While searching in YouTube, I stumbled upon this appearance by Jamie Foxx on the Tonight Show. The man is a fantastic singer! I knew he could sing but his musical range and vocabulary is amazing. Also, he's pitch perfect even when he's singing with someone else and with a band while playing keyboard. AND improvising. Corden is no small potatoes either, he's such an underrated performer in his own right.

It’s the Women Who Clean Up

The latest 2021-2022 Fox/Warner Brothers 10-episode series about an illegal immigrant worker from the Philippines embroiled in the criminal world in Las Vegas has a terrible name. The Cleaning Lady. I know, it’s boring.

But she’s also a highly trained surgeon, I quickly add whenever I try to sell the series’ premise to someone else, but no, it’s not a medical drama. It’s hard to convince someone to look past their own assumptions and give this series a chance. Which is a shame because it’s 2022 and we finally have a primetime series that addresses issues like the immigration crisis in US, inequalities in the healthcare system, and the rights of minority women, from a minority woman’s point of view. It’s also refreshing to see an Asian actress cast in a lead role that doesn’t involve martial arts or delivering lines with sexy innuendo.

In almost every episode, it’s the women who are taking matters into their own hands and cleaning up the mess in their lives. The “cleaning lady” isn’t just the help, it’s a can-do attitude all immigrant women are familiar with. It’s doing whatever it takes just to get by in life, and sometimes that involves making tough choices and doing something that goes against your personal beliefs.

It certainly doesn’t hurt the series that the romance between the two lead characters is electrifying and compelling (#armony), but the real reason I want The Cleaning Lady to be renewed is the opportunity to break down stereotypes and continue to tell the stories that have remained invisible until now.

I admit I did not watch many of the movies that were released in 2021, but the best one I saw was I'm Your Man, a bittersweet romance between a scientist and a robot enabled with AI. Not a logline one naturally expects from an indie movie. Yet, even though this concept of love between human and machine has been dealt with in many many other films, this movie manages to find something new to say and to surprise this jaded moviegoer.

There are many reasons why I love Resident Alien, one of the funniest sci-fi shows right now. Yes, the show's attraction is partly due to the comic presence of Alan Tudyk who plays the stranded alien, but more than that, the supporting cast of extremely relatable characters makes this show less about alien-ness and more about the stories and struggles that makes us more human.

I love the character Asta. Her human superpower is compassion for others, which unfortunately eclipses the compassion she offers herself for her own failings.

There's a scene in the episode End of the World as We Know It in season 1 which sums up D' Arcy Bloom, the town's lush bartender and Asta's bestie. She's trapped inside a glacier crevice and hanging by the rope she manages to secure to the crevice walls before an avalanche knocks her unconscious. It's a powerful moment when she realizes she needs to put aside her past psychological traumas and climb out of the dark hole in order to save herself and her friends.

Max and Sahar, the precocious children of Resident Alien are not overly stereotypical sweet and innocent. They are the Mulder and Scully of this alien TV show, the brave truthseekers who are ignored even though they often know more than the adults in town.

Resident Alien does not abandon all the run-of-the-mill sci-fi alien tropes. Instead it deep dives, twists and turns them into explorations of what it means to be human. CAN'T WAIT FOR SEASON 2!!!!

Her energy and passion just radiates right out of the screen. Brought tears to my eyes.
