With every synonym she spoke, his expression seemed to dim. “I'm your father, Natalie; it’s my job to protect you. Some things are better left unsaid.”

“I don’t know, but said it like you were judging me. I don’t like to be judged.”

“I’m a college professor. They pay me to judge young people.”

“What? You got a problem with that?”

“Why would I? It’s not any of my business,” he said simply.

“I was just kidding, dad. You’re a perfectly good question answerer.” She jokingly reassured him, giving off a small smile. “You don’t have to be so mysterious all the time, though, you know.”

“Right, of course,” he tried to back out of it with a soft chuckle. “I guess it has been a long night. Or -- morning, apparently.” He had glanced at his watch. “Mysterious?”

“Okay.” She stated simply, choosing not to push the subject further. “You know, I should have learned by now not to ask you questions.” She joked, shaking her head at her father.

“That’s not entirely your fault. I haven’t exactly learned how to answer them,” he tried to reply much in the way she did, though it was regrettably much flatter.

“I dropped out of college after my first semester. My freshman year, eight years ago. So I got nothing but time on my hands.”

“Oh, I see,” was his rather snobbish reply. “That’s nice.”

“I was, uh ─ I was going for a late night jog. Didn’t think anyone would be out here.”

“Really late night.” However, realizing who was speaking to, he wasn’t surprised. It wasn’t like a Mikaelson to fear what lurked in the shadows.

“I think the better question is what are you doing, dad? Why are you on the floor?”

“It’s nothing,” he said rather bluntly, moving to stand up.

“Don’t mention it.” The blonde stated, before pulling out a syringe full of vervain and injecting the needle into the vampire’s neck. “That should keep him down for a little while.” She looked over at Wesley. “You okay?”

The officer didn’t need to know that she was merely a nuisance. Not only did he have it handled, despite his position on the floor, he needed that vampire in his custody. “I think I’m okay, yes,” he told her, ‘finding it in himself’ to rise to his feet. It was an simple enough role to play. “Some things never seem to change."

A part of her couldn’t help but wonder why she continued to be the person others expected her to be. She was happy – she was, yet she couldn’t manage to fully shake the person she used to be. Sighing heavily, she turned back toward Wes, knowing very well that neither her husband nor her children would approve of her behavior. “I wouldn’t know,” she stated with a shrug of her shoulders. “Haven’t actually seen any of them for a while now, but I assume they’re fine. We have this deal that if anything were to go wrong, they’ll come to me.”

Whether he was surprised or impressed, he didn’t know for sure, as he turned back toward her. “I relate to that,” he said with a soft smile. “But, I admit, some of it is my fault. I’ve gotten used to them out of the house, and my life is very... distracting. They are fine, though, in case you were wondering too.”

“What does it look like? I’m helping to save your ass.”

Wes looked upon the vampire that she had just, well, he wasn’t sure what she had done to him. All he really knew for sure was that his assailant was now on the floor -- most likely unconscious. “Thank you?”

“What are you doing?”

Luke scrubbed at his face, pondering if he should shave or not in the near future as he felt the scruff along his jaw line. “Hm, talk big or small but don’t expect anything in the ways of an intelligent response.” Truthfully he loved the sound of his husband’s voice. It would be disastrous if he didn’t since there had been times often that Wes broke out into a long speech of science that Luke only half understood.

Mirroring his lovers actions, he affectionately brushed the back of his fingers against Luke’s rough cheek. It was no secret that Wes was conflicted when it came to his facial hair, as he was quite fond of him with and without. He offered a smile. “I'll just have to make due with that impressively coherent warning.”

“Seems as though the only thing the man knows how to do is be annoying.” If there was one person Katherine couldn’t stand entirely, Damon would always be the first person to come to mind. As for the man before her, he came in at a close second. “Right – your mere presence brings annoyance.” She paused for a moment, a wicked grin crossing the brunette’s lips. “Care to change that? I’d be happy to repay you for your pestering with pain.”

“You’ll find I am quite compliant -- no torture required.” He never did understand the pride on some of these monsters. Always having to prove who was the biggest and the baddest. “I was simply going to ask about the family, but I suppose, why would you tell me?” Wes paused to laugh softly, head shaking as he walked past her.

“I’m not really in the mood for company right now.”

“I can see that,” he said rather flatly. He really wasn't built to handle situations like these -- especially when it came to strangers.

Luke smiled broadly at the chaste kiss, taking his seat across from his husband. “I’ll have to thank you later then if you order my favorite,” he spoke with a smirk, knowing full well Wes had when it came to his coffee. Age may have made Luke wiser but it did nothing to tame him like the sweet bitterness of coffee.

“Of course.” He knew more than anyone that Luke’s gamble was as transparent as his terms. Wes knew his tastes inside and out -- his memory impeccable. Momentarily eyeing his tired lover, he withheld a laugh. “Should I save the small talk?”
