War a Ray Ferrier x reader

No one would have believed, in the early years of the 21st century, that our world was being watched by intelligences greater than our own; that as men busied themselves about their various concerns, they observed and studied, the way a man with a microscope might scrutinize the creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water.
With infinite complacency, men went to and fro about the globe, confident of our empire over this world. Yet, across the gulf of space, intellects vast and cool and unsympathetic regarded our planet with envious eyes...and slowly, and surely, drew their plans against us.
The day the world you knew ended started so normal..
you ate your breakfast of a bagel and orange juice as you watched the news on tv in your apartment some reporter was talking about an earthquake
“Reports are coming in from the Ukraine of an earthquake of some sort today”
nothing would have prepared you for what happened later that day.
You stepped out of your apartment and nearly bumped into your neighbor Ray Ferrier
“Oh careful there darlin’ didn’t mean to bump into you” Ray said with a smile
You smiled back because his smile was contagious you hadn’t seen him that happy in a long time
“It’s alright Ray you seem happier this morning, something going on today?” You asked
“My kids are visiting for the weekend. I'm kinda excited about it..remind me to go to the store later will ya? I gotta go to work” Ray said as he rushed to his car
You remembered when you first moved in and Ray was a married man to a woman named Mary Ann who you didn’t particularly like and you also remember the devastation on Ray’s face when he was served divorce papers one morning
That’s when you started keeping an eye on him because you were worried about him and he in turn helped you with anything you needed
He was a close friend by now
and you knew he had been kind of separated from his kids lives but he wasn’t a horrible father he just never sees them.
“That’s great and I will but why don’t I go buy some groceries for you Ray you’ll forget when you get like this!” You called but he didn’t hear you over the revving up of his classic car
You went to the store and bought some groceries for Ray and a few things for his kids too and you were about to set them on the porch when you noticed a black van parked on in front of his apartment
It was Mary Ann and her new husband you guessed
She was very pregnant and looked annoyed as she looked at her watch
“He’s still at work” you said as you walked up to your house your arms full of bags of groceries
That’s when a car sped down the street
It was Ray who then walked over after pulling into his car park
“We said eight thirty right?” He said
Mary Ann sighed and they spoke amongst themselves
That’s when a teenage boy stepped out of the van with his earphones on full blast
you remembered him when he was a little kid who broke your window with a baseball once now he’s a teenager?
“There he is! Can I get a hug? An awkward handshake? Kick in the teeth? The doors locked by the way” Ray offered him
Robbie ignored Ray’s greeting all together and tried to open the door that Ray just said was locked
“Ah teenagers, don't they make great conversation?” You joked
Ray laughed and Mary Ann glared at you
That’s when Rachel walked over and hugged her dad and struggled to get her suitcase out of the van
She was only a little girl last time you saw her now she had to be at least ten years old now
“Need some help there sweetheart?” You offered even though your arms were full of the groceries you wanted to help
“I got it it’s not heavy” she said tugging on the rolling suitcase which everyone offered to help take inside
“You can’t roll it up the stairs can we?” Mary Ann said
Which puzzled you because wasn’t that the whole point of a rolling suitcase?
You walked inside with the group because your arms were getting tired due to carrying the groceries
Mary Ann walked around Ray’s apartment like she owned the place with judgment on her mind
Yes there was a car engine on the table but it was clear Ray had a different table for eating on and you didn’t really see the issue of it being there
Mary Ann walked over to the refrigerator and opened a jug of milk and smelled it made a face at the scent
“Your out of milk. and everything else” she declared like if Ray didn’t know what was in his own refrigerator
“Will you shut the door? that’s my refrigerator..” Ray said
That’s when he noticed you and took the groceries
“Thank you thank you” he mouthed to you as he took them from your hands
“Ah I see you still live next door Y/n?” Mary Ann asked
“Yep and congratulations by the way on your pregnancy” you said politely as she walked upstairs with Rachel’s suitcase
“I’ll be next door if you need anything” you said to Ray
You went home and started to do your laundry a few hours later while you were hanging them up on the outside clothesline you saw Ray and Robbie tossing a baseball back and forth
“You’re an asshole I hate coming here” Robbie said rudely
You winced at the flash of hurt in Ray’s eyes and when back to hanging laundry
“That why you act like such a dick?” Ray asked
That’s when Ray threw a fastball and Robbie missed it on purpose and it smashed into the window and Robbie went inside the house
“Tough day?” You asked Ray
“He hates me and his attitude is getting on my nerves” Ray said resting on the fence next to you
“He’s a teenage boy they live for cars girls and axe body spray I wouldn’t worry about him” you said
“True but I feel like I don’t even know my kids I may have forgotten a few things like plays and stuff but I always tried” Ray said
“your a good dad Ray just been a while”
That’s when Rachel chimed in
“You’ll never get through to him if you want him to listen to you-” she said sounding exactly like Mary Ann as she continued to play with her toy horses
“Are you your mother or mine?” Ray interrupted her
You didn’t see them for awhile after that.
