A disciplinary smack to the back of a stylish blue mane, and then her glare narrows reproachfully at Snow. ❝ And you – ❞

❝ Fatherhood isn’t all about the finances. You’re going to be a great dad because of who you are, not because of what’s in your wallet. Look, do you know how much money I put into this place to get it started? ❞ She motions broadly to the vacant space of the cozy cafe, dimly lit and diligently tidy after hours. ❝ Pretty much all of it. But when something is that important to you, you’ll make it work… And, just in case, you always have us to help you out. ❞ Though delayed, his punishment comes next – an affectionate wallop against his thick skull. ❝ Don’t argue. ❞

HE’S SECONDS AWAY FROM trying to wrangle Yuj into a h e a d l o c k when Lebreau steps in between them, putting an end to their antics before they’ve even begun. Always the m e d i a t o r. Or sometimes, according to Gadot, the wet blanket, which is always a sure-fire way to set her off.

“ Wha ——- ow! ”

HE DESERVES THAT WHACK to the head, and her t h o u g h t f u l lecture, knowing just how stubborn he’s being. For as long as Snow can remember, they’ve all been a team, looking out for each other. And right now, despite he & Serah’s best p r o t e s t s, they could use the support ——– whether it’s a financial f a v o r or just a late-night pep talk. Rubbing the back of his head a little sheepishly, he c h u c k l e s.

“ Argue? With you? Wouldn’t waste my breath, ” he says, his smile reaching both of his friends, gentle around the edges. “ Guys… Thanks. ”

it takes him a minute to FIX his ruffled hair, but then he reappears at lebreau’s side, leaning an elbow against her shoulder & nodding VEHEMENTLY. ❝ no need for thanks. what are friends for? pretty sure that baby will be just as big a part of OUR lives as it’ll be for yours & serah’s. ❞

after all, they’re one big happy family. it’s a statement that still rings TRUE, withstanding the test of time. ❝ hey, snow -------- you think i could be the godfather? i’m good with kids. i think. & i’m a WAY better choice than gadot or maqui. ❞ his grin stretches, expanding with excitement. ❝ when he gets old enough, i can even take him out SURFING with me! ❞

✿ _____ A roll of the eye is halted, amber orbs barely circling ‘round to the ceiling before they refocus upon Snow. Diligently does the man strive toward deception, parrying their concern with playful words and nonchalance. And perhaps, if Lebreau were of a less intuitive nature, she might’ve fallen an ignorant victim to such a hoax. But nary a trivial detail goes unnoticed beneath her scrutinizing gaze – not a slouch of his posture, nor a drowsy blink of his eyes.

❝ Yuj is right. ❞ Arms fold in front of her chest, brow arching as if to preface an infallible argument.

❝ And what would Serah have to say about these all-nighters you’ve been pulling, hmm? ❞

“ Hey, hey, hey —— ” he squares his wide shoulders, a hand c l a p p i n g Yuj on the back, the other pointing a finger at Lebreau. “ No ganging up on the boss! ”

HE KNOWS THEY MEAN WELL. They a l w a y s do. But he had already decided long ago that if he and Serah are going to do this p a r e n t h o o d thing, then he’s going to do it right. And Snow, an a v i d believer in the age-old philosophy of ‘go big or go home’, is definitely going b i g. A few extra hours at the garage means nothing to him ——- he’d go to far g r e a t e r lengths to ensure his new family is happy & supported.

“ I know what I’m doin’, alright? ” he says, voice lowering, m a t u r e d in a matter of seconds. “ I’m doin’ everything I gotta do to make sure I’m taking care of my family. Kids ain’t cheap, y’know. ”

yuj blinks his eyes at snow. the guy’s a NATURAL leader, that’s for sure. whether he’s leading their team to victory or leading his family toward comfort. it’s inspiring, if he’s being HONEST, & yuj silently marks it down as one of the many reasons to ADMIRE snow villiers. but, of course, he keeps these heartfelt thoughts to himself, responding instead by lifting his arm, playfully SWATTING away his friend’s hand that still rests on his back. that’s more their style.

