I am both.
how much exactly do you pay for food each month?
Rice: ~12€
Lentils: ~10€
Chick peas: ~7€
Potatoes: 4€
Onions: 3€
Various vegetables: 10-20€
Various other things (sugar, coffee, tomato sauce, sweets): ~20€
Spices: ~15€
B12 supplements: 8€
Total: ~89-99€
Average price of a meal: ~3.30€
Am I low income enough for you?
ye but i dont see how i will build up muscle mass with a diet like this, i burn through a kg of potatoes in a week alone and rice/lentils won’t cut it. that diet might work for me if i wasn’t doing sport, i give you that.
Whichever way you spin this, chickpeas and lentils represent significantly cheaper sources of protein than any meat, if you want to measure amount of protein with cost per pound. Look at the amount of protein in a cup of lentils compared to a cup of beef or chicken, then compare the price - it isn’t even close. There are athletes at the very top of their sporting fields who have adopted a plant-based diet, including bodybuilders, professional weight-lifters (including record-holding lifter Patrik Baboumian), wrestlers, boxers, NFL players, tennis champions, olympic runners, to name just a few. You can read about some of them on this website devoted to documenting the achievements of plant-based athletes.
There used to be some doubt on this, as plant-based diets in sport were somewhat untested, but nowadays, it is absolutely undeniable that you can compete at even the highest levels of sport on a plant-based diet, and that many athletes report significant performance gains after they made the transition. I’d recommend checking out The Game Changers on Netflix, which spends a lot of time debunking this particular myth, explaining how for-profit industries created it, and why it still persists today. It’s also just a great documentary for anyone interested in health, fitness and nutrition.
