The Fox and The Shepard
this is story based on my DnD character and it takes place in the world of Exandria from critical role. The story is mainly a prologue to her adventures talking about her life growing up in Syngorn, but eventually I would like to bleed it into the campaign and write about her adventures during it. I do not know if I will continue to post the story on here or choose another website, but for now I will post it on here. I hope you enjoy reading it as I have become very attached to my character.
The Fox and The Shepard. Prologue Chapter 1: Faithful Connection Syngorn, 822PD.
“Lady Sonia!” one of my maids shouted as she walked past the doorway of my father’s office. I snickered from under his desk taking great enjoyment in the fact that they had yet to find me. Of course, I knew they would never check here as they weren’t allowed to enter my father’s office, I also wasn’t allowed, but it was the perfect hiding spot so how could I pass up the opportunity to sneak my way in when I saw his door was slightly open. I stretched my legs out from under his large wooden desk clicking my blue sparkly shoes together that matched my fluffy blue dress that was equally as sparkly, while humming a song I had heard my mother singing a few days ago. I felt a strong yank causing me to shout out as I was dragged out from under the desk sliding across the reddish colored wood. “There you are.” a rough voice said all lack of amusement devoid of his voice as his yellow-colored eyes stared daggers at me. It was my father’s assistant Zaatar, a rather large half-orc with washed green colored skin, black hair that he had pulled back into a bun, and large tusks coming from his mouth. “You know you aren’t supposed to be in here.” He scolded me.
“I wasn’t doing anything.” I whined as he picked me up off the floor setting me down on my feet. “I was just playing hide and seek.” I gave him one of my brightest smiles, however he still didn’t look amused as he crossed his arms over his chest causing the already tight suit and shirt to wrinkle a bit around the folds of his arms.
“You do know that in order to play hide and seek that the people you are playing with have to know they are playing?” he said, I bit my lip as I looked down at the ground. He let out a small sigh as he got down to eye level with me. “My lady you are eight years old now, you can’t keep playing these games in order to get out of attending things you wish to avoid.”
“But I don’t want to go! It will be boring, and I don’t understand what people are talking about!” I shouted slamming my foot down on the ground as if trying to make a point, but really, I was just throwing tantrum. I could see in Zaatar eyes that he was starting to lose a bit of patient with me as he took a deep breath before continuing to speak.
“Your parents believe that these simple events will be good for you to experience. You are still young, but it won’t be long before you will be required to attend much more important events with very important people in Syngorn. This is your parents’ way of teaching you how to act accordingly.” He said, I let out a huff as I dramatically crossed my arms over my chest puffing up my cheeks in a pout. Zaatar seemed to think for a moment before an idea seemed to cross his mind as he reached into the pocket inside his suit jacket. I looked on curiously as he pulled out a small wooden black box with a pretty design on top of it that looked like two moons surrounded by small little stars. He opened the box revealing the top of a purple card that had the same design on it only painted in gold that shimmered a little as the light from the window in the room hit it. I watched as he took the whole deck out of the box and began to shuffle them. Eventually, he had shuffled them so fast that three cards came flying out. He flipped each one over placing them in front of me, they each had designs on them of different creatures, but I couldn’t make sense of it. “Hmm interesting.” He pondered, I looked at him with wonder in my eyes and he gave a soft smile at my expression. “Says here that you will soon make a faithful connection with someone new.”
“What? When?! How do you know this!?” I shouted off my questions and Zaatar held up his hand stopping me from rapid firing anymore, he motioned towards the cards on the ground.
“The truth is in the cards, but also with her.” He said before reaching into his pocket again taking out a coin with portrait of a lady with long hair engraved into it. He took my small hand facing my palm up before placing the coin in it, I felt some strange energy pass through my palm sending shivers down my skin as I held the coin delicately. “This is the Avandra also known as the change-bringer, she is the goddess of fate. It was her who made those cards fly from my deck as I had silently asked her to give you a fortune reading.” I heard a small woe escape my lips as I handed the coin back to him, he took it putting back into his suit jacket before picking up the cards off the floor putting them back in the deck and in the wooden box before also returning it to its rightful place within his suit jacket.
“Does she know when I’ll meet this person?” I asked.
“She does, but shes not one to easily give out that information. Her job is to guide you along the fate destined for you, but she doesn’t tell you when or how you get there that is for you to decide.” He said as he stood up trying to smooth out the wrinkles in his pants with his hands. “I do know that you can’t have a faithful encounter if you just stay hidden in your father’s office all day.” This filled me with intense curiosity, could my faithful connection really be at this party? Probably not, but now I was excited to go, however I didn’t just want to give up the fight easily as I wanted to see if I could make a deal before agreeing to go.
“If I go and I do happen to meet my faithful connection, will you teach me how to do that thing with the cards?” I asked, he looked at me with disbelief before he burst out into laughter.
“You have been spending too much time around your father as his tendencies are rubbing off on you.” He took the box of cards back out of his pocket handing it to me “you keep these and when we have time, I’ll teach you how to use them, on the condition you agree to be on your best behavior today?” he said, I smiled wide nodding my head firmly as I took the box from him. “Good, now let’s go find your maids before they turn the whole estate upside down searching for you.” He reached out his large hand towards me which I reached out towards placing my small hand in his palm. His hand engulfed mine completely, but his grip was very gentle as he started to walk out of the room with me skipping in step with him.
