Hypothermia Prevention and Treatment on the Battlefield: A Reference for Writers and Artists
Writer's Guide: Guns
I'm not the biggest fan of guns but I need them in my new WIP. Guns are probably one of the most used tools within most medias, besides being one of the most misused tools. So how can we write them? (my other post on guns focuses on the damage guns can do to a body so go there if that's what your looking for)
Part of a Gun
Action: The action is the brain of the gun. It is the part where you load, fire and eject the casings.
Stock: The stock is the handle of the gun. It is made up of the butt and the fore-end.
Barrel: The Barrel is the nose of the gun, the point where the bullets are fired from. Once a bullet is fired, it travels through the barrel and out the muzzle.
Muzzle: the muzzle is the hole the bullet exit from.
Bore: The bore is the inside of the barrel
Cylinder: The Cylinder holds the rounds in a revolver. It rotates as the gun is fired, pumping bullets into the chamber.
Grip: The Grip is where you hold gun.
Hammer: The Hammer on a revolver is a pin like instrument that strikes the primer which fires the bullet from the gun.
Clip: An clip stores the rounds of ammunition on a single line-like device that can be placed into magazine.
Magazine: The Magazine is a container that is spring activated, which can be detachable of fixed. It holds cartridges for a repeating firearm.
Trigger: The Trigger is what you pull yo fire the gun
Trigger Guard: The trigger guard is the loop that fits in front of the trigger to shield it from accidental firing.
Ammunition
Bullet: is the projectile that exits the gun.
Cartridges/Shell: This is the case, primer, propellant and projectile (bullet). The bullet sits in the cartridge case.
Shotshell: Are rounds of shotgun ammunition, containing pellets rather than a bullet.
Gun Safety
1. Keep the muzzle pointed downwards (not near your feet or others) when not using the gun.
2. Unload gun when not in use
3. Always check the safety.
4. Be sure of your aim. Don't fire blindly because you'll end up wasting bullets and you might hurt somebody
5. If the gun is jammed, don't look down the barrel to see why it's blocked. Point it away from you, open the action and remove the blockage safely.
6. Keep your barrel clean. Any excess cleaning fluid even dirt can mess up your shot or even cause blockages that can burst the barrel
7. Don't alter your gun in any way on your own. Even if you're a self proclaimed expert, don't touch the gun. You can fuck up the intergrity of the weapon.
How to Hold a Handgun
1. Your dominant hand should grip the gun, high along the back strap (back of grip). This will give you better leverage and handle the recoil better.
2. Place your other hand against the other side of the grip. Four fingers should sit snugly under the trigger, while your index finger should rest against the trigger itself.
How to Hande a Rifle/Long barrelled Gun
Hold the rifle with two hands, hold the grip of the rifle with your dominant hand. Your fingers should wrap about the base of the rifle, under the trigger guard.
Your non-dominant hand should be wrapped firmly around the base of the grip. Holding the gun right will help reduce recoil and ensure better control.
How to fire a Gun
Align your sights. Your gun has a sight at the front and at the rear. Aim and align your sights through these points. There should be equal space between the sights.
Set your sight. When youâre aiming a gun, youâre you are looking through the front sight, the rear sight, and your target. When you're aiming at the target, it will look blurry. The sights should but clear.
Press rather than pull the trigger. You should squeeze it, applying constant pressure until the weapon fires.
Things every Writer should know about Guns
Hollow Point Bullets are not more deadly than full metal jacket bullets. Though a hollow point will cause damage, full metal bullets are actually more likely to over-penetrate and move when with the flesh, causing a more devastating wound.
Guns are really loud. How loud exactly? Most heavy duty guns could cause hearing loss. It simply isn't possible for two characters to have a lovely chat while firing weapons.
Rifles with scopes make it easier to shoot but they won't make a beginner a sudden genius marksman. Scopes help but they don't perform miracles.
Shotguns shoot shells not bullets.
Your character should not tuck a just fired handgun into their waistband or else they will get a nasty burn.
Silencers or better yet, suppressors do not silence your shots. They actually lower the sound by a few decibels.
Don't have your character fire gun sideways. They will fuck up their wrist and look stupid while doing it.
Most rifles and shotguns aren't pump action
If you drop your gun, if won't fire itself.
