Katara's Later Life
Katara is one of my favorite characters from the original series. Some fans speculate that her future in the franchise, post-comics, but pre-Korra was uneventful. They envision a Katara that married Aang, had his kids, did some healing and that was it, and then disappeared after Aang died. I think LoK implies something very different. The White Lotus discovered that 4yr Korra was the Avatar. Now the avatar needs a water bending master. The Lotus member, leading the delegation, is a water bender. Korra's father seems to be a master water bender and her uncle is an even greater master. With all those options they recruit master Katara. Katara continues to mentor Korra all the way up until Korra's fire bending test. The Lotus and Master Yim (Korra's fire bending master) don't even pass Korra until Katara gives her blessing and council. I think we should consider what this scene is communicating to us. Why would an organization, which is dedicated to the Avatar's development and success, seek out a lady who basically did nothing important for 55yrs, and task said lady with guiding the Avatar during her most formative years? Katara's recruitment and the other masters deference to her is a clue to the kind of life Katara must've led. She likely led a life of adventure and consequence befitting of the character we fell in love with in ATLA.
