I don’t know too much about Hermes and would love to hear some things about him (both in a historical sense and your personal experience)
so! ill give a general idea but for more specific stuff / areas you can always send more asks or reply to any posts / dm me 🤠
okay! in a general sense, Hermes is the god of... A Lot Of Stuff.
"standard god", i'd say. [insert here that saying that Hermes is the god you should pray for if you don't know who to pray to, because if it isn't a part of his many, MANY domains, he'll know who actually presides over it]
just to make sure we know some of this "a lot", here's a small list:
- god of shepherds, herds and flocks
- god of travellers, roads and hospitality (as well as god of feasts and banquets)
- god protector of the home and god of guard dogs (as a god of boundaries!)
- god of merchants and trade
- god of thievery / thieves
- god heralds and diplomacy (as he is the Messenger of the Gods) (could be expanded into god of divine messages, and rustic divination)
- god of language (writing, speech and eloquence) (also aligned with the diplomacy thing)
- somewhat god of luck and joy
- psychopomp, guide of the dead
- god of sleep (bringer of sleep and dreams) and of dreams of omen (messages sent by the gods and the ghosts of the dead)
- god of contests and gymnasiums
- god of herds / flocks / animal husbandry ("including cattle-herding, shepherding, goat-herding and even the breeding of horses and mules", according to theoi.com)
im kind of sick so these are all the braincells i have at the moment! again, if you want to ask about anything else or if you want me to elaborate on a specific aspect, im always down! as well as for questions about my personal experiences ✨
i highly recommend that you look into his theoi.com page and his book from the gods and heroes of the ancient world series (i love how basically all the chapter titles have a trans- prefix, i feel very seen). i also have a post with some Hermes-related quotes from jennifer larson's "ancient greek cults: a guide" if you wanna check that out! and as always his tag is always filled with masterposts / various resources (i particularly love this one)
