after prison, he is merely that: a connection. Nothing to spend a phone call on.

Nevertheless, the phone is currently ringing, and after a moment's hesitation, Remus finally goes to pick it up.

"John Howell," he says.

"Oh, hi, hello," a lady answers, hesitantly. "I was hoping I could speak with Remus Lupin, in fact."

Remus shivers. No one should know he lives here.

"I'm afraid it's a wrong number, Ma'am," he answers coldly.

He's about to hang up, but a little something retains his hand. Curiosity, or… something in the kind tone of voice of this elderly woman. He really can't imagine Crabbe and Goyle using an old person to check on him. If they'd found his number, they'd likely also have found his address, and they would already be here with a bullet for him, not a courtesy call.

In the meantime, the woman adds, "He told me you could be under this other name, but to insist nevertheless. So, pardon me if I'm being bold, but I'd really like to talk to you, young man. See, we know each other, kind of, and I owe you my life. I think it warrants a little bit of your time on the phone, doesn't it?"

Remus feels his blood get cold.

"But… How… Mrs… Mrs Pomfrey? Is that you?"

She chuckles lightly. "Well, I do hope you've only been tied to one arm-robbery and to saving the life of only one apothecary, so… Yes, that would be me."

"But… How did you get my phone number? I'm under hiding, under another name, that's… impossible that you would find me."

"Yes, your friend explained that to me. That you haven't even had your life back fully after doing your time in prison, you poor thing. I'm sorry for that, Dear, I've always thought that you didn't even deserve all these years being bars in the first place, after being so brave and turning over for me…"

"Wait, what?"

Remus is so lost, he doesn't even know what he's the most confused about, between this 'friend' of his she keeps mentioning, and the fact that she seems to feel sorry for him, after all the wrongs he's done to her.

"Sorry, I'm having difficulties catching up. Which friend are you talking about, if I may ask, Mrs Pomfrey?"

"Oh, a lovely young man, really! He came by yesterday. Well mannered, and very handsome, too."

Her voice seems a bit more distant from the phone, when she adds with a chuckle, "Isn't he, Minnie?"

I see you

Remus wakes up to the cold on his skin and a pounding headache. It takes him a bit of time to remember why he's on his couch, too. As conscience comes back to him, so does shame, for having imposed this level of intoxication on his body through uncontrolled drinking, the night before. Thankfully, the feeling quickly morphs into gratitude, excitement and hope, at the thought of Sirius having saved him from his down spiralling.

He hums softly to himself, remembering the quiet moments together, and those heated ones, and how good it has felt to finally kiss Sirius, have him in his arms, give him pleasure. How good it has felt to finally come clean to him. To share the truth, and to open up. He's still incredulous at Sirius's kind acceptance of his past. Amazed that he still wanted him, after he said it all out.

Just there, in the corner, lurks the little voice in his head. It's too good to be true. You don't deserve happiness. You're certainly not worthy of acceptance. Not after all the wrongs you've done.

The headache doesn't leave him alone. He stands up to get a glass of water and to find out where Sirius is.

That's when the creepy feeling carves its way inside of him, as he slowly steps toward the sink. Because now that he's fully awake, the house is eerily silent. It's obvious that there is only one heartbeat warming it up. His own heartbeat, getting louder and more painful as the realisation comes to him: Sirius is gone.

Sirius is gone. Of course. What else was he even hoping for? He has been incredibly kind, kind enough, to pull him out of the dumper and offer him a pity sex. Remus may have thought it was more, at the time. May have thought there was some kind of connection between them. But deep down, Remus has known from their first encounter that the man was way out of his league. A one-night stand is more than anything Remus could hope for, more than he has ever deserved.

Sirius is gone.

And yet.

There really were moments with a deeper meaning, weren't there? Was all this trustful soul sharing only one-sided?

While he struggles to make himself a tea, disheartened as he is, Remus plays back the events from the night before. He thinks he remembers most of it, starting with their arrival at his house, when his memories emerge from the alcohol haze. Those first hours together last night are still a bit blurry in his mind, but he remembers the soul-healing moment when he realized that Sirius cared for him. Or, at least, that's what he felt, back then.

He remembers that morning more clearly. Confessing having been gone for Sirius since their first encounter. The sweet endearment he has been using to call him, in his head, and out loud this morning. Shit, he really imposed his feelings on him, didn't he? No wonder Sirius got scared. Who wouldn't, when you hook up with a guy just to help him out, and he almost confesses his undying love for you, after only a handful of hours and an awkward (wonderful, magical) dry humping on a couch?

Of course, Sirius is gone.

If things keep on going well, it will be a Remus POV, starting just after Sirius left him...

I'm just getting into it (800 words so far!) so I'll be writing a bit more before I start publishing on ao3 and sharing here. Just to be a bit more certain of the way it will take...

Snippet:

When finally Remus calls him out of his troubled rest, the Earth floats, a singular blue bubble, in front of them. Sirius can't take his eyes out of it, glued to the ship's space-windshield.

