DESCRIPTION
In the early 50’s Cleveland DJ Alan Freed coined the term Rock and Roll for his radio show “The Moondog Rock and Roll Radio Hour.” Such a cool and revolutionary term coming from a state like Ohio had potential to finally put Ohio on the map culturally. It would make a whole lot of sense to assume a town with such a pin point in the beginning of a musical revolution, creator of term bigger than music just but actually synonymous with cool, would have at the least a really great respect to the history of the term. But by 1972 the electric eels had already begun fucking that up big time, they would spark a recidivist approach of taking cheap jabs at what people like the Ohio based Rock and Roll Hall of Fame would consider great rock and roll music. Even in the modern day there is bands in this state whom try their hardest to make their guitars sound as horrible as possible and look far and wide for the most annoying singer. Ohio is home to lots of things far less exciting than rock and roll, for instance, Wendys, 8 presidents, and even fucking traffic lights. It’s undoubtably quite the strange mixture as far as cultural exports go and such a concoction seemed to birth some sort of urge for making interesting and unusual sounding musical endeavors. But in the year 2015 the thick coffee table books and documentary interviews often will shy from this cow loving state. Sure it’s got a handful of bands that end up cool enough to be ‘respected’ but you would never know that vast amount of bands and scenes that just made really amazing punk and outsider music that have existed in this state with out some real digging. So with the seventh installment of CRETINS OF DISTORTION the aim is to cover this states historical place in ugly and strange music. We live in a world where importance is no longer measured by how something makes you feel but by how many internet dollars something is capable of gathering and how cool the kids are wearing the bootleg shirts of it. CRETINS OF DISTORTION says FUCK THAT. In this issue CRETINS OF DISTORTION tries to take an unpretentious approach at exploring the ignored as the fanzine dives deep into it’s home state, OHIO. Short palatable blurbs are made for over 80 bands from the early 70’s to late 80’s with the goal of taking bands that give you that exciting feeling and making them more available and recognized to current and future generations. History is important, especially a history of something many readers call their own, but the encyclopedic and text book like manor so many people discuss classic punk is a drag. Because of that, importance was felt in discussing this history littered with 'fuck yeahs’ and spelling errors. There is also a sizable review section for current Ohio releases proving the magic is far from gone contrary, to the current beliefs. This issue also contains interviews with Robert Griffin (SPIKE IN VAIN, OUTERWEAR, THE DARK, PRISONSHAKE), Ron House (THE TWISTED SHOUTS, GREAT PLAINS, THOMAS JEFFERSON SLAVE APARTMENTS) with Mike Rep (MIKE REP AND THE QUOTAS, TRUE BELIEVERS, THE TWISTED SHOUTS, GREAT PLAINS), and Tim Anstaett (THE OFFENSE FANZINE). The fanzine itself has 11" x 17" photocopied pages stapled down the side. The covers are pink and hand stamped and the content takes up 12 pages!!!!