❝ wow, man ... your kid’s not even born yet & you’re already talking like a dad. ❞ he aims an ear-splitting GRIN in his direction, laughing through the words. ❝ does this mean we gotta start calling you old man villiers now? ❞

✿ _____ Her final concoction is evenly distributed among three short glasses, expending the remaining contents of whichever liquor bottle had dwindled down the fastest by the end of the night. It shimmers a golden bronze beneath the sparse lighting of the closing cafe, and its pungent odor wafts past their nostrils as she slides the glasses across the counter, one at a time, toward their ready hands. Her own drink is then lifted in subtle ceremony, with her words cutting through their idle prattle.

❝ Cheers – ❞ The glance she offers in Snow’s direction is brief yet meaningful. ❝ – to our favorite father-to-be. ❞

HE’S BARELY EVEN conscious of the way he lifts the glass, downs it in one go, & brings it back down to the counter with a c l a n k, hoping that the alcohol will give him some sort of buzz ——- a n y t h i n g to keep him going. Icy blues are half-hidden beneath sagging lids, and it’s kind of a miracle that he hasn’t d o z e d off right here on the bar. He’s not used to these late night hours, or the realization that, despite what he might’ve t h o u g h t, he really isn’t invincible anymore. But then he thinks of Serah & their b a b y on the way ——– his growing, happy family ——– & he knows he can’t let up now. There’s too m u c h to get done before his kid arrives, and making sure they have the funds to give it the b e s t life possible is number one on Snow’s list.

“ Heh ——- I’m the only father-to-be that you guys know of. But I appreciate the flattery. Keep it comin’! ”

A QUICK GLANCE at the clock i n t e r r u p t s his grin. It’s getting late, later by the second, & he’s already wasted enough time sitting here, catching up with his friends while they c l o s e the place up. “ Aaaaactually… Rain check on that. Gotta get back to work. ”

from the corner of his eye, yuj catches the way his FEARLESS leader chugs the contents of his drink in one fell swoop. so effortlessly ! he tries to do the same, mimicking that CONFIDENCE, but the stuff is way stronger than it smells, so he ends up trying to MASK his coughing fit into his sleeve, eyes peeled down at the counter where he continues to count out the pile of TIPS he earned from his shift that night. smooth recovery.

❝ wait ------- work ? ❞ he straightens up, brow creased. ❝ i get overtime & all that, but ... it’s almost midnight, dude. ❞

My roommate is gay but I believe we’re probably like platonic soulmates bc whenever I text him “bad day” he picks me up a greek salad and a five guys fry and whenever he texts me “bad day” i pick him up ribs and cheesecake at bbq heaven on MLK street and we texted each other “bad day” at the same time today and came home to each other’s food that’s like. real love imo.

✿ _____ A moment of untroubled peace, stunted by the swift harkening of reality. Her sigh warms the air in front of her lips, which curl at the corners quite fondly. Truly is he the most upstanding of recruits – always at the ready, always eager to please.

❝ Yeah, I’d like to see him try. ❞

‘Tis only a halfhearted retort, lacking its usual buoyancy, muted by the calming swell of ocean’s rising tide. Her attention is neither fully here nor there. Instead it flocks toward the struggle to remain conscious.

❝ We’re more likely to get into trouble with one of those wild monsters than good ‘ol Boss, you know. ❞

-------- maybe she has a point. snow might be the leader around here, but DISCIPLINE isn’t really his style ( leave that dirty work up to gadot ). but even without any threat, yuj feels bound to his DUTY, going above & beyond, desperate to prove that he can handle the same amount of RESPONSIBILITY as the others. he imagines it most of the time ------- the way they still treat him like a junior recruit who TREMBLES in the frontlines, finger on the trigger of an unsteady gun.

