Consumer Reports names most comfortable Cars
Consumer reports recently named 3 Mercedes-Benz automobile’s among its top 10 most Comfortable Cars. The automobiles in the Mercedes-Benz lineup that were mentioned as standouts in the prized list were the E350, GL350 & the S550. The automobiles were ranked in terms of ride comfort, cabin quietness & front-seat comfort.
Mercedes-Benz E-Class E350
The E350 received high marks for its consistency as a longtime staple of comfort. The E-class is known for its quiet cabin with great isolation from bumps keeping the ride smooth & steady from the city to the highway. In general, the E-Class puts comfort & function as a high priority. Front seats are large, well-shaped, and supportive all around.
Mercedes-Benz GL-Class GL350
The seven-passenger GL350 was listed as the most comfortable-riding SUV that consumer reports tested with its high quality materials & quiet cabin. The GL's well-padded front seats are wide and accommodating yet well contoured for good lateral support and the cushions are firm enough to be supportive without being too hard. The GL's optional power lumbar support also provides good lower-back support. Mercedes-Benz S-Class S550
Among competitors, the S-Class stood out with its remarkable absorption and a calm stately demeanor. Features such as the standard AirMatic suspension were noted for making normal bumps & ruts seemingly disappear. The overall ride comfort for the S-Class was reviewed as being truly extraordinary.
Mercedes-Benz Springtime Features
With Spring finally upon us here are some features that can help Mercedes-Benz owners make the most of the warm weather. Cargo Room
If you are planning a road trip for the spring Mercedes-Benz SUV offers plenty of cargo space. From the seven passenger GL to the nimble 2015 GLA coming this fall, every Mercedes-Benz cargo area is intelligently designed so you can get the most into-and out of it, too.
Air Balance
For anyone with pollen allergies, the S-Class can make spring that much more enjoyable. When equipped with the Air Balance Package, dual activated charcoal filters and an ionizer filter out airborne impurities and odors, while the cabin fragrance system gently atomizes four distinctive, subtle aromas into the cabin. Everyone can appreciate that, pollen allergies or not.
AIRSCARF Even though spring brings warmer weather, there can still be a bit of a chill in the air. Nevertheless, our innovative AIRSCARF feature in roadsters like the SL-Class will let you keep the top down a little longer by wrapping your neck and shoulders in a virtual scarf of warm air piped through the base of your headrest.
Magic Sky Control Available in the SL and SLK, MAGIC SKY CONTROL lets you soak up the springtime sunshine—even on cool mornings—by turning the glass on your roadster’s hardtop from nearly opaque to clear at the touch of a button.
Towing Boats For the sailors among you, we have a variety of vehicles rated to tow anything from a hobie cat on up to a 7000-lbs. powerboat. And with ample power to go with those tow ratings, any one of those vehicles can get you to your favorite body of unfrozen water at a rate of knots.
Cooling Cup Holders Whether you like to stay frosty or get things hot—by which we mean beverages—our heated and cooled cup holders do both. The secret is something called the Peltier effect: send an electrical current through a junction of two conductors and heat can be generated or removed at that junction. That’s pretty cool. Or, alternatively, hot. Have a look of it in action here:https://vine.co/v/MZi93ehFlM0
Ventilated Seats Spring does, of course, mean warmer weather, but we've got your back (literally) with Active Ventilated seats. By gently circulating air through perforations in the seat, three levels of cooling will keep your clothes drier on hot days—and the rest of you more comfortable overall.
4MATIC April showers bring… a reason to go hiking and camping because at least it’s not snowing anymore. Any one of our advanced 4MATIC all-wheel drive SUVs can help you venture off the beaten path, do a little exploring and watch spring unfold before your very eyes.
Mercedes gets Predictive
Imagine if your car could detect that a child is on board at 7:30 a.m. on a weekday, anticipating that you are traveling to take the child to school and then automatically post a traffic report for your route on the navigation screen. Mercedes-Benz aims to develop this technology with a project it calls the predictive user experience. This technology can be used to observe how drivers and passengers use a car and analyze the data to anticipate their wants, from mirror positioning to GPS destinations. These preferences could then be transferred from one Mercedes to another. Which means that if you've gotten comfortable in one particular model Mercedes-Benz and decide to update to a newer model you could carry your preferences with you to the new vehicle without having to take the time to set up the new vehicle or worry about getting comfortable.
The Mercedes-Benz S-Class was recently nominated as one of three finalists for the prestigious 2014 World Car of the Year title. The winner will be announced April 17th, during the 2014 New York Auto Show. For more info on the 2014 S-Class click here.

Mercedes-Benz Apple CarPlay Demo
Apple's CarPlay debuts with Mercedes-Benz
Apple has rebranded its iOS in the Car initiative as CarPlay, and unveiled Mercedes-Benz amongst other manufacturers as one of the first partners to build it into their vehicles.
Originally announced at Apple’s WWDC conference in 2013, iOS in the Car aimed to connect iPhones into in-car information and entertainment systems.