The clip and magazine are two different things. They can't be used as synonyms.
When somebody is shot, they don't go flying back. They crumple on the spot.
The exit wound of a bullet is larger than the entry point.
Most beginners will have trouble with recoil. Bloody noses and black eyes are common is one doesn't know what their doing.
Deadly Poisons to Use in Your Next Story: Part Two
Hello, hello again! Here I am and back with part two of deadly poisons. It was suggested to me, that maybe I should incorporate images of the plants in my post, so incorporate images I shall. So letâs dive right in!
Disclaimer: I am not responsible for any decisions or actions you decide to take regarding this information. This is all in good fun for writing. I am in no shape or form teaching anyone how to commit murder.
1. Henbane: is sometimes known as the âdevilâs eyes,â due to the black colored stigma (center of the flower). This plant was used in witchcraft and black magic. It was said during these time periods that the flowers would look and smell like death. Do not confuse henbane with belladonna. All parts of the plant is considered highly toxic. Smelling the toxic leaves causes dizziness, stupor, insanity, dry mouth, dilated pupils, restlessness, hallucinations, delirium leading to a potential coma, and eventually death. The medicinal uses of this medicine include being used as a painkiller, anesthetic, treatment of Parkinsonâs and rheumatic aches and pains.
Toxicity: 99
Medicinial Use: 80
Mortality Rate: 79
Temptation to Use: 13
2. Arum Maculatum: also known as the cuckoo pint, or ladies and swords, or Adders Tongue. It is found growing in the woodlands and hedgerows. It is one of the most toxic wild plants and is said to smell of rotten meat. If eaten is can cause irritation of the mouth and tongue, swelling of the throat, difficulty breathing, burning pain, and upset stomach, as well as intense convulsions and death. This plant has been used to treat diarrhea, sore throats, rheumatic pain, as well as removing freckles and blemishes.
Toxicity: 87
Medicinal Use: 70
Mortality Rate: 80
Temptation to Use: 1
3. Opium Poppy: scientifically known as papaver somniferum. These plants have brightly colored petals, but do not let that fool you. Opium is the second biggest killer. Being poisoned by opium can cause anyone to behave erratically, sudden lost of appetite and fall into a stupor or potentially even a coma. Eventually resulting in death. Talk about looks can kill! Yet, despite all this this plant is also the basis for many effective painkillers such as morphine and codeine.
Toxicity: 75
Medicinial Use: 87
Mortality Rate: 81
Temptation to Use: 91
4. Salvia Divinorum: it is also knowns as magic mint, Sally-D, Divinerâs Sage, Ska Maria Pastora, Seerâs Sage, Sheperdessâs Herb, Lady, Sally, Purple Sticky, and Incense Special. It is a very powerful and fast acting hallucinatory herb that has become very popular among teenagers. It can mimic the effects of LSD and ecstasy, though its effects only last about eight minutes. It is not safe to consume as it leaves the user mumbling, giggling, screaming, gasping, synthesia, and confused. The DEA find it harmful for anyone who would use it. It is often used in stead of marijuana. It can be used for digestive problems, sore throats, and colds.
Toxicity: 30
Medicinial Use: 47
Mortality Rate: 64
Temptation to Use: 51
5. Datura: also known as Jimsonâs Weed. It is a wild plant that grows all across the U.S. Itâs pure white color will try and lure you in, as well as its intoxicating scent. This plant however, is a powerful hallucinogen and can render you incapacitated, creating the appearance that you are awake. It is considered a nightshade. This plant is used to calm people to sleep, but if the proper doses arenât used it can relax you to the point of death.
Toxicity: 53
Medicinal Use: 24
Mortality Rate: 38
Temptation to Use: 81
Here ya, go! Deadly Poisons including images! I think I might do a part three of this, but I have yet to decide on that. If you havenât checked out part one yet, you should! Bee's Master List of (mostly) Indie Recommendations under 30 dollars
Some of these games may have upsetting content such as suicides, death, eating disorders, etc. If you're concerned about these themes, please ask me or research the game. I've tried to list trigger warnings for anything particularly upsetting such as suicides but this is not an exhaustive list and goes entirely off of my memory but I'm always happy to answer any questions.
Farm Together: an adorable farm building game, kind of similar to phone games in that you have to wait for real time to pass to do things but it can be very satisfying to build up a cute farm. Can also be played with friends.
