#utlastrong Repost: Teacher pay in LAUSD is annualized allowing us to be paid 12 months a year even though we only work 10 months. However, this doesn't mean we get paid for summer break. Here's how it breaks down. We are paid for 204 days a year at 6 hours a day...although ALL of us are at school and work for more than that a day. Monthly we get paid for 17 days of work. (204/12) no matter how many school days there are. Those striking DO NOT GET PAID! While on strike we lose 1 of our 204 days per day we are out. Basically we'll lose more each day than we would have actually received in a normal paycheck. Your teacher/counselor/therapist/etc friends are taking this hit for the benefit of public education here in Los Angeles and all over the country. Aside from worrying about our students and their education (after all most of us consider our students like our own children) we are also worried about paying our bills and feeding our families. So reach out to your striking friends... pack them a lunch... have them and their families over for dinner... send a grocery store gift card... drop off some snacks and water at picket sites... it doesn't have to be something big. Anything helps our moral. Striking educators will be at their respective school sites each day from 7 to 830ish and again from 2 to 4ish. When I was in Tijuana I met with organizers at @cocutlgbti Comunidad Cultural de Tijuana that are in the development stages of creating a shelter for LGBTQI migrants. They are looking for longer term funding sources because the issues brought to light by the most current migrant Caravan are not going away. This is an EXODUS and a crisis made worse by failed U.S. intervention, support of horrible governments and failed immigration policies. Today is my last day in Tijuana (and playas de Tijuana). I raised about $350 dollars which I am dividing between people I know and have met here in Tijuana who are doing good deeds and will continue to do the work on the ground. I also brought supplies collected in Oakland and hope to travel with a group upon my return. We’ll see. If not I will just come back when I finalize my quarter in a week or so. More than half of the folks I’ve spoken to are volunteering with queer and trans migrants which also includes whoever feels safe with that group who may or may not specifically identify. I’ll check in with more details. Sorry I haven’t taken many photos cause I’ve just been trying to figure out who is who and what is what but I’ll share what I have.
