Howdahs are the large metal or wooden saddles used by many elephant owners. They often come adorned with decorative and regal looking covers reminiscent of the days of the Maharaja’s but are they necessary and what are they hiding?!

Howdahs are very bad for the long term health of elephants as they are proven to cause many injuries such as;

Pressure Wounds Spinal Damage Belly Abscesses Rope Sores Internal Injuries Dehydration and Starvation

They will ultimately take years off an animal’s life. Howdahs even cause difficulty in drinking, eating and simple moving or breathing, because of the tight fitting harness, similar to a person wearing a tight corset.

Howdahs are often poorly constructed and the elephants are overloaded and worked for long periods of time, this leads to the frame rubbing their backs, causing blisters, abscesses and open wounds that can become infected.

Riding bareback or with a slightly padded blanket is an obvious, cheap solution to the Howdah issue. Combined with limiting the number of riders at any one time, this will eliminate many of the injuries that elephants working in the tourist industry suffer each year. Simple alternatives such as these will lead to the animal suffering less stress and having a longer, happier life.

Hi California (and West Coast) Friends. There is a girl who has run away from her home in the suburbs of LA, which is near me. I have heard of this from some friends and the news. I just reblogged a post about missing persons and have been enlightened as to the concerns that people may have about abusive relatives and whatnot. From what I gather and accounts of those close to her, this seems to be a purely stress related incident. The pressure that comes with being a high-achieving student is often immense and this speaks for her mental health, and though it is possible that her family puts pressure on her, self-pressure and high expectations are just as dangerous. I don’t want this to be a blame game or turn into some joke about the education-driven stereotypes that exist around Asians. I want to help get a girl with no money, no phone, and no contacts home, safe, where she can get the help she deserves. I am sure her family will be grateful. Thanks.

Anxiety attacks aren’t always hyperventilating and rocking back and forth

Anxiety attacks can take different forms, such as:

Unpredictable bouts of rage or irritability

Nit-pickiness (obsessive behavior, which may be a part of OCD), and even a hypersensitivity to disarray, chaos, or any sort of change

Fast-talking, stuttering, stumbling over words

Not talking at all

Sitting rigid, staring into space, almost seeming “zoned out”

Understanding the way our or other’s anxiety works can help to decrease the stigma and help to calm a person faster and get them out of that state. These are just a few, but it gives an idea of the range in which attacks can come.