❝ yeah right ! ❞ he shifts, most likely JOGGLING her peaceful position against his shoulder, jabbing a thumb into the center of his chest. ❝ those monsters don’t stand a CHANCE with me in charge ! ❞

they’ve been sitting out here for a while now, soaking in the LAST of the sun’s warmth ------- & yuj would be lying if he said his arm isn’t starting to fall ASLEEP under her weight. it’s just that she looks so peaceful ... & he knows that even a SECOND of relaxation is hard to come by now that they’re fully embracing their new ‘PULSIAN’ lifestyle. so he sucks it up, focusing instead on the orange-pink horizon in front of them.

PANIC. her reaction was simply that of panic. Lebreau wasn’t wrong; Snow was full of trouble. not intentionally, but he was like a magnet for it. everyday, she regrets not going with him. it was her sister he was looking for, she should’ve worked harder to convince him to let her go, too. sure, she’s only on occasion fought necessary battles, ( and the hardest one so far, ended with her fainting. ) but she would be with someone who knew how, and she could make sure he didn’t push himself TOO FAR like usual. he was not a l’cie anymore, if he gets into trouble, Lebreau was right. he’d be gone.

Her panic causes her to run out of breath, not even halfway to the pillar. she’s made her way outside of the fence, over the bridge, but not past Maqui’s workstation. she leans against the rocky wall, hands on her knees, breathing heavily with tears that weren’t able to be held back dripping onto the ground. ❛ he — he can’t be gone! ❜ the one person who believed her, who made her smile, the one who always reassured her, and promised her again and again, the love of her life. she can hardly go on without her sister, but without Snow, too? unimaginable.

there’s a deep breath, and she sits up, her eyes are closed momentarily until she opens them to look Yuj in the eyes. voice is lowered to a weak whisper. ❛ he promised us he’d come back. ❜ MAYBE a year was too long for him to be away, but Lightning has now been missing for two. it’s one of those silly thoughts she has to keep hoping – that it took a year to find someone missing for one, and he’s on his way home now with Lightning in tow. ❛ he has to. he never breaks his promises. ❜

yuj comes to a SKIDDING stop in front of her, lingering close but not too close. pulse is still relatively FOREIGN territory for them, after all, & being this far from the center of town means that monsters could POP out at any minute. it’s in his natural instincts to protect ---------- even if the coast does look PRETTY clear. he leans forward slowly, trying to catch her downward glance, when he notices the tears SPILLING down her cheeks. & that’s when he starts to panic a little, too. what can he POSSIBLY do to make her calm down? snow would know what to do ...

❝ serah ... i know. ❞ his hands reach out ASSUREDLY, gripping her shoulders. of course he knows that his hands aren’t the ones she probably wishes were there to COMFORT her right now, but he hopes that some supportive presence will help to ANCHOR her, even just a little bit. ❝ he’s not gonna break his promise. ‘specially not one he made to YOU. he takes that stuff seriously, y’know. ❞

he gives her shoulders a SQUEEZE. nothing rough, but just enough to make her realize that he means what he’s saying --------- not just EMPTY words of pity. ❝ snow’s like a brother to me. so i believe in him, too. even if you & me are the ONLY two who still do ... that’s gotta count for something, right? ❞

nights have often lingered too long, she finds herself locked inside when it’s too dark to wander outside. the stronger the foes meant she’d be kept inside, away from trouble, and easy to watch. but often times, she manages to escape to the pillar, safe and unharmed. speaking to the two she, for-certain, knows reside in the crystal pillar. she’s not sure if they can hear her, or even care to listen, but it helps her to speak to Vanille and Fang, whenever the chance arises. it’s refreshing, and no one can look to her with sympathy. venting to the NORA gang, or anyone within the village would be a waste of breath.

this night, however she’s stayed in the house, given Lebreau a break on feeding the monsters that consume way more than they should. it gave her a distraction, a much needed one. but it still bothered her to not make an extra serving for Snow. she wants to believe that if she does, and even sets an extra plate, he’d bust through the door, Lightning close behind. she shakes her head, now that dinner was done, she’d to go find everyone. Gadot and Maqui were summoned by the smell, but Lebreau and Yuj, she knew she’d have to make a mini trek.