On all platforms
Price: 20 USD
Firewatch: A story/exploration game about a man alone in the California wilderness who watches for fires. Touching, surprising, and lovely, I love this game a LOT.
On all platforms
Price: 20 USD
Gone Home: The same kind of game as Firewatch, but you're a young woman who has come home to find your family gone and you're left to explore the house and figure out what happened while you were gone. Seems like a horror game but it's actually not. Again, very touching and moving story.
On all platforms
Price: 15 USD
Life is Strange, Life is Strange Before the Storm, and Life is Strange 2: This series will rip your heart out, stomp on it, and shove it back in your chest. These games are amazing, heartbreaking, and full of some of the hardest choices I've ever made. Trigger warning for suicide. Slight NSFW warning: some partial nudity and mentions of sex
On all platforms
Prices: from 20-30 USD
Tell me Why: Made by the same people as Life is Strange, everything I said about those games applies here. Has some horror elements but isn't a true horror game. If you're easily freaked out like me, you might be unsettled a few times but it's worth pushing through.
On Xbox and PC
Price: 20 USD
Night in the Woods: Would you like an existential crisis? Here's one in game form. This one gets a little unsettling at times but isn't a true horror game. This game makes you think about our place in the universe and deals with the heavy topic of depression so it's not for everyone. If you can deal with those topics though, it's a very deep and interesting game.
On all platforms
Price: 20 USD
Slime Rancher: You have slimes. You ranch them. It's adorable, addicting, and so so much fun. The slimes are cute as heck and I had so much fun exploring the world and building up my ranch.
On all platforms except switch
Price: 20 USD
Tacoma: What would you do if you were trapped on a space station with no hope of survival? This is made by the same people who made Gone Home and is a touching story following the last days of the crew of a space station who are doomed to die. You relive their last moments through video taped holograms. Wonderfully acted and an amazing story. Slight NSFW warning: Some making out and mentions of sex as well as "toys" that can be found if you look hard enough.
On all platforms except switch
Price: 20 USD
Coffee talk: You're a barista making coffee in a magical world. Serve drinks and chat with people about their problems. The story is cute, interesting, and the characters are so full of personality. Slight NSFW warning: mentions of sexual things.
On all platforms
Price: 14 USD
Undermine: A roguelike dungeon crawler. You're a miner who travels into the Undermine to fight monsters, mine gold, and rescue people. Can be difficult but is very satisfying when you complete another objective. You use your pickaxe to both defend yourself and fight the various monsters of the Undermine.
On all platforms
Price: 20 USD
Children of Morta: Very similar to Undermine as far as gameplay goes but the story is that a family of warriors is tasked with fighting back the darkness that threatens their world. You can play as various members of the family and each has unique abilities you can level up and learn. Again, somewhat difficult but very worth it if you can power through and grind some levels for the characters. A broad trigger warning for this one because it can be very dark.
On all platforms
Price: 22 USD
Donut County: You control a hole that consumes the town. Yup, that's basically it. It's very satisfying with some light puzzle elements and honestly I don't have much more to say except it's fun!
On all platforms including phones
Price: 13 USD
Haven: This game is beautiful and the two main characters are so in love and so adorable and I love them. You follow the story of a couple who has escaped their home world and arranged marriages and landed on an entirely new world, but they're not safe for long. It's not very difficult and there's options to make combat even easier so it's a pretty chill time. Slight NSFW warning: partial nudity and mentions of sex.
On all platforms
Price: 25 USD
Ikenfell: Even if you don't like combat, this game has awesome accessibility options to make combat a breeze. You can even skip it entirely if you like. You come looking for your sister at the magical school she attends only to discover you suddenly have magic yourself?? Also the world is in danger?? Uh oh! This game has such awesome LGBT representation, I can't recommend it enough even if you aren't LGBT. There's some strong Harry Potter vibes here but so much better.
On all platforms
Price: 20 USD
Moving out: People need things moved out of their houses and you're the person for the job! Can be played alone or co-op, this game is plain dumb fun. Chuck furniture through windows, off balconies, however you need to in order to get it on your truck in the time limit.
