Personality and relationships
Pietro is a flirt, a troublemaker and a lil shit. He can be very blunt and uses humor and bitterness to hide his trauma.
He’s stubborn and overconfident, ready to take a challenge even when his enemies are far stronger than him.
He’s very protective of Wanda, the only family he has left. The twins have always been close, and the successive tragedies in their lives only brought them closer.
Pietro works with the Avengers, but he isn’t close to many of them. He might joke with nearly everyone and flirt with half the people he meets, but he rarely trusts someone. When that happens, though, his loyalty can hardly be shaken.
Stealing from the rich or from big companies to give to everyday people (or just to himself) is one of his favorite past times. He’s made some contacts thanks to his illegal activities, but he’s not organized or formal about it in any way.
Backstory
Pietro’s backstory mostly matches the MCU version.
He was born in Sokovia, where he spent his childhood with Wanda and their parents. Both Pietro and his sister had latent powers that wouldn’t fully manifest until much later in their lives.
The twins are mutants, adopted by their sokovian parents. They grew up not knowing that their biological father is Erik Lehnsherr, aka Magneto.
When the twins were 10, a mortar shell hit their family home, killing their parents. Pietro and Wanda were hiding under the bed when a second missile hit, but didn’t go off. The twins stayed hidden, a few feet from the shell, until they were rescued two days later. During all that time, they stared at the shell, fearing it would go off. On it, they could read “Stark Industries”. The episode left Pietro scarred for life, with a profound despise for the Stark name.
Pietro and Wanda were later radicalized, rioting against American forces and their heros, notably Tony Stark and the Avengers. They were manipulated by HYDRA and became test subjects of Wolfgang von Strucker. The tests developed Pietro’s superspeed ability.
The twins were manipulated by both HYDRA and Ultron, but ended up realizing that they were fighting for the wrong side. They joined the Avengers, though Pietro doesn’t really feel like a part of the team. He can work well with them, and actually trusts some of them, but he’s still hurt and wary.
Around that time, the twins found HYDRA files about them and their origins, revealing that they were both mutants. Pietro was in a bit of a shock with two particular lines in his file: “Father: Lehnsherr, Erik. Siblings: Maximoff, Wanda. Dane, Lorna”. He had never imagined his family going beyond his twin and his adoptive parents, and he is still trying to figure out what that means for him and Wanda.
There just wasn’t anything to find and the fact that the government was sweeping this under the rug and trying not to make a big deal about it didn’t help. By now any evidence that might have existed was up in the air. It bothered him that no one except for a few were out looking for the missing. Though as he noted, he wasn’t alone and it had been a shift in the movements around him andthe quick left to right of his head before blue eyes landed on Pietro Maximoff.
“Pietro,” He acknowledge with a nod of his head; another enhanced individual who was surely feeling the loss of those similar to himself. His words didn’t bring muchhope though, they weren’t much luckier in finding anwser. Why else would the Avengers have sent out a deperate message. “Not much. Though I’m guessing you already know that.” Curious as to why he would bethere then. “The Team hasn’t been able to find any leads?” He infers by the earlier statement that they hadn’t but he wonders if anything has come up new elsewhere.
Pietro nodded, painfully aware of the lack of useful evidence. He took out his phone and opened the files, handing it to the Captain. “I don’t know how much they told you already, but this is all we have. Names, ages, a general idea of their abilities.” It was enough to make Pietro lose sleep, but not enough to get them anywhere. “We also have an estimative of the times and places where they disappeared. No noticeable correlation besides them all being mutants, alone at the time they vanished, some of them quite young. And nobody left any trace behind.” The people involved in the rescue efforts tried desperately to find patterns or anything else that could help solve this, or at least prevent new disappearances, but their attempts weren’t successful. “Even their scent randomly disappears, leading to nowhere. I’ve never seen anything like it.” Maybe the very lack of leads was a clue somehow, but it wasn’t one that Pietro could figure out.