❛ hey.. i’ve got din– ❜ now atop the roof, she hears the words. ones that make her heart sink. HE’S GONE. they repeat. she forgets about dinner, she forgets about everything. her hands grip his necklace that laid in her pocket, and there’s tears in her eyes. ❛ it’s — ready. ❜ she runs off, down the ladder, out of the house, to the pillar.

he turns his head to lebreau, searching her EXPRESSION for some kind of hint that maybe she’s just joking, but all he finds is solemn DEFEAT. moving on without snow? but he’s their boss. their FEARLESS leader. he just can’t be ... gone. before yuj can even respond ( not that he has a response to something like that anyway ), he hears the CREAK of footsteps stopping on their way up the wooden ladder, closely followed by serah’s voice --------

❝ serah ------- !! ❞ he shoots up to a sitting position so FAST that it makes the roof tiles creak even more. moonlight glistens off the tears in her eyes & then she’s OFF ------- to where, yuj has no clue, but she’s clearly upset by the overheard conversation & he can’t just let her WANDER off by herself in that kind of state. as he starts clambering to his feet, he spares a HEADSHAKE at the girl still by his side. ❝ that was harsh, lebreau. ❞

back on the sandy shore at last, yuj can see serah’s SMALL frame taking off into the distance. he breaks into a sprint, trying to catch up with her. ❝ serah, wait! just hang BACK a sec! ❞

✿ _____ When night falls upon their seaside village, the clouds dissipate against the inky black sky, opening up to an expanse of brilliantly flickering constellations – endless, hovering over the gentle ripples of a calm ocean, as far as the eye can see. She lay on her back, amber gaze pointing skyward as she lazily traces patterns between the twinkling specks. Her mind wanders freely, recalling the familiarity, the warm summer evenings of their youth; how often they would make wishes upon those stars – whispering naive promises about how they would make the world a better place, and how they would always stick together as comrades, as friends, as a family.

Idly does she wonder if the stars remember their pleas.

❝ I just needed a break from you buffoons for a minute. ❞ She has yet to even glance behind, but deftly does a palm pat the unoccupied space beside her to beckon his company. ❝ It’s weird. The house feels kind of empty now, don’t you think? ❞

❝ must’ve been that BIG personality of his taking up so much space. ❞ he chuckles ( a wimpy one, at that ), trying to make LIGHT of the situation. mostly to distract himself while he hoists himself up from that last peg on the ladder. he’s never been GREAT with heights, even if he’s never admitted it aloud before. thanks to friends like his, fears become more like FALLACY. with a resounding ‘oof’, he’s rolling crawling onto the roof, scooting down the slope, & after just a minor but terrifying SKID of his left foot on a wobbly tile, he’s finally shoulder to shoulder with lebreau, laying with hands behind his head. graceful.

------- but one look at that CELESTIAL masterpiece & yuj suddenly remembers why he’s always ignored that panicked pounding in his chest from TEN feet off the ground. the view really is something from all the way up here.

❝ he’ll be back before we know it. that’s what he PROMISED us, anyway. and what else can we do but take him at his word, y’know? ❞

but there’s no SURPRISE in the young man’s voice because somehow he just knew he’d find her here on the roof of n.o.r.a. house. call it an old HABIT. for as long as yuj can remember, dating all the way back to their childhood on cocoon, the rooftop has been their REFUGE. their hangout. their not-so-secret hideaway where they’ve talked until their throats were sore, stargazed until they’ve ACCIDENTALLY fallen asleep, laughed until they’ve cried, & cried until they’ve laughed. these creaky roof tiles hold so MANY memories ... even the ones that feel so far away now.

❝ we all thought you DITCHED us down there. ❞ yuj lingers on the top step of the ladder, hesitant to finish the climb & add his weight. not that he doesn’t TRUST snow & gadot’s craftsmanship, but it’s been a while since more than one of them was up here at a time. & they’re not exactly KIDS anymore.

❝ everything ... cool? ❞
