seeing cabaret the other day stoked my sally muse, who woulda thunk it!

sally dressing and acting and (most of the time) looking like she’s older and more confident than she is versus the few occasions where the façade slips and u realise she’s just this scrawny 20 year old who is wholly unsure of herself

#or when u look a little too long at her and realise that underneath the caked on makeup is a baby face #that her hands r constantly grubby and dirty like a child’s #not to negate sally’s life experiences bc she’s got them but she also .. hasn’t

she must look a proper sight to all those passing by, with a canary yellow beret stuck jauntily over locks of straw-coloured hair, silk stockings that are too big for her scrawny legs, and a shabby fur coat that more closely resembles the skin of a mangy dog than anything else. yet she sits, languidly, on the park bench, not giving a toss as to what may be said about her, here or anywhere else. ‘‘ really, mister blanc, i’d love to be able to help you, but i simply don’t know anything about this ghastly business! it’s hardly my fault the swine keeled over after visiting the club. ’’

it’s a rare instance for sally to appear through the doorway into the living room without her arm linked through gino’s or millie’s. it’s even rarer for her to pass by the frenchman in the kitchen without baring her teeth at him, a never-ending spat that she vaguely recalls started over a carton of eggs and a bottle of brandy that she may have pilfered. indeed, miss bowles is one of the apartment’s more polarising figures, and so a mellow start to the day –– such as this one –– is never sure to last long. ‘‘ red! oh red! what has a girl got to do to regain control of the television from our darling little sea captain? ’’

i said it on my old blog but ppl who portray sally as being ditzy blonde are so DUMB imo because a ditzy blonde would be homeless, a ditzy blonde would never have made it out of england, a ditzy blonde wld quite frankly be dead by now — sally is simply good at manipulating and using ppl and making them think she’s a ditzy blonde so that she gets away with more stuff

#and i say all of this lovingly! in a good-for-her mindset #the human form of ‘she may be down but she’s never out’

sally as a deconstruction and/or subversion of the manic pixie dream girl, let’s discuss

#her quirkiness is endearing at first until it grows old #until it becomes too much to handle #her bizarreness is an integral part of who she is - it isn’t smth she just turns on to be fun at parties or to attract guys #her instability makes her FUN and EXCITING but it also makes for an incredibly lonely and difficult life

no but one of my favourite things about sally as a character is that, how she’s portrayed is entirely dependent on the direction that the actress takes her in? and i know that sounds to be an obvious statement, but when u compare liza’s rendition of the title song to natasha’s rendition (aka my fave to exist ever) there is SUCH a stark difference

#i could wax lyrical about how liza; iconic as she is!; ruined the character of sally #by being TOO good. TOO talented #i respect her so very much and her sally is always going to be important to me #w liza u get the sense in that final number that sally is still kicking; she’s reaching out and grabbing onto the life she wants and #can still see for herself. she’s down but she’s most certainly not out #whereas natasha’s …. oh holy shit it HURTS me!!! her sally is at the end of her tether she looks literally like a bony child who is #too tired to go on but who has to go on #idk idk i have far too many opinions abt the different actresses n their portrayals of sally …
