This sounds dope.
Huh. Crazy how this looks EXACTLY-THE-FREAKING-SAME as the show in New York. Anyone who says this wasn’t a sell out is out of their minds.
First off, thanks for posting the official trailer. We hadn’t watched it yet and really enjoyed it.
Anyway, that is a very short sighted opinion. As has been pointed out several times in the past, New York is not the first staging (nor the second tbh) so the McKittrick is just as much a sellout by your standards.
Let’s be real. The order is London, Boston, New York, Shanghai. This is the 3rd continent and the 4th restaging. Each show built on the last, including this most recent staging. From what I understand, there are new set elements, props, and even two new characters.
It’s perfectly fine if you prefer the New York show and it’s perfectly fine if that is your one true show, but that is not universal. That’s about you. Truthfully, if any version of the show “sold out” first, it was the NY show with the expansive money-making ventures of Emursive. That was the first step down the path of commercializing and mainstreaming this particular show.
Punchdrunk is constantly trying to improve upon their content and it sounds like they were (mostly) successful with the Shanghai production. At the end of the day, more quality art in the world, more accessible to more people is a good thing. There is no need to belittle the fans and actors of Shanghai or the Punchdrunk creative team.
I respectfully disagree. New York is vastly larger than both of it predecessors. All of the Rebecca material was added here, so there was quite a bit of creative development in NYC. But it is still running. Close the show if you want to elaborate on it. That would be a slightly different situation. Right now it feels like they are piggybacking over ground they’ve already tread three times. How many times can you do the same thing? It’s a tad ridiculous, and frankly, diminishes the artistic merit of the company. No film director would remake a property four times. I don’t think many theatre directors would either. At a certain point you need to ask, what is the point? Aside from dollar signs.
That said, I’m glad you enjoyed the trailer. I just don’t understand why it exists in the first place.
In Shanghai, Punchdrunk has redesigned the entire set to reflect 1930’s Shanghai. They have added several new characters with complete, intertwining storylines, and built upon existing characters (Fulton for one) to give more elaborate backstory. Not sure what your definition of creative development is?
There have been countless productions of Macbeth over the years by many production companies and movie studios. That is the beauty of art. It can be reimagined and interpreted. The only reason the New York production was vastly larger is because of the commercialization of the productions and addition of production companies like Emursive. Musical theater often runs New York productions and touring casts at the same time. There are lots of broadway productions that run congruently in New York and London or Toronto. Accessibility to quality art is a good thing.
Also, you must not be familiar with the Boston production because the Rebecca storyline came from Boston and if anything was muddled and watered down (due to copy-write issues) in the New York show. The Rebecca storyline was much stronger in the Boston production.
Just say that you don’t like Punchdrunk reaching out and running the same story on two continents at the same time if that’s the issue. If you think this is a carbon copy of the New York show with nothing new to add to artistically, you are wrong. The Trailer for Sleep No More Shanghai exists because Sleep No More Shanghai exists.
To add to what @rottenwoodandwiltedsunflowers said about the Boston production, that’s where the characters explicitly were called “the second Mrs.DeWinters” “Mrs.Danvers” and even Duncan referred to as Maxim in the original program. It wasn’t till the NYC production that the Paisley witches elements came in more to tone the Rebecca elements down and they became more known as Agnes Naismith, and Catherine Campbell. As someone who has seen the Shanghai show, only a few of the loops have truly remained unchanged. They are honestly different shows. They involve similar characters, and similar choreography, and diverge from there. The fourth and fifth floors, are nothing like the fourth and fifth floors in NYC. You will lose characters that you think you know so well, and if you expect someone to act a certain way, you would be surprised because they may not be the same person in Shanghai that they are in NYC. Once again, Punchdrunk has taken the opportunity to work on their material, and change what they have done. Honestly, the two new characters were some of the best loops that I’ve had. The new female character involves some of the most beautiful, and athletically impressive choreography, and an actual character arc that is charming, and heartbreaking to watch, and is particularly relevant in a Chinese setting. Some of the changes, I honestly thought were disappointing because I do love the NY show so much, but some choices were absolutely wonderful and added so much for me (the Teddy Bear for instance–for those who have seen it). So I don’t know where this anger, and superiority keeps coming from if you’re just factually incorrect about a lot of things. I personally just want Punchdrunk to have the opportunity to keep trying things, and experimenting, and one day, use the money they are getting to make a new show!
So it's not the same. It's a remake. While another remake is going on. Which is a remake of a second remake. Which is ridiculous. Glad y'all like it, but my viewpoint stands. This is silly. Make something new if you want to make something new. Outside of doing that, you're just treading the same ground with slight variation.

Silly you. They didn’t include any of the Shanghai exclusive juice in the video. Wait until when you actually visited McKinnon and then make accusations. Many seasoned NY show fans all found the Shanghai show so drastically DIFFERENT. But we all know, haters gonna hate.
More importantly, I MISS THE SHANGHAI ORIGINAL CAST SOOOOOO MUCH!!!
Hard pass. And if that is true, then their promotional department needs a helluva lot of work.

Why, yes. 4am seems like a perfect time to rewatch Antichrist.
Occasionally, I write things. On VERY rare occasions, I share the words I write. This one I want to share. Goodnight.

I've been re-listening to Dark Side of the Moon today for the first time in a long time. What Pink Floyd did with this album is so far beyond my comprehension. It feels special, revolutionary; a pure masterpiece. There's a profound darkness running fluidly through this album that strikes hard and fast, making the listener reflect on themselves, and the themes within the music. True art. And truly exceptional stuff.

“I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him.” - Revelation, 6:8 For some strange reason, I have always had a keen interest in odd and frightening imagery. What scares us says a lot about who we are and what we believe. I did not set out to create a moody/scary photo tonight. But as I finished editing this image, I found myself staring at the screen, genuinely unsettled. So I suppose, for me at least, that is exactly what I have done.