"What do you think?" Remus says softly, grabbing his hand and holding it between his.

"It's… breathtaking…" Sirius murmurs reverently.

It moves something deep in him. Like an ancient memory. As if a thread had been linking him to this place, all his life. Home.

How can he feel so deeply nostalgic and homesick of a place where he's never been? Seeing Earth is heartbreaking, in a biter sweet way. Like finally finding what you've been yearning so much, after a long, long journey. Somehow, ironically, now he better understands the will of the Lord to bring back the Orionians to their original planet. Back home.

Remus kisses his knuckles softly, unaware of Sirius's dark thoughts. Unaware of Sirius's dark soul. And suddenly Sirius can't stand his tenderness anymore.

Pulling his hand away with a bit too much force, still staring at the Earth, his voice sounds ice cold even to his own ears when he asks: "Why did you bring me here, Remus?"

"Why wouldn't I?" Remus says, and Sirius hears the tranquil smile in his voice, even without looking at him. It's like fuel for his anger.

"Because I could be a spy, for all that you know!" Sirius bites back, almost shouting.

There is a pause, words suspended between them. And then: "Yes. You could," Remus answers, quietly. But the smile is gone. "You could." He pauses, looks at him with attention, but without surprise. "And, you could also be a fleeing refugee, someone in need of a shelter away from this nightmare of Orion84," he adds, and there is an intention in his words. Like they are heavy with meaning and careful thinking.

Sirius can't sleep. And it should be because of the crucial geostrategic implications for Orion84 of what he's just learned. Or it could be because of his naive fascination for other worlds, other beings. But really, the cause of his sleepless state is none of those. And Sirius can't put his finger on what it is - only that it seems related to Remus himself, for his mind keeps on shouting at him images of the man, leaving him in no peace to sleep. There is some kind of want in his core, and it can't be thirst, nor hunger, because they just had a proper break. And it's different but alike at the same time, because it feels like a physical need. Like an urgency in his body. As he turns again for a million times, Remus catches him in his arms. "Hey. What's the matter, Love? Can't find sleep?" "No, I can't!" Sirius answers, wincing at how whiny he sounds. "You usually fall asleep quite rapidly. Any idea what may be troubling you?" "No. I don't understand." Sirius sighs. "I'm exhausted but my body feels as if there was a rapid current speeding through it, relentlessly." "Uh." Remus pauses, thoughtful. "And are there any images coming to your mind, along this relentless current?" Remus inquires. Sirius blushes. Tries to avoid Remus's gaze - pointlessly, as he seems fully concentrated on his face and not about to look anywhere else. Reluctantly he finally murmurs: "You. Teaching, there. In the memory." "Yeah, what about it?" Remus seems as puzzled as he is. "That's the images that are imprinting my mind," Sirius mumbles, almost inaudibly. Remus's hearing must be excellent though, because there is a small smile growing on his face, and his eyes spark with joy and something else Sirius can't place. "I see," Remus says, knowingly. This is infuriating. How can he know what this urge is, when Sirius doesn't? "Well, would you mind sharing with the class what's wrong with me, then?" Sirius almost bites, frustration threatening to take him over. "Nothing's wrong with you, Sirius," Remus calmly states. "You're just horny, Love."

🪐 Chapter 5 is out!

Remus uses a cool futuristic tech device to share the experience of a full moon as a werewolf with Sirius.

Snipet (hence a bit of a spoiler for this chapter and the previous ones) below the cut!

It's exhilarating. The sensation of power and speed. The sweep of the wind on his muzzle, ruffling the thick fur on his back. His heart beating so fast. The million scents he encounters on his mad run across the forest. Sirius's senses are overwhelmed by so many new stimuli and he has to consciously breath and accept to take them in. But once he does… It's a firework of sensations buzzing delightfully all over his brain. As if he'd been starved and was finally faced with a banquet of an infinite variety of exquisite dishes and treats. And among all those thoughts, sensations and feelings that Sirius receives directly from Remus's brain - or rather the werewolf's brain - there is nothing like aggressiveness, hate or fury, as his orionian self would have expected, only days before. It's raw love, playfulness, joy of life and sense of belonging. After more playful time, yapping and running, the memories slowly end, fading away as a dream he'd wake up from. Sirius slowly returns to the sensations of his own body. The way it's relaxed on the soft mattress below him, in the tube. The way the pillow gently supports his neck. The soft humming of the ship's machines. The faint scent of Remus next to him, the reassuring magic he senses from him. The touch of a warm skin on his hand - Remus's hand tethering him to reality, bringing him back from Remus's own inner world. "How are you doing, Love?" Remus asks in a murmur. Sirius feels… He would say he feels both excited and… satiated? Before he can explain, Remus adds, an anxious tone in his voice: "Was it scary?" "No," Sirius firmly says. "It was beautiful."
