“Me too,” Caleb murmured as he shifted to get more comfortable, turning slightly away from Maverick and scooting down so he could be half leaning on him, half laying back on Maverick’s side, and using his shoulder as a pillow.  “I’m really happy just to be taking a sub class at all.  No one trying to make me do any Dom assignments or anything.  I can’t tell you how many times an assignment said something like ‘how would you handle this as the Dominant partner?’ and I just wanted to write ‘I wouldn’t.’“  He huffed a soft laugh, clearly not actually upset, at least at the moment.  He took Mav’s hand, the arm that was wrapped around him, and started to play with it, just idly playing with Mav’s fingers.  “But getting to have a sub class with you in it, that’s even better.  It’s like we’ve said, we’re in this together.  We’re like a team.”

Mav smiled as Caleb started to use his shoulder as a pillow, and turned his head slightly to press a kiss to his boyfriend’s head. “I’m really happy you ain’t gotta fake your way through Dom assignments anymore,” Mav smiled, snuggling some more against Caleb as they held hands. “Man, getting to be in a sub class with my boyfriend is gonna be so awesome. We’re gonna be the star students,” he grinned. “Well, you are, anyway,” he added, shaking his head. “I like that. We’re a team, we’re always a team.”

Caleb laughed and shifted to make room for Mav, and then immediately invaded his space to lean on him.  “Oh, yeah, that would be fun.  Well, depending on what we learn, I guess.  Because it might be more like, how to be a submissive out in the world and stuff.  Or things about long term submission, not just for a scene.  Because it’s prepping us to leave the institute, right? But if we do learn anything like you were thinking, I agree, it’d be fun to show him together.”

Mav immediately put an arm around Caleb, and held him close. “That makes sense,” he nodded. “Either way, I really wanna learn it all,” he admitted, excitedly. “And I really love that we get to do that together,” Mav smiled, before leaning closer, and pressing a kiss to Caleb’s cheek.

“Yeah? Cool, let me know when your Fields Medal comes in the mail.”  Caleb knew that Mav had no idea what any of that was, but he liked joking about it anyway.  “Ohhh, you’re right! I didn’t think about that!  That’s fantastic.  I can steal your notes.”

“I will definitely do that,” Mav grinned, rolling his eyes playfully as he sat down next to his boyfriend. “You’re such a dork,” he teased. “Nuh uh! But I was hoping we’d learn new things, and we can plan together to show them to Master.”

Mav had no idea what the Hodge conjecture was, but he knew it had to be a sciency thing. He waved his hand dismissively. “Figured that one out over breakfast this morning,” he grinned. “We’re gonna be in Advanced Submission together!”

FTF: ‘Do you know how happy it makes me to have you ask me, without me telling you to talk to me beforehand?’ He smiled as Mav asked the question. In his head, it felt like a step towards submitting their application for a trial claim. ‘Okay, remind me what you took last semester sweet boy.’ he prompted.

‘I do think a trial claim is something we’re going to be considering a lot more seriously in the coming weeks.’ Eric mused, chewing his lower lip as he contemplated Maverick retaking the class. On one hand, the submissive feeling comfortable was important, but on the other, Eric wasn’t entirely convinced he saw the need for the class to be retaken. ‘I’m actually planning on taking the pain play independent study this semester – Professor Randall agreed to tutor me a little further on some aspects of it, help me get more familiar with some other instruments.’ he explained. ‘I’m sure I’d be able to help you with your independent study in some way though.’ he winked. ‘I actually think that would be a good thing for you; it’s a big kink that we play in.’ He looked up from the screen, adding those two classes to Mav’s submission form. ‘Do you really feel like you need to retake Romantic Claims? What makes you think that?’

Mav looked up at Eric, and smiled widely. “Yeah? For real?” he asked, eager at the idea of taking on the challenge of a trial claim, even knowing how tough it had been for Caleb and Eric. “Oh really?” Mav asked, as Eric admitted he was planning on taking the pain independent study. “Can I be who you practice on?” Mav asked eagerly. He nodded as Eric added the two classes they had down so far, and took a deep breath as Eric asked him why he felt like he should retake Romantic Claims. “I guess, um, I guess that I still don’t really...get romance?” Mav mumbled, looking sheepish. “I know I love both ya’ll, but I guess I just don’t really know how to do romance, and I don’t wanna let ya’ll down when I ain’t romantic enough.”