On all platforms
Price: 15 USD
Night Call: Taxi drivers hear all the best gossip and you're gonna need it to solve the mystery of the serial killer who attacked you but left you alive. Drive around town and pick up clients to make money and gather information. Obviously there's a serial killer involved but I'm also going to put a trigger warning right here for suicide.
On all platforms
Price: 20 USD
Spiritfarer: Let me start off by saying this game is about death. All kinds of death. If that's not your thing, this isn't your game. However, despite it being about death, it's more a celebration of death than a grim, dark game. It's beautiful, it's touching, it'll make you cry. The gameplay is an exploration platformer with some building elements. This game has stuck with me in the best way possible and was my best game of 2020, no joke.
On all platforms
Price: 30 USD
What Remains of Edith Finch: Like Spiritfarer, this game is all about death and is about the darker side of death. Suicide and the death of sometimes very young children is present here. It's an amazing game about a cursed family and your desperate search for answers as the titular Edith Finch. In the same vein as Gone Home and Tacoma, the gameplay is mostly walking around looking at things but it often does that brilliantly well.
On all platforms
Price: 20 USD
Cozy Grove: You are a spirit scout! It's like a girl/boy scout but for ghosts. After you're stranded in Cozy Grove, you have to try and help the ghosts of this island find peace. It's absolutely adorable but fair warning, there are some performance issues at this current time (April 17, 2021). I still recommend this game because it's so cute and fun to build your little camp and discover the stories of these trapped ghosts.
On all platforms
Price: 15 USD
Not Tonight and Papers Please: I'm putting these together because they're very similar. The premises are basically the same: you check IDs/passports/tickets and choose to admit or reject people based on whether their paperwork is in order. It's much more fun than it can be described and has some difficult decisions and multiple endings to get based on what you do and who you choose to admit or not. Trigger warning for political themes? Both games are pretty political and heavy, not exactly a happy stroll in the park. Slight NSFW warning for Papers Please: partial nudity (full nudity can be toggled in options if I remember correctly)
Papers Please is only on PC
Not Tonight is on switch and PC
Papers please is 10 USD
Not Tonight is 20 USD
Littlewood: You're the hero of the world! You defeated the Evil Wizard! Too bad you don't remember all of that. Actually, you don't remember ANYTHING. The world is still reeling after the almost end of the world and it's up to you to be the hero again and rebuild everything! You rebuild the town of Littlewood by chopping trees, mining, making friends, and farming. You can also decorate your townspeoples houses, your own house, and the whole town. You can even get married to almost anyone! I can't state enough how much I love this game, it's the perfectly chill, addicting game I think everyone needs.
On PC and Switch
Price: 15 USD
Moonlighter: Extremely similar to Undermine but a little better in my opinion. Explore the dungeons and gather items to sell in your shop to build up your store and the town. Cute art, fun gameplay.
On all platforms
Price: 20 USD

I was getting pretty fed up with links and generators with very general and overused weapons and superpowers and what have you for characters so:
Here is a page for premodern weapons, broken down into a ton of subcategories, with the weaponâs region of origin.Â
Here is a page of medieval weapons.
Here is a page of just about every conceived superpower.
Here is a page for legendary creatures and their regions of origin.
Here are some gemstones.
Here is a bunch of Greek legends, including monsters, gods, nymphs, heroes, and so on.Â
Here is a website with a ton of (legally attained, donât worry) information about the black market.
Here is a website with information about forensic science and cases of death. Discretion advised.Â
Here is every religion in the world.Â
Here is every language in the world.
Here are methods of torture. Discretion advised.
Here are descriptions of the various methods used for the death penalty. Discretion advised.
Here are poisonous plants.
Here are plants in general.
Feel free to add more to this!
An exceedingly useful list of lists for writers.

How to put âwrote fan-fictionâ on your rĂŠsumĂŠ:
Leveraged an inventory of established fictional character and setting elements to generate a disruptive custom-curated narrative entertainment asset.
I worked in HR, handling applications and interviews, and if someone turned in that string of techno babble nonsense, I would have rejected them out of hand.
A resume doesnât need to sound fancy or overly technical, it needs to tell us why we should hire you.
âIndependent novelist/writerâ is more than sufficient here. If you want to express the skills that fan fiction taught you, something like, âcreative writing, editing, and publication,â will get you a lot further than⌠Whatever that just was.
