Week 4

What did I DO in class?

Group activity using an empathy mapping canvas to try and really step into the shoes of our supplied persona, Su.

What did I find the most interesting? The dilemma around AI-generated models and how they are based on floored data sets and feedback loops. The synthetic data produced often exacerbate pre-existing Representational harms.

What specifically is interesting to me about it?

How AI image generators and AI models are built and trained. This led to a very interesting and philosophical problem where AI training itself with a GAN model can never truly have a neutral dataset. In fact, these models are based on pre-existing representational harms of human data sets; but since AI will put these images out into the world the model becomes further flawed and creates a harmful feedback loop of its own synthetic data.

Describe the part of class that is most relevant to my life or studies Empathy mapping: understanding and working with design methods is a primary driver for me. Understanding how to best use these design tools is fundamental to feeling confident in tackling design challenges.

What question or questions do I want to ask now about somethinig in the session? How might I find the answer?

If I have been applying my methods correctly to my Task 1 assignment.

What topic am I going to follow up on in some way and how will I do it? I will send a draft of my current progress on Task 1 later this week to gather feedback from Tracey and or Saara

Week 3

What did I DO in class?

We were introduced to the concept of wicked problems, high stake problems.

In-class group activity tackling a potentially wicked problem in a group of 4. Working with Ty, Joel, and Aemon we brainstormed a potential product/service to tackle Obesity. We settled on an app idea that could utilize AI in various ways to help with meal plans (a picture of fridge contents can identify ingredients and give meal plans), AI in decoding food labels, working with large ORGS to promote QR codes on grocery dockets, etc. The app would also use a double-pronged approach to track users mental health, habits and exercise. Inclusive design for anyone who wants to get healthier.

What did I find the most interesting? The concept of wicked problems and the stakes that come from them.

What specifically is interesting to me about it? Pulling a thread on one issue is likely to expose many systemic issues involved and mixed up in the original problem. Brainstorming a potential solution to a wicked problem in a group is interesting to gain differing perspectives on the issues, and potential solutions.

Describe the part of class that is most relevant to my life or studies Revisiting the concept of how different design methodologies are used to ideate and problem-solve.

What question or questions do I want to ask now about somethinig in the session? How might I find the answer? APA referencing website, asking lecturer or Student Services.

What topic am I going to follow up on in some way and how will I do it? Best practice of collating work as I work through design methodologies for my first assessment.

Task1 - Brainstorming

Topic/Problem

Bees - We don't need bees format: poster campaign? Problem: Shining a light on climate change following the loneliness of a bee finding a home. Would be almost children book esque illustrations which follow a tongue-in-cheek campaign on why we don't need bees and the socio impact and consequences of losing animals in the ecosystem. Greyhounds - Catching the rabbit format: zine or poster Problem: Many ex-racing greyhounds struggle to be rehomed. This is due to misconceptions that they are very energetic and require a lot of work. This campaign would seek to dispel that myth as many greyhounds are quite and actually rather lazy and friendly, perfect for many people who would overlook these animals. Where do I really live? format: unknown

Problem: This draws on my own ignorance of Aboriginal culture, particularly from schooling. This would be a campaign to get people interested in Aborginal history, culture and artwork to really inspire connections and a want to learn. Gambling format: templated website As gambling becomes more prevalent through poker machines, sports bet applications. It would be fun to devise a campaign that gamified gambling help without the stigma of many current campaigns.

DES105

What did I DO in class? Went over learning introduction to DES105. learnt how we will keep notes by using journals for review. Completed a designer sentence on what currently fits me (I think will change as I progress) Found a space and began to write down everything I could observe as a way of breaking down my environment.

What did I find most interesting? Breaking down my environment and expressing it in written form.

What specifically is interesting to me about it? I typically try to draw my environment. Describing my environment in word form was a different experience and approach I had not thought of or experimented with. A new way to observe the world.

Describe the part of class that is most relevant to my life or studies. Exploring different design methodologies will greatly help structure an approach to finding a solutions. In the past this has felt like a shot in the dark, rather than tested and defined problems.

Design process and principles. IDEO - Human centered design which is relatively new concept in the field of design. Inspiration - Ideation - Implementation. Double Diamond - Tried and tested methodology, widely used methodology for identifying a problem and developing a solution fast. Used largely in government and large private sectors. Design thinking bootleg - Cards created by instructors students, and designers from around the world. You can use them in any order and combination; This can help curate design thinking and use the deck for inspiration, problem-solving or idea generation.
