Companies House DVD.

This project took so long to complete that it had to have some scenes completely reshot as the Head of CH changed, the processes changed and the website changed. It took so long that DVDs had almost completely gone out of fashion, certainly the faux-Office documentary had. Still though.

Spring clean nostalgia

On clearing out the loft I found my old portfolio case from the days long before CD-ROMs and the internet. (Mid 90s) I do miss the tangible and pain staking aspect of those days. But what struck me, especially as I’ve never been particularly adept at blowing my own horn or that convinced of my own design skills was how contemporary and fresh a lot of it still looked, - content aside - many of the items could’ve stood alongside something from 2016 without looking dated. I’m not sure if that makes me a visionary or just that design hasn’t really moved on that much. 🤔

Not all of it has fared so well though. :-)

One thing that struck me was, I do miss print. Having studied printing science I will always love how exact it is, Quite how I went from that to the vagaries of “this doesn’t work in IE8″ is beyond me. 🙃

I have been doing a spring clean of the loft and found a box of old discs and this. Remember the clamour for CD-Rom business cards in the early 2000s!?Macromedia Director or Flash based presentations that auto ran when you put it on your tray CD player. Was a security nightmare, what were we thinking :-)

Black and white pitch banner, which has been designed using the capabilities of Adobe Animate CC to be coloured and ready to publish in a matter of minutes once approved. I really handy way to be able to share non-watermarked artwork imo.

“Experienced”

Although it wasn’t a big surprise if I think about it, I was still quite amazed at the number of rich media banners I’d built in Sizmek alone in the last five years.

1454 - at last count!! That’s more than one rich media banner per working day in Sizmek alone (not all of them are that rich). Then there’s the other 3rd party vendors like DoubleClick and Celtra, not to mention the thousands of non-rich animated banners that would have gone directly via DCM for example, which should add up to a whole lot of experience, and yet thanks to the ever changing  landscape of digital, I still often feel like a newbie. It was never like this in print. :-)

Tiffany & Co. Holiday Banners

Using Flash CC to create a Doubleclick Studio expandable banner. Also creating a sub 100kb animation of the neon light flashing in HTML5 was quite an achievement.

This campaign was a good case study in there often being too many cooks in the digital creative process. The design agency came up with three concepts, then got someone to build a banner and then wanted them adapted for publishing and across the world. This process could/should have involved one or two points at most for efficiency.  Instead it involved four costly stages, as each one had to “rebuild” the banners to their environment before proceeding. If the agency not wanting to get involved in the delivery process had rather just supplied a storyboard to whoever was building the banners for “press” they would have saved a lot of time and money.
