Random Reflection
I went to video tape at the museum yesterday — it was the most awkward experience... I did not anticipate this, which is dumb because of course it would be awkward... I first had issues with the tripod — apparently you need special permission to bring in a tripod so I left it behind and went in with just the video camera.
I felt like the biggest creep just videotaping innocent museum goers. It was even worse because it’s so obvious that I’m videotaping because I wasn’t videotaping myself walking through the museum or the artwork but rather just standing there trying to be as still as possible like a tripod. I wanted to apologize and be like, “I go to art school” or something as if that excuses any odd behavior.
I also had to capture the museum guards — I asked them if I could video tape them. The first person was a woman and she said no, she wasn’t comfortable. I felt uncomfortable asking to videotape people. The next person was a man. He said hmm that’s hard. Ask that guy over there (probably the security manager?) and the manager was all !!!! no. He said first, I needed permission to videotape in the museum at all. Next, videotaping the guards was a security hazard. He then said this explanation to me in 5 different ways.
The process of making this project/videotaping was very uncomfortable and I felt like it spoke to my project in a different way. — the act of surveilling, the act of being not only the viewer but also the recorder, heightens all of the feelings that I felt as a viewer — self conscious of myself and hyper aware of those around me. What are they thinking? Will they confront me? I know that they are uncomfortable and so am I.
The camera has some sort of authority. People fear the camera. This would be interesting to explore sometime...
Design Brief
Who is the audience for this project?
Art museum enthusiasts
Art museum skeptics
Gallery goers
What kind of experience do you want this audience to have?
What kind of emotional experience?
Confusion
Self conscious
Surprise
Discomfort
Will they learn anything — if so, what?
The “museum experience” is not limited to or defined by the objects in a museum. You as a museum goer are part of the experience.
Awareness of changes in behavior in different spaces
Awareness of expectations in different spaces
Awareness of the influence of a space as it is defined or curated
What kind of tactile experience, if any?
Surprise in spacial environment — from physical space to virtual space
Initially expecting a high-end gallery experience to being surprised by the subversion.
The viewer is viewing him or herself.
The viewer becomes the viewed.
What questions do you want to provoke in an audience?
What makes a gallery space or museum?
Can the experience of a museum space be translated into a virtual space? How does the focus change based on this spacial change?
What is my role in the space? How do I influence the experience of the space?
What are the materials for this project?
html/css — website
Paper + ink — VIP invitations
How will it be presented?
The invitations would be sent out first directing the viewer to the URL
What is an ideal place / location to install this project?
In the GD Commons — projected onto the wall with the computer being the main object. Invitations next to it.

Always explore new technology
SURPRISE
invite the influence of proximity
absorb everything around you
incorporate everything into your work
let everything be inspiration for something new
don’t worry so much about preservation
preservation in balance with creation
invite disruptive change
how far can you take an idea?
don’t just be happy with what you’ve made, take it further
fall in love with possibility
make room for discovery and practice and exploration
Track your own process
figure out what works best for you?
Make the work you wish you were making
Don’t think about what the final product should look like
Separate process and portfolio
process: should look like shit, you’re working very closely with your work. just experiment
portfolio: act as an art director. Use what you learned in your explorations to add meaning to it and create a “portfolio piece”
Follow what your’e driven towards and things will come your way
work follows passion
Exercises to try:
Tracking your own process
stop and take photos every now and then
document
auto-photo taking camera?
1 day exercises:
you have 24 hours from ideation to production
make fast, intuitive work, don’t overthink
helps you to study how you work and make naturally/instinctively
Once a month:
explore a new technology and break it
expand tool set and skill set
Misused and abused workshop
break habits and expectations
material misuse
STEAL FROM OTHERS
Things to ponder:
What is important to you in design?