You were bringing in the laundry when you noticed the sky looking odd
The clouds were dark and swirling
you were scared and rushed over to Ray when he and Rachel were outside watching the sudden lightning that got surprisingly close
“Get inside!” You cried as you and Ray and Rachel hid under his table
“Why won’t it stop!?” Rachel said cupping her hands over her ears
“It’s okay sweetheart it’s okay” you told her as Ray went to look for Robbie who took off with his car
Then everything moved quickly when Ray came back in covered in what looked like ashes
“Ray, are you okay?” You asked
Then Ray stood up quickly and started looking for supplies and you understood what was happening
“Rachel, can you go get your suitcase for me Darlin’?” Ray asked as he packed up the few things he could grab along with his gun
You held onto his hand and Rachel’s as Robbie and Ray walked in front of you
“Ray, what is going on?” You asked again confused and frightened as every one around you was running for their lives
That’s when Ray helped you and Rachel into a van with you in the backseat and Robbie upfront
“Dad, whose car is this?” Rachel asked
That’s when Manny stopped by the door to chat with Ray
“Get in the car manny or you're gonna die!” Ray screamed
“What do you mean?” Rachel sobbed as you held her
in a flash the monsters killed manny and Ray sped off down the street
“Get down! Get down!” He screamed
Rachel hid into you as you both hid in the seat
“Is it the terrorist?!” Rachel screamed
“We are in the only working car we are not stopping until we are in the clear” Ray said
“What’s going on?” Robbie asked
“Don’t you see we are under attack?!!” Ray exclaimed
Rachel was crying and panicking and screaming by then
Which wasn’t helping rays panic either
“Rachel..hey hey calm down sweetheart look at me baby I swear on my heart that I won’t let anybody hurt you I swear it” you soothed her softly
“Take belly breaths with me huh? And don’t look out the window, look at me, look at your stuffy horse, huh?”
Rachel calmed down and hugged her stuffed horse when you gave it to her
“That’s my brave girl” Ray said clearly calmer and more focused
“Ray you tell me what’s going on or what you know right now” you demanded
“This thing, thi..this machine it crawled out of the ground and started torching everything it was killing everybody” Ray said his voice thick with emotion or panic you didn’t know
“What is it? Is it terrorist?” Robbie interrupted
“No this came from someplace else” Ray said
“Like Europe?" Robbie asked
“No Robbie, not like Europe!” Ray barked
You were holding Rachel close as Ray sped down the highway
“That machine was already buried, maybe it came down in the lightning storm.” Ray said
“What do you do mean came down you said it was buried” you said confused
“The machine I was talking about was buried but what operates it that’s the question” Ray said a little panicked himself
You were going to say something but again Robbie interrupted you
“Why aren’t there any helicopters or airplanes?”
“Because it was an EMP! An electromagnetic pulse! Nothing will work if it's electric Robbie. Do you mind sitting down and letting me and your dad protect you because he and I are the adults here?” You said a little annoyed at him
“How did you figure that out?” Ray asked you
“AP science class and I used to be a teacher” you said
“What’s going on ?” Rachel asked feeling better than before
“There’s my girl, how's my girl doing?” Ray asked
“I’m feeling better” Rachel said
“I WANT MOM!!!” Rachel screamed
You held her and tried to get her to calm down as Ray sped down the street
Soon you were in the neighborhood where Tim and Mary Ann lived
You helped Ray as Robbie and Rachel ran inside calling for them
“Are you okay?” Ray asked you softly
“Yeah I’m fine just a little scared” you confessed
“It’s alright Y/n I promise” Ray said as he looked over the contents of the box of supplies
Which was a lot more than he would have had since you brought them groceries
“Thank goodness for my guardian angel” Ray said as he smiled softly at you
That’s when Ray and Robbie came in to room
“I’m going to call her” Robbie said
“Robbie, it was an electric shock that killed all the cell towers..” you explained
You were helping Ray make sandwiches for something to eat
Ray was trying his best to make light of the situation by shuffling the bread
But Robbie and Rachel just looked at him like he was crazy
“You have two options here eat and have a full stomach or not eat again for a while” you explained using your teacher voice
“I’m allergic to peanuts” Rachel said pushing the jar away
“Since when?” Ray asked concerned
“well good thing we didn’t touch the peanut butter yet” you said
You made her a jelly and cream cheese sandwich which she took happily
After eating ray guided them to the basement
“I want to sleep in my bed i have back problems” Rachel said