A resume should be tailored to the position, if you can afford the time and energy for that. But if not, then just think about what writing got fandom taught you. How to respond to criticism, how to present a professional pubic face, how to correct punished mistakes, creative thinking, project planning, persuasion via emotional leverage, html formatting, office suite fluency.
There are a lot of actual, marketable skills that go into fan fiction.

Hey, kids! Just remember, your hobbies are also your skillsets!
SIGNAL BOOST!!!
me realizing my experiences with sewing have been a lie this whole goddamn time:
I donât know about human surgeons, but thatâs a suture pattern I use to close skin all the time and you can see why.
The slip stitch (or invisible stitch) was created to hide seams and later used by surgeons.
My cousin is a surgeon and was sewing something and used that stitch and then froze and said âWait this isnât a person.â
Grandma said âWe used it first keep going.â
remember not to embroider the patient
A while ago, some people asked me to explain D&D and other RPGs⌠so of course I had to make it into an infographic!
This is by no means a comprehensive guide. The game can be as simple or complex as you want, but there ARE some pre-established basics you should know about - and those are best discovered on your own terms!
Some resources to help you get started:Â
Watch/listen:
â Rusty Quill Gaming Podcast - a ttrpg game in the Pathfinder system. Beginner friendly! Learn how to play along with the players!
â Â Critical Role - a D&D game played by voice actors - Incredibly famous! Highly praised! Both videos and podcasts available.
â Â The Adventure Zone - a TTRPG podcast by the McElroy brothers. The players are new, but the rules are bent a lot, so make of that what you will.
Read/learn the rules:
đ D&D 5e Playerâs Handbook - pdf
đ Basic Introduction to Character Races - website
đ Overview of Character Classes - website
How-to and Tutorials:
đ˛ Rolling a character - YouTube video
đ˛ How combat works - YouTube video
đ˛ Being a good player - YouTube video
And last but not leastâŚ
How To Play D&D Online! - YouTube Video
***
Of course, there are tons of other resources - endless writeups, dozens of YouTube videos and blogposts, and entire subreddits dedicated to this information. The important thing is to take things one at a time. Or not - just dive right in! Most seasoned D&D players are thrilled when others want to join them on their adventures and will be happy to help a new player find their tabletop legs.Â

Pro tip: If you copy and paste a link that said âno free articlesâ into a private/incognito browser, it will let you read the whole thing.
also if u press the âescâ (escape) key on ur laptop before the page fully loads, it wonât load any pop-ups blocking u from reading. if the article has images, then this method sometimes does not u see them. but! the words will be fine :)
If the site is particularly badly designed, you might just be able to delete the overlay itself. Right click > Inspect element and delete the line of HTML (itâll be highlighted automatically)
hey kids there is a website called outline.com that will let you read from pretty much any news site with a paywall for free
i learned that each woman spends approximately $5,600 on her period over her lifetime (x)
this reminded me of the reason why i bought reusable menstrual pads in the first place
im so happy with my collection
where did you get them? theyre so cute I love!
@cerenae i got them here! i recommend 10/10!
Last period was the first time I didnât use any non reusable products!
REUSABLE???? THEREâS REUSABLE ONES?????
I love reusable ones! Using them almost a year now!
WHAT!!!!
BROOOO
WHATTT
hop aboard the reusable menses product train yâall! boss up your coochie!! all joking aside though, iâve saved money, no more cramping or inner thigh rashes from the dioxins and other weird chemicals and (pandemic related) fewer reasons to take impromptu trips out of the house. win-win all around.
i bought their trial pack (one of each pad size + pouch) just to see how these pads are like and just a day after using, i bought a starter pack (2 liner, 3 regular, Â 2 overnight + pouch)
i included a photo below beside my switch for comparison of how big the xl and overnight pads are (i love using both for for nighttime use). daily, i use my regular pads and when working out/post-period, i use the liners.
honestly these are such amazing investments. i cant see myself using commercial pads ever again. they dont stink nor leak and you just have to make sure youre not wearing lace or any flimsy underwear so theyâll stay in place. i totally recommend this!
OMG WHAT THERE ARE REUSABLE ONES????
PSA I JUST SAW THEY NOW HAVE ANIMAL CROSSING PATTERNS IM SCREAMING RIGHT NOW
the amazing part is that it now comes with two buttons to snap it tighter!!!
