Fangirling in the Hiatus: The Seelie Court Kiss
Note: I want to thank everyone who voted in my little poll. Clace fangirl posts got the most votes so instead of doing on post I decided I would do a series of post featuring different scenes. The first obviously being the seelie court scene.
As many of you know I love the books & the show but I’ll admit I was a little nervous going into this episode. I had become very frustrated with the show & how oblivious Clary seemed to be about her own feeling. However this scene was a turning point for me as it was for Clary & Jace.
We start off the scene with Clary pacing & worrying about what the Seelie Queen could want with Simon but Jace throws out the line “If I were him I’d never leave you side either.” Clary suddenly stops pacing to look for at Jace. The air in the scene completely changes after that moment. Clary is completely floored by Jace’s statement. No matter if Clary was pretending not to know of Jace’s feelings or just genuinely did not realize at that point their was no turning back because Jace had never before made such a blatant statement. Makes you wonder what could have happened if Simon had not come running in at that exact moment.
So the Queen comes in saying that Jace & Simon killed some of her kind & there must be payment. From the moment she says “the kiss that will set them free is the kiss you most desire.” Clary is concerned. Its written all over her face. Kat McNamara did such an outstanding job in these moments. Considering Simon & Jace were both about to be strangled she would have happily looked at Queen & kissed Simon but their was something underneath. She slowly approached Simon & only when Simon prompted her to. Its almost as if she knew the kiss wouldn’t work…..at least subconsciously. Of course when that becomes a reality she cannot pretend anymore & that truth echos through the Queens words “You can fool yourself….”
These words lead to Clary going up to Jace & saying “This means nothing” & he nods before she kisses him. I think the nod is so important because we as viewers know that Jace despite his denial at the beginning of the episode to Sebastian that Jace does indeed still have feelings for Clary. So for him this is going to mean everything but in that moment he’s pretty much acknowledging the idea that this will mean nothing for her but that completely changes as the kiss begins. I love the way the kiss was shot. You can visibly see they share one soft kiss (much like the kiss Clary shared right before with Simon) but Clary’s feeling take control as she pulls him in again. Its a beautiful moment that they both get lost in & lasts way too long to claim that it meant nothing.
Clary has to forcibly push Jace away to stop herself & both of them are left breathless & speechless. I love those final moments of them staring at each other in awe of what they had just experienced together. Clary even gives an quick almost omg smile before turning to see how much pain she just caused Simon but still she can’t help but look back at Jace knowing that whatever shell of obliviousness she can built around herself & her relationship with Simon had been completely shattered.
