3 Spider Guard Drills to Improve Your Sweeping and Submissions - Grapplearts
The last time I had a filming session with my friend and training partner Ritchie Yip he showed something really cool… It was a series of 3 drills to improve your spider guard sweeps and submissions. The first drill is a relatively easy one to that develops hip mobility and leg dexterity. Spider guard is NOT a static position; as your opponent moves and tries to pass your guard you need to move too. And this drill will help you become better at that type of adaptive motion and legwork… The second drill builds on the first drill and then adds a sweep that transitions into a very slick armbar. Basically you’re drilling the transition from sweep directly into submission, which is one of the times that your opponent will be most vulnerable because he’s disoriented and out of balance… And then finally the third drill uses your opponent’s reaction to the second drill to set up a very powerful Kimura and/or omoplata attack. These are fun, easy, cool drills. If you’re new to spider guard then this would be a great place to start and become more familiar with the position. And if you’re already doing spider guard then these 3 drills will just make you that much more effective at it. Watch the 5 minute Youtube video below… P.S.