“Rachel do you really?” You asked as you helped her onto the air mattress bed and covered her up with a strawberry shortcake doll themed blanket
“No well I ride horses and they sometimes make my back hurt” Rachel explained
“You’ll be okay one night” you said
“Good night Robbie good night Rachel” Ray said
“Night Ray” Rachel and Robbie said
“I’m glad you are here” Ray whispered
“You saved my life Ray” you said
Then there was a loud explosion and fire and the machines returned and Ray grabbed Rachel and Robbie and you all ran into the lower room and you struggled to close the door fire licked at your hand painfully
In the morning everything was in pieces the house was ruined and you and Ray met a reporter who confirmed that the machines were from the lightning then sped away
Then Ray carried Rachel to the car and you sat in the front seat telling her not to look
A few hours later As you were waiting for Rachel to finish going for a bathroom break
A group of soldiers went by and Robbie almost joined them
“Robbie! No” you said and tried to pull him back that’s when he grabbed your hand making you cry out in pain
“Hey hey let me look at that” Ray said
You showed him your burned palm
“Oh Jesus y/n why didn’t you tell me you were hurt..” Ray said soft
“We had to run for our lives i didn’t want to slow us down” you said
“It doesn’t look bad just a little burn it’s okay” Ray soothed as he looked over the red blistering skin on your hand
That night as Ray drove into the city people attacked the van like crazy people
You grabbed Rachel from a crazed man and Ray fought to find Robbie in the crowd
After the van was stolen from you
You sat with Ray and Rachel and Robbie inside a diner
You held Ray as he began to cry all the stress collapsing on him
“Shh it’s alright your okay everything will be okay” you whispered to him
Soon afterwards you and the Ferriers walked to the pier and tried to get on a boat but the machines showed up again
You couldn’t swim but Ray held onto you until you and Rachel and Robbie reached the shore exhausted
“Are you okay sweetheart?” Ray asked you as you coughed up some water
Ray held you as suddenly the machines attacked and Robbie ran to join the army in their fight
You and Ray begged him to come back
Then an explosion happened
You and Ray were screaming for Robbie
You and Ray and Rachel ran away to a basement of a man who seemed nice
His name was Harlan ogilivy
You were helping Rachel to go to sleep Ray was soothing her too
“You won” Ray asked her gently
“the trot walk and canter competition third place” Rachel said
“Sing me a lullaby please?”
Ray stammered “I don’t know rach”
You knew plenty of them but instead you decided to sing little deuce coup by the beach boys and Ray joined in with you
Once Rachel was asleep you collapsed in rays arms
“Easy love easy” Ray soothed “your exhausted too”
“Ray if we survive this..I’ll take you out on a date” you said
Ray chuckled and placed a kiss on your head
“It’s a date darling” Ray soothed
You fell asleep and woke up later at the sound of the machines
You and Rachel hid together behind the steps as you watched the creatures move through the basement before leaving
Harlan had begun acting strangely too
You kept Rachel away from him as Ray figured out what he had to do
“Hey Rachel why don’t you sing to me hush a bye mountain?” You whisper tilting the blindfold on her head
Ray returned but a sudden attack separated you and Rachel from Ray
You were outside with Rachel when the aliens took you and Rachel into a basket full of other people
Ray got caught too and held you and Rachel close
“Are you both okay, love?” Ray asked you gently
Then the long tentacle moved grabbing Ray who had an idea after speaking with the army officer who had a grenade vest on
“Get down! everyone get down!” The army officer cried and you covered Rachel with your body as it crumbled
Ray rushed to you and Rachel
“My girls my brave girls” ray muttered holding you and Rachel close
The next few days were a blur of walking and hiding until you saw the aliens dying off and the military taking care of it
You finally made it to Boston and to Mary Ann’s family home but Rachel stayed beside you and Ray in shock of what she saw over the horizon
You all three hugged him tearfully
Time skip to a year later
You and Ray have been dating since that day Robbie came home and you were
Slowly rebuilding your life with him in New York slowly was being rebuilt better than ever
“We are safe now my love” you said to Ray as you rested in his arms
From the moment the invaders arrived, breathed our air, ate and drank, they were doomed. They were undone, destroyed, after all of man's weapons and devices had failed, by the tiniest creatures that God in his wisdom put upon this Earth. By the toll of a billion deaths, man had earned his immunity, his right to survive among this planet's infinite organisms. And that right is ours against all challenges. For neither do men live nor die in vain
