Artist profile: Elizabeth Eadie

Our November designer of the month is Elizabeth Eadie. This Washington DC-based painter and graphic designer truly draws from her heart. Her feminine and minimalist designs are on our custom watch platform. Learn more about Elizabeth and her work below:

Tell us about yourself.

I'm Elizabeth Eadie, a painter and graphic designer based in Washington, DC. I've painted and drawn since I was a child, much to the credit of my grandmother, an artist herself. For a long time, painting was a hobby, something I only did as gifts for friends and family. After working at Disney Consumer Products, where I learned so much about licensing and product development, I decided to take the leap and start my own line of products. I began the business in 2010 with just a few patterns and have been expanding ever since!

Tell us more about your art and what inspired you to pursue it? 

Social Proper is something I do for myself before anything else so the designs are very much a reflection of me. I think about the glitter stripe and how it's feminine but strong and a little bit unexpected ... this pretty much sums up the brand itself. It was the first pattern I designed and its success informs a lot of strategic and creative decisions. 

How did this collaboration with May28th come about?

As I was expanding Social Proper to a select group of licensees, I was looking for a partner in the wearables market and found May28th. They have the distribution to retailers that align with the brand, reach the same market, and, frankly, make really cute products. It just seemed like such an easy fit!

What are your future plans?  

I plan to continue to grow Social Proper through seasonal releases (much like the apparel and stationery markets). I'm exploring new product lines (folder, iphone case, notebook) but am being selective and strategic. I want to grow at a pace where I can still control all of the creative development so I'm taking my time to find the right partners. I've not been afraid to try new directions and I don't see that changing any time soon. The Fall 2014 patterns rolled out last week and will be appearing over the blog in the next few weeks. The 2014 Seasonal design set is ready to roll out right after. I'm also planning to bring a retail experience back to the site in 2015.