Apple’s Siri virtual assistant technology is key to the initiative, acting as the interface for drivers to access their contacts, make calls and listen to voicemails, while also reading out messages and responding to voice commands.
Apple’s Maps service will be a key feature in CarPlay too, with routes shown on the car’s own screen, and spoken turn-by-turn directions. Digital music is also part of CarPlay, but it is not an iTunes-only affair, with Spotify and US service iHeartRadio among the third-party apps that will work with it.
Apple stressed that it had safety in mind when designing CarPlay. “iPhone users always want their content at their fingertips and CarPlay lets drivers use their iPhone in the car with minimised distraction,” said vice president of iPhone and iOS product marketing Greg Joswiak.
Mercedes-Benz will be showing off their first CarPlay car later this week. For more info on CarPlay click here. or Click here for a special Video Demo
The Lifesaver
2500 patents stemmed from his career, these same patents have contributed to an indefinite number of lives saved.
Behind the colorful character of this exceptional inventor was an equally colorful life history. Béla was born on the 1st of March 1907 in Hirtenberg near Vienna. Béla was born into an era prior to the popularization of the automobile. As a result of affordability & availability horse-drawn carriages still dominated the streets as opposed to automobiles. Béla however, was born into one of the wealthiest families in Austria-Hungary- and so he was able to enjoy riding in a car from even an early age. One of the first family cars that he grew up loving was none other than the Austro-Daimler. When the First World War broke out, little Béla's fortunes changed. When he was only ten years old, his father was killed in action. Little by little, the war and the ensuing Great Depression swallowed up all the family's wealth. The financial disaster was so great that he even had to stop attending school for a time, because his widowed mother could no longer afford to pay his school fees.
However, Béla found ways and means to enroll as an engineering student at the Viennese Technical College of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering in 1924. The young student's feel for future trends was astonishing: one of his first design projects was the front end of an automobile whereby the end piece of the body was a horizontal piece, bordered by two horizontal body ends. The horizontal piece as a predominant stylistic element was to be called the "New Look" a few years later – and to be integrated into many automobiles.
Béla graduated in 1926 but even for such a gifted Designer consistent work proved hard to find. Up until the mid-1930s he had to survive on temporary posts as a draughtsman and from freelance work as the author of technical treatises. The fact that his ideas were often ahead of their time did not save him from being the victim of redundancy himself. It was not until almost a decade after graduating that he was offered his first steady job at the Gesellschaft für technischen Fortschritt (GETEFO, Society for Technical Progress) in Berlin and later for its French partner company, SOPROTEC, in Paris.
In the time when he worked for GETEFO/SOPROTEC alone, he registered over 150 patents. But his days at GETEFO were numbered: at the beginning of 1939 he was once more out of a job. Desolated, he searched for a new position. That was when he recalled his childhood dream: the Austro-Daimler. He applied to Mercedes-Benz. And was turned down. Feeling he had nothing to lose, he tried his luck again. This time he was given the opportunity to prove his abilities to chairman Wilhelm Haspel in a one-to-one interview. Béla Barényi presented himself as the passionate perfectionist he was. He did not mince words, telling Haspel directly everything that was being done wrong in the design department. Haspel recognized the young man's enormous potential: "Mr Barényi, you are fifteen to twenty years ahead of your time.
You will be put under a glass cover in Sindelfingen. Everything you discover will go straight to the patent department." Béla never had to write a job application again. The thing that Mercedes-Benz and the designer had in common was their passion for safety. That was back in the days when car manufacturers carefully avoided using the term: particularly in the post-war period, nobody wanted to be reminded about the dangers of driving.
His biggest breakthrough came in 1951 when he registered patent DBP 854.157 – commonly known as the "crumple zone". Béla was the first to recognize – years before, in fact – that kinetic energy should be dispersed by deformation so as not to harm the occupants of the vehicle. The first Mercedes-Benz vehicle with bodywork developed according to this patent was the 1959 W111 series.
All in all, this discovery was to revolutionize the entire automotive industry. Béla Barényi was an inventor through and through. The expression "time to go home" only meant one thing for him: that he had to change locations to carry on experimenting. Numerous patents and designs, from the Ponton body to the Pagoda roof, from the "disappearing windscreen wiper" to the deformable steering column, can all be attributed to him.
In having a designer of this caliber, Mercedes-Benz was able to achieve a leading position in the field of vehicle safety to such an extent that in 1968 even the Vice President of the Ford Motor Company was forced to acknowledge:
"Quite honestly, I must admit that today we are still not in a position to fix the actual safety level of occupants when we change our models. We won't be able to compete with Daimler-Benz until after 1970."
In the 1990s, when the subject of safety became a central theme in advertising, there could be only one possible protagonist for Mercedes-Benz commercials: Béla Barényi.
And during his lifetime, in 1994, he was received into the "Automotive Hall of Fame" in Detroit and welcomed Into the circle of outstanding inventors and innovators. He died in Böblingen near Stuttgart in 1997. Today people are honored in his name for outstanding achievements in the field of traffic and automotive transport: the Béla Barényi Prize has been awarded in Vienna since 2005.