His fingers found themselves weaving into Maverick’s hair effortlessly as he took the laptop from him and studied the list presented to him. He’d selected his own, but he wanted to look at everything with a fresh pair of eyes when it came to choosing for Maverick. ‘Are there any in particular that appeal to you more than the others?’ he asked, glancing up at him.

Mav smiled happily as Eric played with his hair, and once Eric took his laptop, he idly began to massage his Dom’s leg. “I guess that I’m kinda nervous I ain’t good enough at understanding romantic claims yet. We’re real close to making it happen, and I gotta be good at it. So maybe retaking it ain’t a bad idea,” Mav admitted. “But also, a chastity independent study could be a real fun thing for us to do together.”

Mav smiled right back at Eric, pausing for a moment. He hadn’t considered that this could be a small defining moment of their relationship. He sat down at Eric’s feet, holding his laptop where he had several tabs open, showing off the classes list. “I took Sub 103 last semester, which means I’m onto Advanced Submission now!” he grinned, clearly eager about that. “I also took Anticipating a Double Claim, Intermediate Chastity and Romantic Claims.”

FTF: 'You're so cute when you ask for what you want. It's my favourite thing to do.' Eric remarked, looking up from his phone. 'In fact, I think, for the rest of this week, I'm going to insist you ask for everything you want or you won't get it.'

Caleb looked up, smiling, but then gaped at his Dom.  “Everything?  But…  That’s…  Sir!  That’s so mean!  Why do you hate me?”

‘I’m certain he’ll join us soon.’ Eric had a great deal of faith in Caleb and the progress he’d made, more than he suspected Caleb had in himself and what had started out as something playful, he soon realised could be something valuable and testing. If it didn’t work, and Caleb didn’t come in, he’d excuse himself and leave Mav to cooking while he spoke to him but he trusted it wouldn’t come to that. He squeezed Mav’s waist when he became aware of Caleb hovering in the doorway and shared a brief smile with him. He waited for Caleb to ask his question before flashing him a warm smile. ‘I can’t speak for Maverick but I would really love it if you would join us and help out, my love.’ He held out a hand towards him. ‘Come on - I can set you to work chopping some sweet potato.’

Caleb knew what Eric was doing.  He wasn’t an idiot.  It was classical conditioning, the behaviorists would be proud.  Praise Caleb for the correct behavior, reward him, get him to repeat it.  Knowing that didn’t mean it didn’t work.  Eric’s smile still made him feel warm and mushy inside, and Mav clearly pleased expression on top of that made him feel almost embarrassed from so much attention.  “Yes, Sir,” he murmured, and moved into the kitchen to start chopping the sweet potatoes as he’d been instructed.  He kept quiet, not really joining into the casual banter between Mav and Eric, but he was happy to be helpful, at least.  He didn’t even feel annoyed at being manipulated.  He was annoyed, sure, but only with himself for having such stupid hang ups that Eric had to resort to fucking operant conditioning to get him to ask if he can help cook.  He hated that the three of them were constantly stumbling over his issues like this.  Almost as much as he hated asking for things.

Mav grinned as Eric squeezed his waist, and the quickest glance told him what Eric had seen. That Caleb was waiting, and likely trying to summon the courage to actually ask for what he wanted. It was moments like this, more than anything else, that made Mav the most proud of his boyfriend. He knew that things that he took for granted were real struggles for Caleb. He wasn’t sure exactly what having to ask for what he wanted was brushing up against for Caleb, but he knew to be patient and let Caleb work it out for himself, right now. He kept talking with Eric, playful and teasing, trying to keep the atmosphere as light as possible, but he kept shooting what he hoped where subtle looks over at Caleb, too. Finally, after a few minutes, he darted over to his boyfriend and placed a kiss on Caleb’s cheek. “I love you,” he said quickly, before hurrying back to Eric’s side.