Steve was back in New York heeding the global message for help by the Avengers and Justice League. But he also wasn’t heading to Avengers headquarters and announcing himself either. Though Gotham seemed to have the rise of disappearances, New York, despite what the government would have the mall believe, was not victimless. He was at the last reported site of an enhanced individual disappearing. He’d gone there for….well, he wasn’t sure. He didn’t expect to find some obvious anwser but the thing about New York, someone was always watching. Taking note of that thought, Steve glanced up and looked around the area to see who had taken a curiosity in what he was doing.
It had been a while since Pietro noticed his own tendency to wander back here. When he went for a run without any plans, just to spend some energy and feel the speed he loved so much, he often ended up near spots where mutants had gone missing. There was never anything new to find there, but it was the best way he had to feel a little closer to the vanished, to the people that they were failing. It felt like walking in circles, but even that was better than not moving when so many were at risk - people he loved, but also people he didn’t even know, lonely kids with nobody to keep them safe.
Even though Pietro expected no surprises going back to the place, he had a big one this time. When he stopped running, he was face to face with Steve Rogers himself. Pietro didn’t trust a ton of people, even among the supers, but Rogers was one of the few that made the cut. It was good to see that he was back, and already working on the case, it seemed. “I sure hope you’re luckier than the rest of us here, Cap. Find anything yet?” He asked, already expecting a negative answer. There was just nothing to be found, and Pietro was quite tired of facing that fact.
karen sat at a small table that was crowded with papers, clues, truly anything to figure out the situation at hand . out of habit she clicks her pen a few times shuffling through the stack of papers for some sort of pattern. all of it fit together like a puzzle piece but she was missing too much information to figure anything out — not that karen was much of a detective to begin with. she liked to solve things, she wanted to help but things were hardly ever that simple.
“ it doesn’t make sense. " not that there could be some valid understanding for the disappearances. “ this city just seems desperate to destroy itself sometimes. “
Pietro sat down in front of her, uninvited, checking the files of the missing mutants on his phone again. At this point, he did it more out of habit than with the intention of finding anything new. He had them all memorized anyway. “And lots of people seem desperate to destroy mutants too, but you’re right. This makes no sense. Nobody disappears like this, certainly not superpowerful people.” Pietro believed they were dealing with something unprecedented, something nobody was prepared for, and he didn’t like that at all.
“At least it’s only happening in the city. I hope it doesn’t start spreading.” It was hard to see a bright side in that mess, but just the thought of mutants all over the world starting to vanish, in places where there was no Xavier Institute and no stablished community to protect them or to keep tracks on who was taken... It remined him of his own past, trying to protect himself and his twin when they couldn’t even understand the things they could do, and all the dark places they were taken because of that.

Going after a lead alone was a terrible idea for a mutant at the moment, and Pietro knew that. He could almost hear his friends lecturing him about, but sometimes the urgency didn’t allow him to wait for backup. He saw something strange, some sort of light that shouldn’t be there, and a weird lack of noise that simply didn’t exist in NYC. Maybe it was nothing - a lot of bizarre stuff happened in the city all the time - but maybe it was an actual lead. He could have called someone before heading to that place, but he didn’t really want to implicate anyone else on it, in case this was the real deal.
He also couldn’t ignore the risk of losing an actual chance of progress if he took too long to get there, so he just ran, stopping a block away from the spot. The mutant walked at a normal pace until he got to the empty parking lot, not wanting to call to his speed. That late at night, it was hard to see a lot, but the streetlights allowed him to study the place. The strange light he saw earlier was gone now, but the silence there still seemed heavy and unnatural. Something about that area made his stomach turn, but maybe that was just his head playing tricks on him.
There was nothing to be seen there, nobody to interrogate and no obvious clues to study, but there was still something wrong, something he couldn’t quite place. Pietro stopped near a wall, where he found something shining on the ground. He kneeled to catch the object - a big silver ring with a gemstone that he couldn’t identify. Maybe he could ask Felicia about it later. It was probably just something that a random person lost when parking there, nothing important - but he couldn’t shake the small bit of hope that he got every time something was found.