I AM SO IN LOVE!! HEREâS THE LINK IF YOU GUYS ARE INTERESTED!!!!
Editing my reblog - there are other companies you can get these from which donât donate to dodgy causes. From the original linked companyâs website:
No thanks.
I personally get mine from here, which is a UK based company, and I canât find any info on them that says they donate to causes I donât support, but itâs always worth checking where your moneyâs going.
Hereâs a link to more options, plus instructions on making your own.
Also @moonlightmarathonâ seems to be a sockpuppet account for that brand, because their entire blog consists of them promoting it (the weirdly phallic posts about plastic straws are made by the same company.)
The websiteâs testimonials section focuses on their Tumblr promotional activity, which is⌠dodgy.
This post, which OP seems to have made in good faith, essentially got hijacked by an account clearly created solely to promote this brand and became an advert for Cariona, which is dumb, because there are way better brands making the same product.
For example, there are many people who make them on Etsy, and thereâs also this article comparing different brands, not to mention the ones I linked in my reblog above. Fuck Cariona.
Archery information for writers that no one asked for but probably some of you need and I like talking about archery, so here it is.
when you put an arrow on the string, the verb is called ânockingâ i.e. eyes glued on the target, he nocked the arrow
also the part of the arrow that gets put onto the string is called the nock. depending on the type of arrow this can be a piece of plastic glued into the arrow, or with wood or bamboo arrows it can be carved into the shaft of the arrow itself
you do not close an eye when aiming or shooting; you see better with both eyes open.
everyone has a dominant eye that more naturally your brain focuses with. that determines whether you are right or left handed when shooting, and doesnât necessarily correlate to whether the person is right or left handed in anything else
so if youâre writing a character who has difficulty seeing out of one eye, take that into account when they are shooting
if they are right eye dominant, they hold the bow with their left hand and draw the string with their right. if they are left eye dominant, they hold the bow with their right hand and draw the string with their left
if they shoot left, the quiver sits on their left side/hip/thigh. shoot right - right side quiver.
there are several different ways to draw, if you are writing something historical or in a specific region, then do research on that style of archery. but for a generic place to start that is a more universal way of drawing a bow, here are some things to include
the chin stays down. raising your chin will fuck up your aim
the pointer finger on your draw hand rests on the side of your chin/jaw, and the string of the bow will touch the tip of the archerâs nose
weight is on the balls of your feet, leaning slightly forward off your heels
if it is an older bow/barebow, there is not usually a place for the arrow to rest on the bow. this means the arrow rests on the archerâs hand. if they are not wearing a glove on that hand, the fletchings (thatâs the feathers on the arrow) will more than likely slice their hand when firing. this scars.
so if youâre wanting to describe someone observing and archerâs hands (hands are hot, donât @ me) they would see a silver scar about halfway between the pointer finger knuckle and palm of the personâs hand. (turn your hand vertical and trace down the length of your pointer toward your thumb and stop next to the knuckle. that spot there.)
most archers wear something to protect their fingers on the hand that draws the bow. even with that, they have callouses. without it, a lot of callouses, scars, and blisters.
most common draw uses three fingers on the string: pointer, middle, ring. the arrow sits between the pointer and middle. just like where the draw point is, this is not universal and do research if youâre doing something culturally important.
barebow means that the bow is bare of any instruments. no sight, no weights, etc. the most basic/traditional form of bow
a recurve bow is anything where the tips of the bow curve back around forward, away from the archer
a compound is what you think of as a modern hunting bow, and is recognisable by having wheels at the ends and three strings
arrows have three fletchings that form a triangle, the point faces the archer so that the flat of the arrow will pass the flat of the bow on release. the arrow sits on the side of the bow facing the archer
archers with a larger/raised chest will sometimes where a chest protect so that the string does not catch when firing (this is regardless of gender, i know several cis-men who need it as well)
string can also catch on the forearm that is holding the bow and creates bruises and welts if you donât wear a protector. modern ones are small plastic and cover just the spot, with elastic holding it in place. traditional ones are leather and wrap all the way around, lacing up on the back of your arm like a corset.
there is literally so much more, but i feel like this is plenty to get you started, and as always, feel free to drop an ask in my box if you need something more!
This is SUPER helpful! Thank you!