‘Ah look –’ He looked back over his shoulder and smiled brightly. ‘There’s a boy who’s caught on to how this works. It’s not complicated; when you want something, I want you to ask me.’ he encouraged. He backed into the kitchen and beckoned Maverick towards him. ‘You can’t however ask for the other. You can’t cook dinner tonight because I want to try a new recipe, but you’re more than welcome to cook with me.’ he winked. ‘That’s how you do it Caleb, my love. You need to ask. To cook and if you want me to spank your perky behind later.’

Caleb flopped back onto the couch as he watched Mav walk into the kitchen with Eric.  He knew that he was being stubborn, and that he should just get over himself and ask, but it was hard and he didn’t want to.  Somewhere along the line, when he’d been with his ex, he’d just stopped asking for things unless it was absolutely necessary.  He was better at it, now, but it still triggered those same worries.  Was he asking for too much?  Was he being greedy, selfish, demanding?  What if he was interrupting?  Was he being impatient, and asking for something his Dom didn’t want to give him yet?  Was he being self centered, asking for what he wanted instead of trying to focus on what his Dom wanted?  It was just so much safer to stay quiet, and be grateful for whatever his Dom wanted him to have.  Caleb sat there on the couch for the next several minutes, sulking and listening to Maverick and Eric in the kitchen.  But no matter how much he didn’t like it, the need to do as he was told eventually won out over his stubbornness.  He walked over to the kitchen but didn’t go in, just paused in the doorway, watching Mav and Eric.  It took another minute to get himself to actually speak.  “Can I help?” he asked in a small voice.

Maverick knew there was something more going on here. He didn’t pretend to know the kind of responsibilities Eric had as their Dom, but he knew that he wanted Caleb to be freer with his needs, and if Eric could make that happen, then Mav was all for it. He was grinning as he helped Eric collection together the ingredients they needed for Eric’s new recipe, which was something he was excited about. As much as Nate had teased him about being forced to be vegan like Eric, Mav was excited to have a new thing to learn, to keep Eric’s growing household the way the Dominant wanted it. He turned his head as he heard Caleb’s quiet voice, and shot his boyfriend a pleased smile. Mav knew this had been hard for Caleb, even if he wasn’t sure of the specific emotions going on inside Caleb’s head.

He pushed himself up off the couch, and stretched his arms up above his head. ‘Right, while you two try to think of ways to get yourself out of your current dilemma, I think I’m going to go and make a start on dinner.’ he nodded. ‘That’s right boys; no submissives in the kitchen tonight.’ He knew that would be something they’d likely protest, and it was part of the reason he said as much – perhaps that would entice them into asking to join him.

Well, it had been worth a try, even if Caleb hadn’t expected it to work.  He pouted again, then gaped at Eric when he told them they weren’t allowed in the kitchen.  “What?”  He slumped back against the couch and looked at Mav.  “I knew it.  We’re being punished.”

Mav frowned as Eric stood up, having hoped they could snuggle for a while. But his mouth fell open in surprise when Eric told him they weren’t allowed in the kitchen tonight. “But what did we do?” he asked, before sighing as he slouched back with Caleb. He frowned after a moment, and then quickly sat upright again. “Wait! We’ve gotta for what we want, right? Can we cook dinner tonight, Master?”

“He’s being so mean,” Caleb complained to Maverick.  “He’s making me ask for things. And I hate asking for things.”  He pouted at Eric again and then sat back with a huff. A second later, he gave Eric an imploring look.  “May I please not have to ask for things?” he asked, hopeful he’d found a loophole.

Mav gave a shocked gasp as Caleb complained to him, even though he was snuggling closer to Eric. “Ask for things? I ain’t ever heard of anything so mean,” Mav leaned in, and pressed a kiss against Eric’s neck. “Aw, Master, come on. Ya ain’t gotta include me in all this!” Mav whined playfully, before grinning at Caleb’s plot. “Yeah, we can please not have to do that?”