Pietro got up and turned the ring around in his palm, looking for any inscriptions that could tell him something about the identity of it’s owner, but the only detail there was the blueish stone. He was about to put it in his pocket and continue the search when a sort of movement caught his eye. It was still awfully silent, and he wasn’t totally sure he saw it - a shadow moving in the shadows. “Anyone there looking for some speedy mutants?” Yeah, the dumbest thing Pietro could possibly say in that situation. He was almost proud of himself.
“ WELL YEAH, BUT, I’M not a mutant. so those people want nothing to do with me. i’m the best type of person to go in there. ” she points out with a raised brow. it only made sense to her. she didn’t have any powers, any special gifts that would make her stand out in the crowd. she was human, and the only threat she had were her smarts and her courage. and though she understands pietros frustrations, she’s not about to put an actual target in danger. “ i’m not gonna run the chance of you or anyone else getting taken! i’d never be able to live with myself if that happened. ” and she couldn’t allow her pride nor her ego to be bruised by accepting help, she’d grown up looking over her shoulder her whole life. stays silent as he speaks, lips pulling down into a slight frown. “ i’m sorry, i didn’t know it’d worry you so much. ” she does feel guilty for worrying them, just trying to be as much help as she can for those who are in danger. parts her lips to speak but is quick to close them after a moment. her hands falling to rest in her lap. she knows asking for help isn’t bad, so, after a long moment of silence she musters up the smallest smile. “ i have a lead on an abandoned warehouse if… you wanna help me. ”
Pietro kind of saw her point, but that wasn’t enough to convince him. “So, maybe you’re not a kidnapping target, but whoever is doing this probably has nothing against taking out anybody on their way. Nobody’s totally safe until we figure this out.” Her words were so similar to the worries going around in Pietro’s mind... He let out a sigh, thinking of just how much he wanted to say. “It’s alright, I guess we’re all worried all the time now. Trust me, I get the feeling... They’re taking mutant kids who are alone, MJ. I can’t get that out of my head either.” He confessed, and then got ready to go whatever she needed them to. “We have better chances of finding something if we’re not doing it alone anyway, so... Where is this warehouse? What do you have on it?” Any new lead meant a tiny spark of hope, even if every mission seemed to lead nowhere, time after time.
Pietro couldn’t help but smile. “Is that a promise or a threat? I'm not sure what to expect.” He was counting on the first option, though. Pietro liked the idea of Felicia always being there, unstoppable. “Guess I won’t stop unless you do, so you’re stuck with me forever or something.”
your friends aren’t my friends. why can’t you just accept that? — selina !
Oh, Selina Kyle, always such a charmer... “You’re going to really hurt my feelings if you keep talking like that, Selina.” He faked offense, using all of his dramatic abilities. She didn’t need to be so mean all the time, did she? It was probably just for sport. “My fragile little heart can’t handle such harsh words. You know the real friends are the crimes we... Nevermind, that can’t be right. How did that saying go again?”
got your text. you said you needed my help? — cassie !
"Okay, don’t be mad but it might be a little less urgent than it seemed.” Pietro handed Cassie a big bucket of popcorn and equilibrated the sweets in his hand. “We’re having an emergencial movie night, because everyone keeps telling me to stop running around and circles and you need to chill for once. Now please, help me find the most stupid movie the internet can give us.” Alternating between ignoring problems or just hitting them with his head was not very productive, but those were desperate times.
Pietro shrinked a bit when he heard Jean’s voice. He hated being caught, let alone being caught by her. He looked at the mess in front of him in the counter and tried to decide if it was still possible to save some of it, but somehow he had managed to burn parts of the pastry while also leaving the rest of it too raw to e consumed. “The internet said it would work. When has the internet ever lied?” He gave her his best puppy eyes, mentally completing ‘You know I’ve never done anything wrong ever in my life’, just in case she was peeking.
felicia was used to having people wrapped around her finger but she had to admit, she never once thought she’d have pietro maximoff falling in line. “hm, i’m inclined to believe you but… at the same time, i still completely doubt that.” of course, she’s teasing him at this point but felicia also knows that she can’t possibly be the only woman that pietro’s courting which is simply why she pays the commentary no mind. “i usually work alone, pietro — you’re one of very few people i’ve ever teamed up with. i think you should consider yourself pretty special.” she blinks in surprise when he’s pressing another kiss against her lips before smiling and slinking towards the door. with a flick of her thumb and the ring on her middle finger, felicia’s black cat suit is running up her arm and slipping onto her frame. she’s quick to use the retractable claws on her gloves to gently pick the lock from the door, smirking as it opens with a gentle hiss. “after you, speedy.”
