‘XX’ (8x02) Detailed Thoughts

Note: This is long. Over 2,500 words long. You’ve been warned.

I didn’t even know if I wanted to write this after today’s ep. But then I guess if I was going to express my disappointment at what happened, I had better write out why that was so and unpick what’s happening both on the screen and behind the scenes with the show and it’s direction for next season. But overall, my thoughts immediately and my thoughts now, hours later, are not very different and pretty negative. So if you don’t want to read that (and I would totally understand, given the fandom reaction, because it can get very draining to read negativity), I’d just skip this and move along. Maybe even unfollow my blog for the near future.

A Mac & Harm A Day turned 2 today! Ha! I haven't been here in ages... but at least this anniversary got me here, and a very interesting coincidence is that I watched a couple of JAG episodes last night, for the first time in AGES. Unfortunately, I'm working through Season 10 (for he first time) and the episodes were 'Straits of Malacca' and 'JAG: San Diego'. I couldn't believe my eyes! Mac acting all coy around this dreadful, annoying Vukovic dude. Naaaahhh. Not cool. But that aside, it's nice to be here after so long!

It is interesting that part of the fandom is so coded or shaped by the usual standards of television-relationships that can’t be steady or happy, that fall into the usual pattern of break-up-and-get-back-together that they want that imposed on Caskett for no other reason bar the fact they don’t know how to process a relationship that progresses as per normal.

Personally, it is refreshing to see a show and a writing team tackle a relatively angst-free relationship and its development without covering the hoary old boring ground every other show covers. Perhaps the elements of the fandom who want to see that cliche traversed could get their fix from those shows?

For me, having your main couple break-up after getting together, then teasing the ship anyway is a primary indicator of poor writing and an inability to forge tension or capture audience attention without resorting to the lowest common denominator. Alongside continually teasing ships without bringing them together, it is a huge reason I quit watching shows. ‘Chuck’ with its ludicrous amnesia arc at the end was a prime example of the showrunners burning their fans. Similarly, I quit watching ‘Rookie Blue’ when it became apparent that they wouldn’t keep Sam/Andy together (and the rest of the characters went to shit). I’m not even going to touch upon Shonda Rhimes’s shows.

It is no surprise to me that ‘Castle’ has built an audience year upon year (relative to changing viewing habits) because it steers away from the writing norms adopted by other shows, and offers an alternative to the usual soapy shenanigans taking place elsewhere. If it went down that well-trodden route instead, I would bet a large chunk of that audience may well disappear, with the show following them off the screen.

5 random facts about me....

So 100years-to-live was kind enough to think of me for this meme... here goes:

1. I'm a lawyer, but I haven't practised law since I left my last firm about 5 years ago.

2. I have a serious phobia of frogs, dating back to that fateful rainy day on which I had to run through a road that was completely covered in frogs.

3. I was born and raised in one of the world's most dangerous cities, and I loved it. Still do. At the moment though, I live on a tiny island in the Atlantic Ocean. It's gorgeous in terms of natural scenery - our sunrises and sunsets are breathtaking. But, for someone who grew up around a lot more activity, it's also boring.

4. Speaking of growing up around a lot of activity, I have five siblings - three older and two younger. Growing up, we always had at least another six relations and/or family friends living with us at any point in time. It was... interesting... fun, crazy, frustrating, and the training in people skills was simply invaluable.

5. I love travel. It is one of my favourite things to do. For me, exploring the world freely and meeting new people is one of the best modes of education there is.

2. Favorite female warrior: Sarah Connor, because she’s a reluctant warrior, and a very human, flawed one, but still so compelling.

17. A lady you root for when no one else does: It’s gotta be Sherry Palmer (‘24’) - okay, so I didn’t actually root for her, but she was so single-minded, driven and resolute that I often felt like applauding her. Penny Johnson Jerald played the hell out of that character.

21. A lady you want to remove from her world and place into another fandom: Kalinda Sharma (‘The Good Wife’) would be a really fun character to have in Olivia’s team on ‘Scandal’. I think she would fit right in.
