What the ?*@#! Clever and punny, but I don't think I have the cojones to wear a t-shirt with this anytime soon, especially in Hawaiian class. It's a mishmash of Hawaiian, pidgin and English in a punny and hippie kind of way. And itʻs got shock value. Mālama means to take care of. The writer spelled it correctly, with the long dash over the first a. (This lengthens the "a" sound.) "da" is from Hawaiian pidgin for "the." Vag is from the English - vagina.. and ʻĀina is land (and they also spelled this correctly too!)... so... take care of the land... or take care of the vagina. Up to you. Maybe both. Celebrating birth and renewal today with little green sea turtles, newly hatched. Even in the darkest, most confusing times, there are rays of light - like these little ones making their way to the ocean. Go, go, go! There is a force greater than them that makes them go in the right direction. I like to think that we are guided by the same force, if we just wake up and start fresh... like the turtles. . We were so lucky this morning after Dawn Patrol - walking the beach at 6 am to look for turtle nesting signs - to see a turtle nest hatching. I've only seen one other one before. Skippy Hau, my favorite marine biologist on the island, excavated the nest. 23 eggs hatched alive, 1 baby died, 57 eggs unhatched that will be incubated off-site. This was the high spot of all the recent sad weeks - going out with some friends at the crack of dawn to do Dawn Patrol along the beach looking for signs of turtle nests. We saw this “turtle aquarium” at the water’s edge. Magical.