Pietro smiled at the affirmation. “Oh, I guess I am super special, then. And you have to admit, we make a pretty good team.” He watched as she picked the lock with ease. He walked in, mirroring her smirk, and playfully took her hand to bring her along, closing the door softly behind them to not call any attention. “See? Took us less than five minutes between deciding to go for a walk and having this place all to ourselves.” The exposition started right at the front door, with fancy paintings and sculptures spread around them at seemly random patterns. The open floor gave them a full view of the gallery, with a reception table a few feet ahead and way more works of art as they walked ahead. “So, where would you like to start?” Pietro let go of her hand and took a few steps to the side, his eyes on a piece that could fit in the palm of his hand. It looked old and expensive, something that might as well belong in Felicia’s jewelry store. It gave him a cheesy idea, but cheesy usually worked. With a quick, almost invisible movement of his hands, he lifted the case, took the piece and put the case back down before any weight sensors could go off. He hid the piece in his pocket and hoped Felicia hadn’t noticed yet - that was a little surprise for later.
we should have taken my car, like i said, several times. — mj to pietro !
The suggestion of using cars when Pietro was around was offensive on a very particular, personal level, and MJ knew it, because he had told her so an annoying number of times. “Cars are slow, and big, and unpractical. You need places to park them, they call attention and they have to stop every time there’s a bunch of other cars or something else on the way.” He listed, all dramatic. “Cars are for taking naps, not for getting to places, certainly not in NYC, and not when I’m around.”
we’re the people who know things about the things most people don’t know about. ( from tony )
The fact that it was true said a lot about just how bad the situation looked. Right there, in the tower, they had some of the most resourceful people on earth, and yet... “That’s what worries me the most, Stark. If we know all of the things and we’re still completely clueless, than everyone is... Something worse than lost, to say the least.” That sense of helplessness was chewing at Pietro since the disappearances began, and seeing everyone else in the same state made him feel more and less frustrated at the same time.
it’s not up to them, it’s up to you. they’re gonna keep coming at you, they’re gonna keep knocking you down. you have to show them you can get back up. ( from bucky )
Pietro listened to Barnes, finding some comfort in his words. Bucky Barnes was someone who had gone through even darker times than Pietro himself, and he was still fighting, always. If he could do it, Pietro would keep finding ways to do the same. He had plenty of reasons to. “Ideally, I won’t be letting them reach me in the first, place, but if they do... Yeah, there’s no way I’m staying down. It may not always look it, but we have a lot to defend here.” Right there, in New York, Pietro now had more people to worry about than he would ever have dreamed during his time under Hydra. Not just the cause, the war that he could feel forming, but the individuals that would be fighting it by his side were reason enough to keep getting up. “If there’s one thing I know how to do, it’s to be stubborn as hell. They can keep coming for us, Barnes, but we’re not giving them an easy time.”
“ where do you get this implausible optimism? “ — scott
Pietro shrugged, taking the question into consideration. He wasn’t necessarily optimistic, he just did whatever he could to enjoy this shitty, ugly world without caring about anything beyond what he absolutely had to. “From my point of view, we are all screwed anyway. In fact, everything will blow in our faces at any moment, and there’s at least five bombs ticking around us at any given time... So I just ignore all that and live my best life as if nothing was wrong. You should try it sometime, put a smile on that pretty face of yours, Scoot.” Maybe Pietro’s way of dealing with stuff wasn’t the most healthy one, but it was working for him so far, so he didn’t mind.
